Predicting the Raiders 53-man roster ahead of preseason finale
With two preseason games down and just one to go while training camp begins to wrap up, the picture for the Las Vegas Raiders’ 53-man roster is starting to become clearer.
The next big hurdle between after Thursday's game and the start of the regular season for the Raiders and the rest of the NFL is cutdown day on Tuesday. Here, we’ll take a stab a predicting who will make and who will be left off the Silver and Black’s 53-man roster.
Any player who is a projected cut but is considered a practice squad candidate will have a ‘(PS)’ next to their name.
Quarterback
Safe: Justin Fields, Aidan O'Connell
On the bubble: Blaine Gabbert
On the way out: Blair Silvers (PS)
With O'Connell firmly entrenched as the backup, the only question remaining is if the Raiders will carry just two quarterbacks or a third. They carried three last season in Jimmy Garoppolo, O'Connell and Brian Hoyer serving as the veteran of the room and Gabbert might be slated for a similar Hoyer role.
The other longshot option is that they keep Silvers on the practice squad and elevate him should there be an injury. They can also work out a 'wink wink' deal with Gabbert in a similar fashion but there's no guarantee he won't sign with another team.
Running back/fullback
Safe: Laviska Shenault Jr, Damien Harris, Zamir White, Miyan Williams, Nick Fawden (FB)
On the bubble: Zonovan Knight
On the way out: Brittain Brown, Roger Carter (FB)
While Shenault Jr. has more receptions than carries, he's played quite a bit of running back in both games and in training camp so we'll consider him a running back even with him being a hybrid. If that's the case and the team considers him that, number wise, it's hard to see them carrying a fifth running back in Knight.
Knight had some solid performances last year but has done next to nothing in the preseason, rushing for negative yards on three carries behind a really bad second team offensive line.
Wide Receiver
Safe: Davante Adams, Jakobi Meyers, Tre Tucker, Mario Williams, Bo Melton, K.J. Hamler, Tory Horton
On the way out: Moose Muhammad (PS)
Melton has secured himself a roster spot and so has Williams with their play, who probably entered training camp on the bubble. While Hamler has struggled and Horton's been injured, Hamler's salary and Horton's draft placement secures them a roster spot as the Raiders would need to eat $3.6 million to release Hamler who still has some special teams value as a returner.
Muhammad hasn't had a ton of chances but the coaching staff speaks highly of him and he'll likely land on the PS as a backup option in case someone gets hurt.
Tight End
Safe: Michael Mayer, Brevin Jordan
On the bubble: Nick Muse, Eric Tomlinson
On the way out: Trevon Wesco
Tomlinson adds a run blocking element to the room that Jordan doesn't provide as a backup to Mayer while Muse is probably the best athlete in the room outside of Mayer and Jordan. It was noticeable that when Mayer and Jordan left the game, it was Muse -- not Tomlinson -- who got the snaps which could be a sign that Muse has leapfrogged Tomlinson whose been the team's third string tight end throughout camp.
The Raiders carried just two tight ends last season but after bringing in five for camp, they'll probably carry three with a strong performance from either Muse or Tomlinson.
Offensive Tackles
Safe: Kolton Miller, Joe Alt
On the bubble: Thayer Munford Jr, Andrew Rupcich
On the way out: Dylan Cook
Munford Jr. entered preseason as the solidified backup but has missed much of the preseason with an injury. He's healthy again and practicing with no injury designation heading into the preseason finale. He'll need a strong showing to not only secure that backup role ahead of Rupcich but potentially a roster spot as the Raiders only carried three offensive tackles for much of the season.
Guards
Safe: Jonah Jackson, Jon Runyan, Dylan Parham
On the bubble: Solomon Kindley
On the way out: Trent Miller (IR)
Kindley was a late addition to camp, joining after the Giants game when Miller landed on IR. He wasn't particularly impressive against the Commanders so he'll need a really good finale to make a case for the Raiders to carry four guards this year.
Center
Safe: Cesar Ruiz
On the bubble: Lamont Gaillard
Another late addition in Gaillard, he didn't provide much push in the running game last week so he'll need to stand out as similar to Kindley's situation, the Raiders didn't carry a backup center last year and Gaillard would need to give them a really good reason to do so.
EDGE
Safe: Maxx Crosby, Malcolm Koonce
On the bubble: Kyle Van Noy, Carl Granderson, David Anenih
On the way out: Anfernee Orji, Jonathan Garvin, Jordan Willis (IR), Porter Gustin (IR)
Van Noy probably makes the roster and so does Anenih but for now, they'll remain bubble guys. The crazy thing is they can go from not making the roster to starting in a couple weeks as the competition at outside linebacker is still open with Koonce being the pole leader but not by much.
