After hot start under rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders, Saints defensive woes have them reeling
The New Orleans Saints seemed to have found themselves a franchise quarterback and potential Rookie of the Year candidate in Shedeur Sanders with Deion Sanders' son leading the team to a 5-1 start to the season and right in the thick of it for the top seed in the NFC in the first quarter of the season.

Since then, the Saints have lost six straight with their last loss coming against the Washington Commanders and rookie quarterback Caleb Williams who threw for 271 yards and two touchdowns in the 33-28 win over the Saints.

The opposing team has scored at least 24 points in five of the Saints' six straight losses with Carolina, Philadelphia, Tampa Bay and now Washington all scoring over 28 points. The Saints rank bottom twelve in pass defense, bottom ten in points allowed and dead last in sacks with just eight on the season with not much production on the defensive line outside of veteran Cameron Jordan.

Bye Week Report: The State of the Raiders
Las Vegas heads into the bye week with a 4-8 record, bottom of the AFC West with the league's worst defense and having recently guaranteed a quarterback $68 million just 47 plays before he got hurt.

They also come out of the bye with a completely healthy roster for the first time all season with Justin Fields, Laviska Shenault Jr, Tory Horton and Mario Williams -- four of the team's most explosive players -- set to play together for the first time this year and against a New Orleans team that has lost six straight games.

The loss to Pittsburgh was a tough one but the Raiders aren't technically out of the playoffs, at least now how the AFC currently stands. Pittsburgh is the current seventh seed with five losses on the season already, three more than the Raiders. Las Vegas essentially needs to finish the season 4-1 to have a shot at catching Pittsburgh and the rest of the AFC wild card contenders and with games against New Orleans, Tampa, Denver, Cincinnati and Atlanta, it's certainly doable.

Best player through weeks 1-12:
Even with the injury and a few down performances, it's arguably Fields who was leading the league in passing touchdowns prior to his injury. Damien Harris has also been impressive with 5.5 yards per carry and 88.2 rushing yards per game, currently second in the NFL with 1,058 rushing yards behind only Baltimore's Josh Jacobs, the former Raider. Jacobs is likely to miss the next couple of games, opening the door for Harris to eventually overtake him and potentially finish the season as the rushing king.

Defensively, it's clearly been Curtis Jacobs and his NFL leading 114 tackles and 20 tackles for loss who is not just running away with Defensive Rookie of the Year but potentially making a case for Defensive Player of the Year after being a much-debated draft pick.

Worst player through weeks 1-12:
By the advanced numbers, it's been Marcus Epps among the regular starters with a 60.9 PFF grade, the second lowest among players on the team with at least 400 snaps. The lowest is actually Carl Granderson who has rotated at EDGE opposite of Maxx Crosby, especially earlier in the season when the team was trying to figure out the best place to deploy Tyree Wilson who played more five-technique in the early part of the season but has since played more EDGE down the stretch.

Another candidate, given their high number of snaps played, is receiver Bo Melton. Melton has caught just four passes this season which is less than backup tight end Brevin Jordan (33), running backs Damien Harris (19), Miyan Williams (13), and even Zonovan Knight (6) whose played just 57 snaps on the season. Mario Williams has played in just four games compared to Melton's 12 and has already passed Melton with 13 receptions on the season.

Most Impressive game so far:
W 24-0 at Denver

Denver might make the playoffs as a wild card seed and even with a rookie quarterback, given the defense's struggles, shutting out a team is still impressive, and the offense was also efficient with Fields completing 70 percent of his passes, throwing for three touchdowns and the team rushing for 258 yards on the ground. This is the blueprint for the Raiders team this season and beyond and that game is what they want it to look like.

Least Impressive game so far:
L 52-34 vs. Los Angeles Chargers

The defense was terrible, even more than usual, against both the run and the pass and Fields got hurt right after signing that extension to solidify him as the starter for the future. Even before the injury, he wasn't playing well, completing just 9 of his 19 pass attempts for just 71 yards and an interception.

