Tulane Green Wave
2015 Record: 5-7(4-5) 9th in American Conference

Defensive Coordinator: Thom Kaumeyer
Offensive Scheme: Pro
Base Defense: 4-3

TULANE QB DEVIN POWELL HOPES TO BE MENTIONED AS ONE OF THE TOP QBS IN THE CONFERENCE THIS SEASON
Tulane went 4-5 in the conference with a struggling offense and a middle of the road defense. The Green Wave will need big years from key seniors in order to break out of their funk.

Quarterback Devin Powell had a decent season in throwing for 2,319 yards and 24 touchdowns to 11 interceptions but they will need more from him if 2016 is to be an improvement. Josh Rounds ran for 844 yards and eight scores last season and those numbers will need a significant boost as well. The entire wide receiver group has caught 25 passes and Tristan Cooper has caught 23 of them. The offensive line is largely unproven aside from guard Nathan Shienle.

Defensively things look a bit better on the defensive line with James McFarland and Corey Smith leading the way. Those two should be able to make opposing quarterbacks uncomfortable which they will need because there is not much proven talent at linebacker or in the secondary.

Tulane will struggle to stay out of the basement once again in 2016.

Free safety is a tough position to jump into as a true freshman but that’s what Tulane is asking Jeremy Merritt to do. Merritt will be responsible for reading offenses and calling coverages from day one for the Green Wave. Mistakes could certainly lead to splash plays for opposing offenses, especially early in the season.

2015 Record: 3-9(3-6) 10th in American Conference

TULSA RB JAMES FLANDERS WILL HAVE TO CARRY A HEAVY WORKLOAD IN 2016
In terms of points per game Tulsa had the worst offense and the third worst defense in the American conference in 2015. That’s not a recipe for success. Head coach Lou Spanos had better have some tricks up his sleeve in 2016 if he hopes to stick around.

QBs Joseph Calcagni and Ben Oberste split time in 2015 with neither having great success. Those two along with Dane Evans will be battling for the job up to and likely throughout the season as the team tries to find its way. James Flanders looks to be the lead back and with career numbers of 797 yards and one touchdown he is pretty green. The team has some talent at receiver in Keevan Lucas and Justin Gant. However, Lucas’ five career receptions are the only receptions any of them have made in game action. Senior tight end Tyler Wilson should be a big part of the offense again coming off his 557 yard five touchdown 2015 campaign. The offensive line struggled last season and has new starters at LT and C.

On the other side of the ball Tulsa has a talented line made up of Derrick Alexander, Dalton Rodriguez and Russell Tremblay. Linebacker looks to be a bit of a weakness and the team will need a big season out of OLB Jeff Archie to mask that. Senior cornerback Darrell Williams is the one bright spot in the secondary.

Tulsa looks to be a lower tier team once again in 2016.

UCF SAFETY D.J. KILLINGS IS NOT ONLY ONE OF THE BEST IN THE CONFERENCE, HE’S AMONG THE BEST IN THE NATION
Vanderbilt transfer Johnny McCrary threw for 2,833 yards and 23 touchdowns with just seven interceptions while also running for 490 yards and eight scores for UCF in 2015. With a year as the starter under his belt the Golden Knights are hoping for even more in 2016. Micah Reed looks to be the lead runningback, he ran for 458 yards and four scores as a backup last season. Senior Dareen Owi is the leading returning receiver with 24 receptions in 2015 for 294 yards and two touchdowns. The offensive line features center Colby Watson who is one of the top centers in the nation but is average or maybe slightly below aside from him.

Defensively the team is led by the duo of D.J. Killings and Drico Johnson at safety. Senior Luke Adams leads the defensive line that is an average unit. Linebackers are led by Mario Mathis and again the unit is average. Cornerbacks Jeremy Davis and Shaquil Griffin are two of the better ones in the conference. The secondary is one of the best in the conference overall and they will make up for a lot of the shortcomings in front of them.

UCF is probably as middle of the pack as a team can be.

