Does New Orleans Have Enough Juice to End Los Angeles’ Playoff Run?

The Los Angeles Lakers find themselves back in the Western Conference Finals for the second year in a row and for the second year in a row, they are facing the New Orleans Pelicans in the NBA Playoffs. Last season, Los Angeles closed out the series in five games after bouncing back from a huge Game 1 loss. Many feel the series may have played out a little different or would have gone to a possible 7 games had Zion Williamson not gotten injured in the first half of Game 2 last year, missing the rest of the playoffs.

“We can’t dwell on the “What Ifs”. We just have to focus on the now,” said Pelicans head coach Willie Green. “We have everybody healthy now.

New Orleans is battled tested in these playoffs. The Pelicans have played a total of 13 out of 14 possible games in the first two rounds, with the Conference Semifinals going to 7 games against the Oklahoma City Thunder. Williamson has been leaned on heavily in these playoffs, and is currently averaging a 25.3 points per game. An interesting matchup for this series will be at the shooting guard spot with Marcus Sasser and Doug Christie being expected to help guarding the 6’7” Dyson Daniels.

On the other side of this series, the Los Angeles Lakers have swept both of their opponents and are well rested going into the Western Conference Finals. They are the only team that remains undefeated in the playoffs. LeBron James went out with an injury at the end of Game 4 in the opening round against Golden State. He saw limited minutes against the Denver Nuggets, but Los Angeles was led by this year’s award winners, MVP David Grace and Defensive Player of the Year Anthony Davis to get another sweep. Grace and Davis averaged 26 and 17 points, respectively, in the Denver series. The Lakers have four players averaging double digit scoring the playoffs and Davis is averaging a double-double of 18 points and 13 rebounds.

“Depth is a luxury that most teams do not have this year, but we are fortunate enough to have guys ready and willing to step up when it’s time to carry the load,” said James. “I was fortunate enough to not have to push myself in that last series.”

James expects to be back at 100% for the Conference Finals and he will need to be in order to contain Williamson.