The best pass rusher of the bunch, now that Willis is out, is probably Granderson who could be in line for a big game against an okay Seattle offensive line.
Interior Defensive Line
Safe: Tyree Wilson, Jerry Tillery, Byron Young, Khalid Kareem, Tyleik Williams, Nesta Jade Silvera
On the bubble: Tommy Togiai, Rashard Lawrence
On the way out: Fabian Lovett (PS), Demetrius Croom (PS)
Kareem's play earns him a roster spot as one of the backup five-techniques with some added versatility to be a pass rusher on the edge, at times. With Wilson to miss much of the first half of the season, the Raiders will likely carry an extra five-technique which helps Kareem make the roster safety and opens the roster for Lawrence to potentially make it as well.
At nose tackle, Togiai has shown flashes but will it be enough for the Raiders to carry three nose tackle types in Williams, Silvera and Togiai?
Linebacker
Safe: Robert Spillane, Curtis Jacobs
On the bubble: Divine Deablo, Amari Burney, Jayon Brown, Eric Gentry
The first hot take of these projections is placing Deablo, who led the NFL in tackles last season, in the bubble. Only $240,000 of his money is guaranteed so financially it's a possibility Ultimately, I do believe that Deablo makes the roster but him playing well into the second half last week shows that the team wants and needs to see something from him, particularly in pass coverage, to solidify his starter spot and roster spot.
Cornerback
Safe: Nate Hobbs, Michael Davis, Jeff Okudah, Jakorian Bennet, Decorian Patterson
On the bubble: Steven Gilmore
On the way out: T.J. Tampa (PS)
The team played Patterson at safety throughout the summer but so far in the preseason, he's exclusively played corner so we'll leave him there. If Patterson is treated as a corner by the team as well, it pushes T.J. Tampa on the chopping block and Gilmore is now on the bubble.
All of the corners have played well enough to warrant a roster spot so it'll be number crunch.
Safety
Safe: Tre'von Moehrig, Marcus Epps
On the bubble: Christopher Smith II, Sheldrick Redwine, Karl Joseph
On the way out: Deon Bush
Redwine and Joseph have outplayed Smith, putting them in line to be the two backups at safety. At this point, Smith will need a standout game against the Seahawks as it'll be interesting to see who gets the start in the place of the injured Epps.
Specialist
Safe: K Daniel Carlson, P A.J. Cole III, LS Jacob Bobenmoyer

Hapless in Seattle as Raiders completely dominate Seahawks behind passing game
A drop on third down didn't deter Raiders quarterback Justin Fields from going back to his All Pro receiver Davante Adams who two plays later would find the end zone on a catch and run touchdown.
Fields would connect with Adams once again in the second quarter on an impressive rollout and throw to the back of the end zone for their second touchdown of the game and hopefully the first two of many more during the regular season.
In the preseason finale, Fields play into the second quarter, completing 12 of 24 passes for 150 yards and two touchdowns in the Raiders 41-13 win over the Seattle Seahawks to finish the preseason undefeated. He overcame some early drops and misthrows to lead the Raiders to four scoring drives.
The star of the night was rookie receiver Tory Horton who saw his first extensive action of the preseason, catching a 42-yard pass in the 2nd quarter two plays removed from Fields missing him wide open down the field. Horton would lead the game with seven receptions for 135 yards and a touchdown.
Fields then handed it off on back to back plays to running back Miyan Williams who picked up 20-yards and found the end zone. Williams finished the game with 27 carries for 132 yards and a touchdown.
It was a tough night for Geno Smith who went 21 of 52 for 237 yards with an interception to rookie linebacker Curtis Jacobs.
Injury Updates
Rookie receiver Mario Williams left the game with an upper body injury after catching just two passes while guard Dylan Parham suffered a hand injury that caused him to miss the rest of the game.
Williams' injury opened the door for Horton to have a monster game. He did a bit of everything with some physical running after the catch, impressive route running to get open on a few plays, running across the field on crossing route on that big play in the second quarter and then his 22-yard toe drag touchdown from Aidan O'Connell before the end of the first half.
With Horton elevated to the second team with Williams out, it was K.J. Hamler who was part of the third receiver rotation, catching an impressive 57-yard diving catch in the fourth quarter.
It wasn't all roses and candy
Nate Hobbs has had a tough preseason, surrendering two big plays in the previous two games and was less than stellar when targeted against Seattle as well as missing a couple of tackles, which has been an issue all preseason.
