Cincinnati Bearkats
2015 Record: 7-6(4-5) 7th in American Conference
2015 Bowl Result: Beat San Diego State
Head Coach: Tom Herman (7-6 Career, 7-6 @ Cincinnati)
Offensive Coordinator: Eddie Gran
Defensive Coordinator: Art Kaufman
Offensive Scheme: Spread
Base Defense: 4-3

GUNNER KIEL HOPES TO CUT DOWN ON INTERCEPTIONS AFTER THROWING 15 IN 2015
The Bearkats have a solid offense that scored 389 points last season. Senior quarterback Gunner Kiel is the catalyst for success. He has talented players around him including one of the conferences top tight ends in D.J. Dowdy. At receiver he has one of the fastest players in the nation in Nate Cole. Deionte Buckley and E.J. Junior form a solid tandem in the backfield. The offensive line is solid and experienced overall.

Cincinnati gave up 363 points on defense last season and they may have a hard time matching that number this season. The defensive line is a concern outside of sophomore tackle Serge Carter. Senior Ey'Shawn McClain leads the linebacking corps. Safeties Derek Cox and Andre Jones are solid on the back end. Overall the team has a number of question marks on defense but the offense should be able to put up a fair amount of points and push the team to a successful 2016 season.

Freshman to Watch
LB Calvin Miller
Miller looks to have won the starting middle linebacker job out of spring practice. The true freshman has solid speed and agility and is a good enough tackler. The coaching staff feels like he will pick things up quickly. Expect a somewhat short leash as the team has other more experienced linebackers waiting in the wings.

CASEY COCHRAN HOPES TO LEAD UCONN TO BACK TO BACK CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIPS
Connecticut had a very balanced team in 2015, leading the conference in points scored and finishing second in points allowed. They have one of the top quarterbacks in the conference in Casey Cochran and one of the top defensive units as well.
Joseph Williams and Josh Marriner are a decent duo in the backfield. Senior Dhameer Bradler leads a group of solid receivers and the offensive line is solid inside.

Defensively the team is led by one of the top player in the conference in tackle Mykal Myers. The linebackers are led by Omaine Stephens and are an above average group. The secondary has another top player in safety Obi Melfonwu.

Connecticut has the talent on both sides of the ball to compete for another conference championship.

Freshman to Watch

Snyder won the starting right tackle job out of spring practice and looks to have the physical tools to do the job. He may need help with some of the better pass rushers in the conference. Cochran will be counting on Snyder and the rest of the line to hold up if he is to repeat his success from 2015.

East Carolina Pirates
2015 Record: 2-10(2-7) 12th in American Conference
2015 Bowl Result: N/A
Head Coach: Jay Niemann (13-12 Career, 0-0 @ ECU)
Offensive Coordinator: Robert Matthews
Defensive Coordinator: Dominic Wynn
Offensive Scheme: Spread
Base Defense: 4-3

TE BRYCE WILLIAMS WILL NEED TO BE A LEADER FOR THE ECU OFFENSE IN 2016
With Memphis leaving for Conference USA East Carolina may have little competition for a spot in the basement of the American Conference in 2016.

Ethan Long attempted 22 passes for the Pirates in 2015 and is the most experienced quarterback on the roster. Derrick Sullivan ran for 211 yards and is the leader among current runningbacks. Quataye Smyre is the only wide receiver with more than 15 career receptions. Tight ends Bryce Williams and Darren Dowdell are by far the most talented players on offense so they will have to find ways to get them both on the field and get them both the ball frequently. The offensive line is reasonably experienced but struggled in 2015.

Defensively they have good players in DE Randall Anderson and LB Devaris Brunson but there are a lot of questions aside from them. Ultimately ECU doesn't look to have a whole lot going for them this year, they will likely be one of the bottom teams in the conference once again unless first year head coach Jay Niemann can find some magic.

Freshman to Watch
LB Josh Bozeman
The closest thing ECU has to an impact freshman is sophomore linebacker Josh Bozeman. Bozeman redshirted in 2014 and played very sparingly in 2015. He is being asked to anchor the defense now. Obviously his development will have a big impact on ECU's 2016 season.

HOUSTON QB GREG WARD COULD BE SET FOR A BREAKOUT YEAR
Dual threat QB Greg Ward accounted for almost 3,000 yards in 2015 but the coaching staff is hoping for far more than 22 total touchdowns and less turnovers in 2016. Runningback Joseph Glenn is unproven. The Cougars have a strong group of wide receivers led by former Alabama transfer Raheem Falkins. Tyler Spencer is a solid tight end. The offensive line is above average and mostly experienced.

The defense should be in the top half of the conference with talent at all three levels. Defensive end Cameron Malveaux, linebackers Xavier Phillips and Melvin Jones and cornerback Bryson Echols give opposing offenses plenty to think about.

If Ward has a better season the Cougars have the talent on both sides of the ball to be competitive. They aren't one of the top teams but they should finish in the top half of the conference.

Freshman to Watch

Kiniry has won the nickel corner position and will be on the field a good amount as the team plays a lot of nickel. Kiniry will be tasked with stopping slot receivers. If he comes on strong Houston should have a solid secondary. Houston will also be using true freshman punter Anthony Frazier in 2016.

Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns
2015 Record: 12-1(8-0 Sun Belt) 1st in Sun Belt
2015 Bowl Result: Lost to Nebraska
Head Coach: Porter Davis (12-1 Career, 12-1 @ ULL)
Offensive Coordinator: Kenny Edenfield
Defensive Coordinator: Reggie Johnson
Offensive Scheme: Edenfield/Porter
Base Defense: Multiple

THE CAJUNS WILL LEAN ON BROOKS HAACK AND A NEW OFFENSIVE SCHEME IN 2016
In making the jump from the Sun Belt conference to the American Louisiana has gone from big fish in a small pond to big fish in a medium pond. The American conference will certainly provide more of a challenge for coach Porter Davis and his squad but the team brings substantial talent to their new home.

