"It was just a few words."

"It's a big deal," Beck punched James in the arm, "When were you going to tell me?"

"It was more than just a few," Iman pilled on, "The man was fawning over this guy, said he wasn't just a pretty face but also had personality."

"He hasn't even spoken to me since," James shrugged, "It can't be that big of a deal and it's almost been a week."

The conversation died down as they got closer to the room. It was easy to tell which room they were headed to as a group of people were huddled outside of it, many of them familiar faces.

"Coach," James said as he gave coach Marcus a hug, "I've been missing you, man."

"Sure you do," coach Marcus said as he pulled away from James and gave him a fake smile, "You sure as hell ain't missing that end-zone."

James simply smiled back before he continued to greet the rest of the ensemble. Coach Collins had been in the hospital for a week now, as they wanted to keep him and run a few tests. A few of the seniors had slowly started trickling in to visit coach Collins with Iman and James taking the opportunity to do so after Thursday's walk-thru practice. Coach Collins had coached Beck older brothers as well and was a family friend, graduating in the same class as her father.

"I heard you scored five touchdowns," coach Collins sat up once he saw the trio walk through the door, flowers in hand, "You're getting soft, bringing me gifts and shit."

"She insisted," James pointed towards Beck who was the first to go over and hug him. He looked spry and young, nothing like James imagined outside of the tubes that led from his arm.

James and Iman sort of hovered around, unsure how to greet their head coach. Instead, James wandered around the room, eventually making his way to the window and looking out of it onto the parking lot.

"Fresno State, huh?" coach Collins cleared his throat.

"Did everyone get the news?" James joked, looking towards Iman, "The man barely spoke to me and gave me his card. What am I going to do, call him?"

"Put your highlight tape together," coach Collins explained, "You go out, you ball for the next few games, put something on film, more on tape and then you call him. He'll probably be calling you by then."

....

"Jackson hands it off to Fuller whose going to find enough wiggle room to squeeze into the endzone for the touchdown!"

....

"Baker brings it down and he's got the touchdown!"

....

"Jackson rolls left, looks back to his right and he's got a wide open Austin White! White at the 30....20....10..5...touchdown! Poly continues their rout of Cabrillo with the 42-0 lead before the half!"

....

"The Poly offense continues to click here as Jackson strolls into the end zone to make it 35-10 here against Compton High!"

....

"Jackson breaks one off here and it's a footrace! He's not being tracked down folks and there you have it, a seventy-yard touchdown for Jackson as Poly hangs 52 points on Tarbabes of Compton High!"

....

"Jackson is sac....no, he escapes! He runs right and he's going to throw a prayer down the field and it's caught! It's caught! Baker is still on his feet....the 30...the 20...the 10..oh my...touchdown! Jackson somehow gets out of it and Baker somehow brings it down for their third touchdown connection of the first half here against Jordan!"

.....

"Jackson and freshman quarterback Brian McCarthy are both in the backfield, some sort of trick play here and when you're up 62-0 in the third quarter, why not?"

"Empty out your bag of tricks."

"Jackson motions out to receiver and he's going to motion back in and the ball is snapped and it's a sweep to Jackson. He stops...looks....he's got McCarthy and he's got space! McCarthy's got some wheels folks! McCarthy across the fifty....the forty....the thirty......the twenty.....the ten...the five...another touchdown!"

....

"The whistle blows to end this bloodbath as Poly continues their dominance with an 81-0 win over Jordan, the largest margin of victory in the coach Collins' era and they do it without their head coach who is still recovering from health issues."

"This is going pretty well," coach Butler shrugged as he took a sip from his cup, making a face as it went down his throat.

"Come on," James rolled his eyes as he leaned up against the counter, observing as the conversation between the two men in front of him continued.

"We really like what he can bring to our team," coach Carlton looked over at James who had made his way back into coach Butler's living room, taking a seat next to his dad, "We'd love for him come up for a visit."

Tim simply nodded his head before he got distracted by the television again. Coach Butler stepped in, engaging with some small talk with a fellow play caller although the majority of their conversation was about the travel, recruiting and social media usage among players. Similar to his father, he would weave in and out of the conversation.