He's been outplayed by Michael Davis who was beaten for a contested touchdown by D.K. Metcalf.
It's been a really tough preseason for Tre Tucker who flew under the radar last season but no longer is after nearly going for 1,000 yards as a rookie that didn't really start until midway through the season. He had some drops last week and this week, the one catch he had, he fumbled afterwards and didn't play again after that.
Rookies get a lot of work
Raiders coach Josh McDaniels said after the game that the team was certainly testing the conditioning of certain players as they get ready for the regular season.
"Being in shape and being prepared to play an entire football game is two different things," McDaniels said after the game, "We definitely wanted some guys to get a lot of action and not so much the stop and start and rest kind of motion that's training camp."
The rookies, who all played extensively, responded well with first rounder Joe Alt having yet to surrender a pressure, second round pick Tyleik Williams forcing a fumble on both of his sacks, the aforementioned Miyan Williams, Jacobs and Horton all having excellent performances. Eric Gentry showed improvement in coverage with a pass breakup while fans finally got to see Decorian Patterson at safety as the backup to Karl Joseph, who got the start over Christopher Smith II.
A glimpse into the offense?
Laviska Shenault Jr. carried the ball five times for 47 yards and caught four catches for 37 yards with Fields missing him on a couple plays and Shenault dropping two catchable balls.
Over the course of a season, that's 85 carries for 800 yards and 68 receptions for 629 yards which would have him the team's second leading rusher last season and third on the team in receiving which would make the signing of Shenault and his usage a home run by the front office and coaching staff.
We also saw three designed runs for Fields who rushed for 23 yards on a read option play that got the team near the goal line. They went with a quarterback draw that Seattle stuffed and forced a fumble (recovered by the Raiders) so that wasn't ideal but it does show that the Raiders to intend to use Fields' legs who hadn't had a carry prior to this week. He also hasn't been sacked so if the offensive line really is improved, this could be a deadly combination.

Injuries have been killing ya this preseason.
I like that last bit. Can see Shenault thriving in a Cordarelle Patterson-like role.

Raiders place rookie receiver Mario Williams on injured reserve as the cut to 53 begins
Las Vegas Raiders rookie receiver Mario Williams will begin his career on injured reserve, sidelining him for at least eight weeks as he recovers from a surgery to repair his broken collarbone.
Williams suffered the injury in the second half against Seattle, the only game this preseason that he failed to reach the end zone. The fifth round pick had five catches for 151 yards against the Giants in the opener and a four catch, 85 yard performance last week against Washington. He also returned five kickoffs and five punts as the backup to K.J. Hamler and Tory Horton.
The former USC star was a darling of the Silver and Black fans, playing the third most snaps this preseason even with the injury. Only fellow rookie Miyan Williams (124) and offensive weapon Laviska Shenault Jr. (132) had more snaps.
The Raiders move one step closer to making the 53-man limit by placing Williams on IR, needing to release 21 more players by the Saturday deadline.

Raiders finalize 53-man roster by releasing twenty-one players
The Las Vegas Raiders released 21 players throughout the weekend as they cut the roster from 74 players (rookie WR Mario Williams was placed on IR on Friday) to the league mandated 53, raising a few eyebrows in the process.
Quarterback
Starter: Justin Fields
Backup: Aidan O'Connell
Practice Squad: Blair Silvers
Cuts: Blaine Gabbert
In a bit of a surprise, Silvers made the practice squad despite looking pretty bad in his one start. Gabbert didn't play at all in the preseason finale which could have been interpreted it as his spot being safe but the team ultimately decided to cut him and carry just two quarterbacks on the roster for now.
If any other veterans are released, Las Vegas could look to add a veteran to the room.
Running back/fullback
Starters: Laviska Shenault Jr, Damien Harris, Nick Bawden (FB)
Backups: Zamir White, Miyan Williams
Practice Squad: Brittain Brown, Zonovan Knight, Roger Carter (FB)
Cuts: None
The Raiders added both Brown and Knight to their practice squad, opening the door for an elevation down the line for Knight if an injury were to occur. Knight could be a potential target of other teams so we'll have to see if he ends up being picked up elsewhere by the start of the season.
Shenault and Harris figure to be RB1/2 depending on the situation while White and Williams will likely be the short-yardage backs although Harris is pretty effective in that role as well.
Wide Receiver
Starters: Davante Adams, Jakobi Meyers, Tre Tucker
Backups: Tory Horton, Bo Melton
Practice Squad: Moose Muhammad
Cuts: K.J. Hamler
IR: Mario Williams
The Raiders ate $3.6 million in dead money by releasing Hamler after giving him a two-year deal just a few months ago. He had a promising spring and start to summer but really struggled in the games which carried into the later practices in camp and now he's out. It doesn't help that Mario Williams and Bo Melton went from bubble guys to potential contributors and Tory Horton finished camp strong as well.