USF Bulls
2015 Record: 8-5(5-4) 5th in American Conference

Offensive Coordinator: Walt Wells
Defensive Coordinator: Chuck Bresnahan

USF SAFETY JOHNNY WARD IS ONE OF THE BEST IN THE AMERICAN CONFERENCE
Miami transfer Gray Crow finally gets his shot as being the day one starter for a team and the Bulls are hoping for a stellar season from the senior passer. He certainly has a lot to prove and junior Mike White is right on his heels if he stumbles. Stafon McCray ran for 1,103 yards and six scores last season and with questions at QB he could be asked to do even more in 2016. McCray and junior Darius Tice (447Yds 3TD in 2015) should form a nice 1-2 punch. The receivers are somewhat experienced with Ardarius Stewart and Zach Benjamin each catching over 25 passes in 2015, however, the group is not very deep after them. The offensive line is one of the least experienced in the conference with just one senior and two freshmen most likely to start.

On the defensive line tackle James Hamilton and end Eric Lee will wreak a lot of havoc for offensive lines while the linebackers look to be a bit of a weakness. Fortunately Jalen Spencer, Lamar Robbins and Johnny Ward make up one of the best secondary trios in the conference.

USF should be a top half of the conference team in 2016 and if Gray Crow lights it up they could sneak into the running for a conference title.

Freshman to Watch

The offensive line is one of the positions where working together as a unit and knowing what the man next to you will do is the most vital. USF will likely be starting redshirt freshman Damon Thompson at center and true freshman Walter Hines at right tackle. The team also has a sophomore at left tackle leaving guards Dominique Threatt and Jeremi Hall as the leaders on the line.

2016 Projection
5th in American Conference, 4th in East Division

Louisiana Finalizes and Releases Roster
By Andrew Bernardi

After opening their fall practice session Louisiana has released an official roster. With several weeks to go before the first game the depth chart is still in the works but we expect to see at least an initial one a couple weeks before the season opener against Purdue.

In order to hopefully get some more injuries I used random.org to generate a list of 10 numbers between 1-70. Sorting by overall rating I counted from the top and edited the injury rating down 10 points on the 10 players those numbers represent.

Set 1: 69
Set 2: 14
Set 3: 49
Set 4: 59
Set 5: 13
Set 6: 26
Set 7: 7
Set 8: 32
Set 9: 43
Set 10: 12

As you can see there were a lot of highly rated player effected by this, we'll see how it plays out!

Playbooks.

New offensive coordinator Kenny Edenfield has an Air Raid background. To incorporate this I have created an all new playbook with Troy's playbook as a base. I used more than half of the playbook as is and used elements from my own playbook mixed in.

Defensive coordinator Reggie Johnson is a 4-3 guy. I have added a few more 4-3 plays and 4-2-5 plays to represent this change. Since Porter Davis is a former defensive coordinator he still holds more influence on this side of the ball.

Coach Davis has 100% playcalling control on defense. On offense it is split between Davis and Edenfield. To represent this I will use "ask coach" roughly 50% of the time.

Cajuns Relase First Depth Chart
By Andrew Bernardi
Image
For the offensive side of things there aren't really any surprises. Based on last year's performances and spring and fall practices everything here is basically as expected. The closest battles were Nixon and Franz III for RB2, Carter and Keith for the 5th WR spot and Schmidt and Taylor for the starting left guard position.
Image
Defensively Louisiana has listed their base as a 4-3. Expect to see a wide variety of formations and personnel used as they have in the past under Davis. Expect heavy rotation on the line as battles at both defensive end positions were quite close. Davis and Johnson love their depth at tackle as well. McCollum and Boudreaux battled for the top corner position and they will move around depending on the opponent. Walker and Greenwood was a very close battle as well and they could flip flop throughout the season. At safety expect to see freshman Matt Palmer in three safety sets with Wilson playing up close to the line.
Image
Somewhat surprising that Nixon won the top kick return job. Guerrero was very close and Walker, Jones and Greenwood all returned kicks in the preseason as well so that could be a "by committee" job.