"I better get going," coach Carlton got up and got to shaking hands, "I hope you gentlemen have a fine night and James, looking forward to seeing you play tomorrow night. You're a heck of a watch from the stands."

"Thanks," James shook his hand before he watched as coach Butler escorted him out.

"I've never heard of Azura," Tim cleaned his teeth, "What conference they play, the Pac-Zero?"

"It's Azusa," coach Butler corrected, "They're division two, about an hour from here."

"That's it?" Tim asked as he got up, "Am I free to go now?"

"Tomorrow is senior night," coach Butler let out a deep sigh, "Your son's senior night."

"What's that?"

"Last home game as a senior," coach Butler explained.

"They got football in Azusa and they got senior nights," Tim laughed, "I learn something new from you every time, Devin."

"The parents typically walk the seniors out," coach Butler tried to make eye contact with James but the senior's eyes were evasive, "We ask that the parents show up about an hour before kickoff, it's at Veterans Stadium, like always. Flowers are encouraged"

"I see," Tim rubbed his beard, "Mind if I take one from the road?"

Without waiting for an answer, Tim helped himself to the kitchen and grabbed another beer, his fifth of the night.

"You'll be there?" coach Butler asked as Tim had started to head towards the door.

"Wouldn't miss it for the world."

....

"Number one, corner back and running back, Iman Fuller."

He kept looking back at the stands and the small gate that separated the bleachers from the field. It was the only entry point for someone from the stands would be able to make their way onto the field.

"Number six, safety, Gordon Parker."

In the movies, this would be where that red pickup truck would come screeching across the parking lot, tail-whipping before an out-breath man ran onto the field with flowers in hands.

"Number seven, quarterback, James Jackson."

The fans erupted into cheers as James flashed a smile. He looked back at the gate one more time for good measure. This wasn't the movies. James took a step forward before he saw coach Butler jogging from the sideline and towards him. Iman also left his mom and dad, handing them the flowers back before walking towards James as well. Gordon did the same. And then Cam. And then Austin. Soon, nearly the entire team made the 10-yard walk across the laid out red carpet.

"You're never alone, son. Not as long as I'm breathing."

....

"A standing ovation here for the Long Beach offense as they take the field for the first time tonight, the last night these seniors will play in front of that crowd."

"They're a Cinderella story. They lose so much firepower to graduation, lose even more to transfers and return just one starter in Reginald Dominguez at slot. James Jackson, who was an unknown just two months ago, is arguably the hottest quarterback in the state right now."

"Speaking of Jackson, he lines up under center, White at fullback with Fuller at running back. We don't see a lot of this from Poly. Referee blows the whistle and we're off. Jackson gets the snaps, fakes the hand-off to Fuller and takes a deep drop back...looks...looks....let's it go and Baker has it! He's not going to be caught and look at that blazing speed! Eighty-yards on the first play from scrimmage! Buckle up, Lakewood!"

....

"Jackson on the quick out to Landing, breaks a tackle, gets to the outside and he's going to waltz into the endzone!"

.....

"Jackson on the sprint out to his right and he's got Landing wide open once again! He's got it and another walk-in touchdown for the junior!"

....

"Jackson evades the sack, runs to his left....back to his right....steps up, dumps it off to Fuller out in the flats who makes a defender miss, cuts inside and he's going across the field and picking up steam and picking up blockers! He gets to the outside and he's going to sprint into the endzone!"

....

"Jackson losing ground here as he keeps back pedaling away from the rush, slips out of the sack and he's going to find Baker wide open in the endzone!"

....

"Jackson play fake, pumps...looks left...looks right...back to his left and he's got White in the back of the line for a touchdown!"

.....

"And with that touchdown, likely his last play of the night, Jackson has his sixth touchdown of the night."

"Talk about leaving on a mark. Five incompletions, six touchdowns, 302 yards, averaged almost 22 yards per completion, just big play after big play for the senior."

"If this 64-0 score holds, Long Beach would have outscored it's Moore League opponents 335-10 led by the dominant Jackson."

"He's fun to watch, Chris. I call him 'Jimmy Touchdown', he's got the goods. We had questions about his arm and when you talk to people around the program, around the school, this wasn't expected. People almost folded their tents when Jackson was announced the starter, benched after the loss to Mission before getting his spot back."

