Huskies survive Cougars' air raid offense to win Apple Cup for 78th time
Even with a 24-3 lead in the 3rd quarter, Husky head coach Jedd Fisch knew his team had to stay aggressive against Washington State's explosive offense.
"We're well aware of how capable they [the Cougars] are of scoring fast," Fisch told reporters during the team's post-game conference. "So we needed to keep our foot on the gas pedal."
It was ultimately freshman tight end Ahmad Sahara's first career touchdown - a 1-yard run - that was the difference between Washington and Washington State, whose early mistakes likely cost them a potential victory down the stretch in Pullman. The win marked the Huskies' 78th win over the Cougars in the Apple Cup series and the program's 4th consecutive victory after narrowly defeating Washington State in the final seconds of last year's matchup.
The win didn't come mistake-free, however. Grady Gross missed two field goals in 16 mile-per-hour winds, and Demond Williams Jr. continued to struggle staying upright, taking 5 sacks. The redshirt freshman has vowed to continue working on his decision-making after another week of trying to make too many things happen with his own feet. That being said, Williams Jr. was responsible for 2 of Washington's 3 rushing touchdowns and threw a perfect ball on Tobias Merriweather's 31-yard touchdown.
Washington got off to a quick 10-0 start after a Gross field goal and a Deven Bryant interception on the ensuing drive by the Cougars. Up by 21 points in the 3rd quarter, the Huskies saw their lead be trimmed to just a touchdown after John Mateer threw 2 touchdowns in the 3rd quarter.
Following a 19-yard touchdown pass to Tre Shackelford in the 4th quarter, the Cougars were unable to get the ball back for a chance to tie the game.
