Coach Davis' Take
Image
Wow! Just... wow! Sucks to be on that end of a tense game like that but what can I say. Both sides of the ball showed up for both teams and it came down to one play and they made it and we didn't. I'm forever grateful for this opportunity to get into coaching and no matter what happens going forward I'll always remember this season. Amazing ride.

Coach Davis' Player of the Game
Everyone on the team, on the coaching staff, in the athletic department. Just so grateful.

Ron English fired by EMU
Second straight 2-10 season plus “turmoil” ends English's 5 year tenure
By Patt Mussman | Dec 2, 2013, 1:15pm EST

After a second straight 2-10 season and with an overall record of 12-48 over five seasons Eastern Michigan has fired head coach Ron English.

After going 0-12 in 2009 and 2-10 in 2010 English led the team to a 6-6 record in 2011 that got folks around the program very excited.

Another 2-10 season in 2012 was a disappointment and a third two win campaign in 2013 leaves English looking for work.

Along with the poor on field performance English seemingly lost control of the rest of his coaching staff, evidenced both by a very public fued between offensive coordinator Stan Parrish and defensive coordinator Porter Davis. English also failed to make any personnell or schematic changes when Parrish's offense struggled mightily.

“It's not just the on field product.” A source close to the school explained. “There were concerns about lack of control over the program and the rest of his staff and a perception of lack of effort.”

English will likely be a sought after defensive coordinator, a position he held at Michigan and Louisville before taking the EMU head coach position.

The school also announced that Parrish and the rest of the offensive staff had been let go.

Porter and some of the defensive staff will be allowed to interview for positions when a new head coach is hired.

Porter Davis did a good job
Davis did more with less than previous DCs at EMU
By Patt Mussman | Dec 4, 2013, 2:15pm EST

Despite a 2-10 season and the drama surrounding the team EMU's young defensive coordinator Porter Davis should be commended for a job well done.

Eastern Michigan gave up 30.7 points per game in 2013 after giving up 37.6 PPG in 2012 with what was arguably a more talented unit. The Eagles held teams under 30 points in six games this season as opposed to just three times in 2012.

Davis had a number of underclassmen playing significant roles, including true freshman linebacker LaVonte Robinson, who Davis helped develop into one of the best players on the team. Robinson was named 1st team all MAC and a Freshman All-American despite barely cracking the top 2,000 as a prospect.

Safety Donald Coleman was named second team All-MAC as well.

EMU had six new starters on defense this season and ultimately improved the results on field.

Davis was also very creative in finding ways to get players on the field, they frequently lined up in five or six different defensive alignments in games. 3-4, 3-3-5, 4-4, 4-3, 4-2-5 were all used extensively as well as various dime and goal line looks. Safety Pudge Cotton, one of the better and more experienced players on the team, was used at a variety of positions in an effort to put him in position to make plays. He was 4th on the team in tackles and recorded a pair of interceptions that included a pick six.

Davis did all this despite a rift in the coaching staff that started early in the season and culminated with a near fight with offensive coordinator near the end of the season.

Davis' future with the team is unknown at this time as head coach Ron English, offensive coordinator Stan Parrish and all of the offensive staff was let go. Davis and most of the rest of the defensive staff were told thay can interview for positions once a new head coach has been hired.

Davis has not made any indications of his intentions and says he is letting the process play out.

Hopefully the team will have the foresight to retain Davis in the same role or at least some role going forward.