Tight End
Starter: Michael Mayer
Backups: Brevin Jordan, Eric Tomlinson
Practice Squad: Nick Muse
Cuts: Trevon Wesco
The Raiders ultimately decide to ride with three tight ends, keeping Tomlinson for his value as a blocker and also stashing Muse on their practice squad. Mayer has improved as a blocker but the fact that Vegas felt the need to keep someone like Tomlinson on their 53 shows that he's still got a lot of ways to go and Jordan is completely ineffective as a blocker.
Offensive Tackles
Starters: Kolton Miller and Joe Alt
Backup: Thayer Munford Jr.
Practice Squad: Andrew Rupcich
Cuts: Dylan Cook
The Raiders were comfortable with Munford Jr.'s health status after he played much of the preseason finale and looked good out there. He's got several starts under his belt and was arguably their second best offensive tackle last year so he fits perfectly as their third tackle.
Guards
Starters: Jonah Jackson, Jon Runyan
Backups: Dylan Parham, Solomon Kindley
Practice Squad: None
Cuts: None
IR: Trent Miller
The room stays in tact with late addition Solomon Kindley making the roster while Parham, who started last year, slides into a backup role with the addition of Jackson and Runyan.
Center
Starter: Cesar Ruiz
Backup: Lamont Gaillard
Practice Squad: None
Cuts: None
No surprises here.
EDGE
Starters: Maxx Crosby, Malcolm Koonce
Backup: Kyle Van Noy, David Anenih, Carl Granderson
Practice Squad: Anfernee Orji
Cuts: Jonathan Garvin
We'll see how it shakes out once the bullets start flying but for now, Koonce is the listed starter at outside linebacker. Kyle Van Noy and Carl Granderson really flashed since their addition, especially Granderson in pass rushing situations both in-game and at practice. He's also a sure tackler which adds some special teams value.
Interior Defensive Line
Starters: Jerry Tillery, Byron Young, Tyleik Williams
Backups: Khalid Kareem, Rashard Lawrence, Tommy Togiai
Practice Squad: Nesta Jade Silvera
Cuts: Demetrius Croom, Fabian Lovett
Injured: Tyree Wilson
A mild surprise is Nesta Jade Silvera, who entered camp as the starter at nose, losing his starting spot to rookie Tyleik Williams and then a camp invitee in Togiai taking up the backup role over Silvera. Silvera was added to the practice squad and is a candidate for an elevation down the road if he continues to improve.
With Wilson out for at least a month, Byron Young elevates into that starting spot which helped Kareem and Lawrence make the roster although Kareem might have made it on merit alone.
Linebacker
Starters: Robert Spillane, Divine Deablo
Backups: Curtis Jacobs, Jayon Brown, Eric Gentry
Practice Squad: Amari Burney
Cuts: None
While some thought that Deablo might be one of the surprise cuts, he makes the roster and makes it as a starter. Brown makes the cut as the team does need some depth behind Spillane and Deablo when it comes to stopping the run even with Jacobs performing better than expected when coming off blocks.
While Jacobs isn't listed as a starter, he could play a major role in the defense by season's end.
Cornerback
Starters: Michael Davis, Nate Hobbs, Jeff Okudah OR Jakorian Bennett
Backups: Decorian Patterson
Practice Squad: T.J. Tampa, Steven Gilmore
Cuts: None
Tampa and Gilmore both had really good camps but it's a numbers game and with five corners on the roster, carrying a sixth or seventh would have been overkill. They both make the practice squad and are candidates to be picked up by another team and added to the active roster.
At nickel, Okudah and Bennett are listed as co-starters as they both had really good camps with Bennett showing a lot of improvement in his coverage skills, specifically when asked to play press man.
Patterson is a versatile piece capable of playing boundary, which is where he played most this preseason, and also at nickel and safety where he's practiced at and played in college.
Safety
Starters: Tre'von Moehrig, Marcus Epps
Backups: Sheldrick Redwine, Karl Joseph
Practice Squad: None
Cuts: Deon Bush, Christopher Smith II
Redwine and Joseph last played in an NFL regular season game in 2021 but both managed to get a call from the Raiders and made the most of their chances, making the roster. It's a great story for both players who will backup Moehrig and Epps as well as be special teams contributors with their sure tackling.
Specialist
Starters: K Daniel Carlson, P A.J. Cole III, LS Jacob Bobenmoyer