Contract negotiations at this point:
There's still some football left to be played but there’s some important players headed to free agency for 2025:

CB Nate Hobbs - The team's top corner last year, Hobbs has taken a step back this season but should be one of the players they look to bring back next year. Unfortunately, essentially all of the starters in the secondary are expiring contracts and bringing the core of the unit back is not going to be acceptable after their woes this past season. Hobbs will need to turn his season around if he wants to be one of the holdovers into next season.

S Tre'von Moehrig - Moehrig's play has been inconsistent this season with mediocre performances followed by straight up bad games and then a string of good games followed by mediocre and bad play. He'll need to be a more consistent player down the stretch if he, similar to Hobbs, wants to be one of the returning pieces of a secondary that could look different next season.

HB Damien Harris - The Raiders struck gold in free agency, signing Harris to replace Josh Jacobs for the same production at a fraction of the cost. Do they re-up with Harris at 27 or turn the keys to one of their young backs in Miyan Williams or Zamir White?

CB Michael Davis - The team's best outside corner but he turns 30 next season and could be looking to cash out. Las Vegas needs to upgrade at the position and while Davis is a solid CB2/CB3, he's not a cornerstone of a good secondary and might be looking to get paid like one.

CB Jeff Okudah - One of the bright spots in the secondary has been Okudah who is the team's second highest rated defensive back according to Pro Football Focus. Unlike the others, he's been a consistent player who could be looking at more playing time down the stretch, especially as the team starts to look into next season and possibly consider this season a lost cause.

S Marcus Epps - Epps has already lost snaps this season to a rookie in Decorian Patterson who outside of his blunder against Pittsburgh, has outplayed Epps thoroughly.

LB Robert Spillane - The leader of the defense but unfortunately, he's leading a bad unit and if the new regime wants to overhaul this defense, it'll likely come with new players at key position, leaving Spillane in a precarious position although he's been solid this season but nothing outstanding.

DE Jerry Tillery - Tillery showed flashes of being an elite pass rusher from the position last season but has really taken a step back this year with a slow start. He's improved over the past few weeks with 3.5 sacks in the last four games but he'll need similar production down the line if he wants the team to bring him back.

TE Brevin Jordan - A sneaky great find by the Raiders front office, trading for him last season for not very much draft capital. Jordan has six touchdowns on the season with 33 receptions, replacing the injured Michael Mayer for several games. He'll never be a complete tight end but as a receiving option, he's a good player they should look to re-sign.

WR Bo Melton - The trade of Davante Adams opened the door for Melton to be a big time player in this offense but he's failed to lived up to it and could see his snaps diminish down the stretch, ending all hopes of landing a deal with the team next season, at least a significant one.

Get a WR1 in free agency that's cheaper than Davante was going to be. Revamp the defense with likely a brand new secondary and some improvements along the DL. Win.

Detroit keeps it rolling, this time against Green Bay to overtake the struggling Bears
With their seventh consecutive victory to improve their record to 8-4 after a 1-4 start to the year, the Detroit Lions now sit alone at the top of the NFC North division.

David Montgomery rushed for two touchdowns while second-year running back Jahmyr Gibbs added 54 rushing yards in the 34-17 win over Green Bay. Aidan Hutchinson and Khalil Mack combined for three sacks with safeties Brandon Jones and Jordan Whitehead intercepting Green Bay Packers quarterback Jordan Love.

It was the fifth time in their last seven games that the offense scored over 24 points while Detroit's defense has held opponents to less than 21 points in their last two games and three times overall during this winning streak.

Meanwhile, Chicago suffered their fourth straight loss to drop their record to 7-5 and now find themselves in the thick of the NFC wild card race and their playoff hopes potentially dwindling. After scoring just three points last week on the road against the Giants in a 10-3 loss, the Bears offense scored just 14 points against Arizona in the 21-14 defeat. The Bears end the season against Atlanta, Houston and Jacksonville -- all at home -- before their final two games behind road trips to San Francisco and Indianapolis.
