San Antonio Spurs vs. Phoenix Suns 2026 NBA Playoffs:
Odds, prediction and projected lineups
The Silver and Black, led by Victor Wembanyama, will face an old playoff rival in the Phoenix Suns in the first round of the NBA Playoffs
The San Antonio Spurs are back in the playoffs after a seven-year drought and are doing so in a major fashion, coming in as the top-seed in the West with the NBA's best record, reaching sixty-five wins for the second time in the illustrious franchise's history.
They made it to the Western Conference Semifinals that year, eventually losing to the Oklahoma City Thunder that were led by Kevin Durant. Durant will face off with the Spurs once more, this time leading an old rival in the Phoenix Suns. The rivalry dates back to the 1990s, when the Spurs were led by David Robinson, and the Phoenix Suns were propelled by a number of players, including Dan Majerle, Kevin Johnson, and Tom Chambers. The rivalry continued into the 2000s with Tim Duncan and Steve Nash leading the Spurs and the Suns respectively. The Spurs hold the edge in the all-time, regular season and postseason series but the Suns won the last playoff matchup, sweeping the Spurs back in the 2010 Western Conference Finals.
It'll be Victor Wembanyama's first playoff series in what has been a sensational third-year for the former number one overall pick. The Spurs acquired two running mates for the MVP favorite in Zion Williamson during the offseason and then acquired De'Aaron Fox, giving Wembanyama's the co-stars he needed for not only a playoff push but cementing San Antonio as one of the best teams in the league. Against the Suns this year, Wembanyama is averaging 30 points per game, 13 rebounds, three assists and four blocks on fifty-percent shooting from the field and forty-five percent from field, beating the Suns in both games.
Projected starting lineups
San Antonio Spurs: De'Aaron Fox - Devin Vassell - Stephon Castle - Zion Williamson - Victor Wembanyama
Phoenix Suns: Devin Booker - Bradley Beal - Grayson Allen - Kevin Durant - Jusuf Nurkic
Player to watch
Victor Wembanyama, San Antonio Spurs --The reigning Defensive Player of the Year is likely headed to a second straight DPOY after many felt he should have won it during his rookie year as well. With the addition of Fox and Williamson, Wembanyama took less shots this season but took more threes as his game continues to evolve, taking 200 more threes this year than he did as a rookie. With a lightened load as a ball handler and focal point of the offense, Wembanyama's focus on the defensive end has only increased since last winning the award. The Spurs lead the NBA in defensive rating by a full point and it starts with Wembanyama who leads the league in rebounding and blocks
Storyline to watch
Who slows down Durant and Booker? The Suns kept the Spurs out of the playoffs last season by beating them in the Play-In Tournament thanks to a forty-six point performance from Devin Booker and an efficient twenty-four points from Kevin Durant. This Spurs team, however, is a lot better defensively thanks to the ascension of second-year player Stephon Castle who has been inserted into the starting lineup. The Spurs improved their opponent field goal percentage from 46 percent last season to 44 percent this year, their best mark since the 2016-17 season which was the last time they were the top seed in the West. The Spurs now have multiple bodies in Castle, Devin Vassell, Tre Johnson, Lonzo Ball and Jeremy Sochan that they can mix and match on Booker and Durant.
Prediction
The veteran experience of the Suns, led by Booker, Durant and Beal, along with Grayson Allen and Jusuf Nurkic, who were part of deep playoff runs with Milwaukee and Portland respectively, make the Suns a live underdog capable of pulling off the upset. San Antonio's firepower, however, makes them tough to pick against as the Suns don't have anyone that can stop Wembanyama and if Fox and Williamson can combine for forty points on a nightly basis, the Spurs' supporting cast of Vassell, Castle, Johnson, Ball and Sochan are much better than Phoenix's Ben Simmons, Zeke Nnaji, Ryan Dunn and Josh Okogie. Pick: San Antonio 4, Phoenix 2

A series against Denver, with the potential for an awesome Wendy/Jokic battle, would’ve been more fun than the Suns IMO.
You’re gonna be able to obliterate them in the paint.

That'd be crazy but let's get to it
D Book, Beal and KD are annoying matchups in 2K though, I might have preferred the NuggetsChillcavern wrote: ↑17 May 2025, 16:10A series against Denver, with the potential for an awesome Wendy/Jokic battle, would’ve been more fun than the Suns IMO.

NBA Western Conference First Round Playoffs: April 19, 2026 - Frost Bank Arena, San Antonio, Texas
(1-0) Phoenix Suns at San Antonio Spurs (0-1)
PHX | 29 | 26 | 29 | 31 | 115
SA | 27 | 23 | 31 | 29 | 110
Starting Lineups
Devin Booker - G - De'Aaron Fox
Bradley Beal - G - Devin Vassell
Grayson Allen - F - Stephon Castle
Kevin Durant - F - Zion Williamson
Jusuf Nurkic - C - Victor Wembanyama
A pair of Zion Williamson free throws early in the fourth quarter gave the San Antonio Spurs their first lead since the first quarter, trailing for much of Game 1 in the first round of the playoffs against the Phoenix Suns. Victor Wembanyama had been in foul trouble for much of the game, missing most of the first half with three fouls. Wembanyama would extend San Antonio's lead to three points with three minutes left and Frost Bank Arena was rocking, seemingly on the verge of their first playoff win in nearly a decade.
Devin Booker had different plans, scoring eight points in the final five minutes to escape San Antonio with a 115-110 win and steal home court advantage for the eight-seeded Suns.
Wembanyama would foul out in the midst of a 12-2 run by the Phoenix Suns to take the 112-102 lead with 1:17 left in the game. San Antonio would put up a fight in the closing minute, scoring seven points in less than thirty seconds to make it 112-109 but Booker was able to seal the victory with a couple of clutch free throws, ending the night with thirty-points.
De'Aaron Fox led the Spurs with 33 points as well while Wembanyama had nineteen points and eleven rebounds with three blocks, playing the entire second half prior to fouling out.

Oh damn. That front court got dealt with. Zion really that washed? Or that's just how he functions in your offense?

Ooooooo tough loss. Zion needs to bounce back.