Quarterback Brooks Haack, runningback Kyle Hicks and wide receiver Scott Austin form one of the best offensive trios in the American Conference and head coach Porter Davis and new offensive coordinator Kenny Edenfield have been scheming ways to get historic results from them since Edenfield signed his contract.

“You're going to see a mash up of a number of concepts when we have the ball.” Davis said when asked about the team's offensive scheme. “Really on both sides of the ball actually.”

Tight end James Moody should also be a big factor in the offensive game plan. The receiver group will need someone to step up behind Austin. Mikey Porter Sr, the most likely number two, caught 18 passes in 2015.

The offensive line is breaking in new starters at four of the five positions and looks to be less talented overall than in 2015 but is anchored by JR center Ryan Hoefeld who is one of the best in the conference.

Defensively there are wholesale changes with new starters expected at eight positions in the 3-3-5 that they used the most in 2015. T.J. McCollum is the only holdover in the secondary and he is moving from the nickel to the number one corner, making him essentially a new starter as well.

Overall Louisiana has experienced, talented players in key positions and if the new starters are able to get up to speed reasonably well they should be able to compete for a conference championship.

Treu freshman Delmond Boudreaux has been taking a lot of snaps with the first team defense both as the nickel and as an outside cornerback. Boudreaux was the #2 rated cornerback by Rivals.com. With a lot of turnover in their secondary the Cajuns will need him to catch on quickly.

WITH FOUR FRESHMAN ON THE ROSTER AT QB THE SHIPPIES WILL LEAN HARD ON THEIR RUNNING GAME, LED BY DEMOND BROWN
In 2015 Navy rode their option offense to a berth in the conference championship before falling to Connecticut and strangely failing to get a bowl invite with seven wins.

They've seen a big roster turnover at quarterback where they now have four freshmen competing for the starting job. Demond Brown ran for 1,531 yards and nine scores last season, he'll be a big part of the offensive attack along with Colin Osborne and Ernest Alexander. The fullbacks are all freshmen as well. Chris Craft, Andrew Scott and Craig Scott are talented receivers but likely won't get a ton of opportunities to show it. Alex Brown is a great tight end as well. The offensive line is mostly experienced and talented and should do well opening holes for the running game.

The defensive line is quite talented and led by end Victor Perez. Junior Jermaine Carter leads a solid group of linebackers and the secondary features senior corner Brendon Clements and a largely unproven group around him.

Navy will likely have a down year with so may young players in significant roles.

SMU QB NEAL BURCHAM SHOULD BE ONE OF THE BEST IN THE CONFERENCE IN 2016
Neal Burcham threw for over 3,400 yards along with 34 touchdowns in 2015. He also threw 20 interceptions, a stat that certainly cost Houston a couple of wins and a bowl berth. Head coach June Jones will try to scheme to cut back on turnovers and could lean one Prescott Line, one of the top running backs in the conference, more this season. The receivers are solid but not stellar. The offensive line is experienced as a group and above average skill wise.

Defensively SMU looks to be in the lower middle of the pack in the conference. Senior linebacker Nick Horton leads the way up front while Ajee Montes and Ty Law form a very good duo at cornerback.

SMU looks like a middle of the conference team in 2016.

Temple Owls
2015 Record: 10-3(6-3) 3rd in American Conference
2015 Bowl Result: Beat Eastern Michigan
Head Coach: Dana Holgorsen (37-26 Career, 0-0 @ Temple)
Offensive Coordinator: Marcus Satterfield
Defensive Coordinator: Chris Thurmond
Offensive Scheme: Air Raid
Base Defense: 3-4

AFTER A DOWN YEAR IN 2015 AVERY WILLIAMS HOPES TO BOUNCE BACK TO HIS 2014 FORM
Temple finished second to Connecticut in the East in 2015 with a 6-3 record. The Owls were the fifth lowest scoring offense in the conference but also had the stingiest defense. Despite their Air Raid offensive philosophy expect them to find ways to get the ball in senior runningback Avery Williams’ hands. Williams ran for 893 yards in 2015 and also picked up 316 yards receiving. He is absolutely their most dangerous offensive weapon. P.J. Walker threw more interceptions than touchdowns last season so the Owls will need a better season from their redshirt junior. Walker is a legitimate dual-threat who ran for over 1,000 yards and scored ten rushing touchdowns in 2015. The receivers are middle of the pack with senior Nathan Hairston the only player with over 30 career receptions. The offensive line is one of the weaker units in the conference with RG Dion Dawkins being the only player of note at the position.

Defensively the Owls lost a lot of talent from last season and will have to lean heavily on outside linebacker Buddy Brown and cornerback Nate L. Smith. Senior safeties Jihaad Pretlow and Stephaun Marshall should be able to clean up a lot of the inevitable mistakes in front of them.

Temple should still have enough talent on board to finish in the top half of the conference.

Freshman to Watch
LT Xavier Bonner
Having a true freshman at left tackle is a bold move especially when you have a more experienced player that fits the mold of the position. Bonner is a talented player and has the physical ability to excel at the position. He will need to learn quickly to keep his quarterbacks upright. Temple also has true freshman WR Cody Matthews in the mix, he is expected to be the third receiver this season.

2016 Projection
4th in American Conference, 3rd in East Division