"Think we see Jimmy Touchdown on Saturday's?"

"I hope so."

"Don't forget the cheese!"

James' facial expressions did not change as Beck had to lean up against him to stop herself from falling down as she was laughing so damn hard. He had heard the phrase a few times tonight and had figured out that it was being said sarcastically but he still very much felt on the outside of an inside joke.

"Keith," Beck placed her hand on James' chest, "This is James. James, you know, this is Keith."

"What's good, bro?" Keith shook James hand and tried to finish the handshake off with a hug but James kept him at distance with his left arm.

"Just hanging," James forced a smile.

"Who are you supposed to be?" Keith pointed at James' black shirt.

"Jimmy Neutron," Beck said with a sarcastic tone, "He's still in high school so he's too cool to play dress up."

"Enjoy it," Keith shook his head, "I know it doesn't look it but this college shit is not worth it. Classes and lectures and tutoring and...."

"Thanks for explaining college to me," James interjected.

"I'll see you around," Keith's face quickly changed, "Beck, you're still down for tomorrow morning right?"

"Wouldn't miss it," Beck patted him on the shoulder before taking a look inside James' cup, "Drink up, I'm lapping you!"

"I'm fine," James shot back, taking a sip of his drink, "I'd prefer to not have Iman blow my head off for crashing his car tonight."

"Tonight?" Beck looked up at James with puppy eyes, "I thought you were staying the night."

"Sounded like you had plans," James shrugged.

"Which plans?"

James simply scoffed before taking another swig at his cup and throwing it on the ground, not bothering to look for the nearest trash can.

"You're being weird," Beck commented as she followed him to a more secluded area of the house, "You've been a dick to like all of my friends and just an ass overall tonight."

"I've been the same I'm always am," James replied, "Maybe that's weird to you now and I don't think you're allowed to be the judge on weird. Don't forget the cheese is not that fucking funny."

"What?" Beck shook her head from side to side, "It would be funny if you were here and knew that Tr....."

"But I'm not!" James shouted, loud enough to get a few looks, "I'm not fucking here, Beck."

"Calm down," Beck took a step back.

"And all of your friends? They all happen to have dicks."

"That's not true," she scoffed, "Amy, Chloe, Allis...."

"That's not the fucking point!"

"You're right," Beck folded her arms, "Because it doesn't matter if my friends have dicks because you sure as shit don't get to throw that shit at my face."

"What's that supposed to mean?"

"Come on," Beck rolled her eyes, "You know what I'm talking about. You've been running around since we've been together and let's be honest, are we even really together?"

"You're deflecting," James waved her off.

"I'm not, I own up to my shit. You want to know who I've fucked since I've been here?"

"Get the fuck out my face," James groaned as he pushed her away.

"Stephen, Austin, Johnathan and honestly, I've been thinking about Keith. He sort of hooked up with Allison but I don't think she would car...."

Before she could finish her sentence, James had his hands around her throat. She flailed at him, landing a few shots but he continued to drive her into the wall until there was a bit thud, drawing attention from the crowd.

"Hey!" yelled one the nearby girls as she dug her nail into James' back and tried to rip him off her but he remained steady. She hit him in the head with her cup, causing him to turn around and with his unoccupied left hand, he struck her in the face and sent her tumbling back.

A larger crowd gathered, this time with a few males who started to charge at James. He threw Beck into a corner as she held her neck, trying to catch her breath. He got into a quasi-boxing stance, launching a jab at the first guy but he missed. He didn't bother doubling back and aimed for the next guy, striking him in the face with a punch. He threw a few more punches but he was eventually swarmed and they managed to get a hold of his arms as they pinned him against the same wall Beck was up against.

The struggle continued for a few more seconds before he ran out of energy and stopped fighting back. That's when the fight began. They all took turns delivering blows to James, both in the face and to the chest and stomach.

"Stop!" yelled Beck from the ground as a few girls had began surrounding her, including some of the ones James had met tonight.

"Throw his ass out," Keith commanded to the group of about half-a-dozen guys that were holding James down.
