Angel City Stuns Racing Louisville: Ferry’s Late Brace Ends Dynasty Chase in NWSL Semifinals

Image
It was an up & down season for Racing Louisville, including keeper Regina van Eijk, who met her own struggles this season.

Racing Louisville’s bid for an unprecedented four-peat came to a heartbreaking end on Sunday night, as Angel City FC’s Faustine Ferry struck twice in the final 10 minutes to seal a 2-1 semifinal victory at Lynn Family Stadium.

Louisville looked poised to keep its dynasty run alive, controlling much of the match and breaking through early in the second half. But in the 80th minute, Ferry pounced on a rebound to equalize, and with stoppage time looming, the American forward delivered the dagger — weaving through the Racing back line before coolly finishing the winner in the 90th minute. Louisville pushed for a dramatic response, but their last-gasp effort went wide of the post, bringing the curtain down on a historic era of dominance.

Despite the bitter ending, there were bright spots in Racing’s 2029 campaign. Erëleta Memeti cemented her place among the league’s elite, capturing the NWSL Golden Boot with 20 regular-season goals. She was flanked by a familiar partner in attack: two-time Golden Boot winner Ella Palis, who chipped in 13 goals of her own. Together, the duo formed one of the most dangerous tandems in the league and kept Racing atop the table for much of the season.

Still, the loss raises questions about the future of head coach Filipa Patão. After guiding Racing to three consecutive titles from 2026–28, her squad fell short of cementing its place as the league’s undisputed dynasty. The front office now faces a defining decision: will Patão be given the chance to bounce back in 2030, or will Racing pivot to new leadership?

With all starters expected to return and a pivotal transfer window on the horizon, Racing Louisville is far from finished. The sting of missing a four-peat will linger, but the roster remains stacked, the hunger remains alive, and the league will once again have to go through Louisville to reach the summit.

For now, though, the story belongs to Angel City — and to Faustine Ferry, whose late heroics ended one of the greatest runs the NWSL has ever seen.

You know.. This game I decided to start Jule Brand over Alisha Lehmann so you might be on to something :ooo:

That was a gut wrenching loss. I was hoping to get it done in a pk shootout if we couldn't score in OT but homegirl put the DAGGER in me with only enough time for 1 last possession :pgdead:

icl when she scored that goal I paused the game & just put my head down for a moment. Thought about restarting the match :kghah: Can't do that. We lost fair & square.

Personally I think a matchup in the finals against the Thorns would've been a hard match for us considering they were the top of the table & we were 0-2 against them in the regular season. Lost 2-1 on March 18 & lost 3-1 on September 1.

That being said, I was shocked to see Ella Palis win player of the tournament without scoring a goal.

Image

Palis struggled to score this season & it meant others had to step up & Memeti rose to the occasion. It was a fun season but a lot of pressure to keep winning the trophy. Sucks we lost but it is what it is.

I think I've got more left in the tank with Racing :letsgo:

The only thing left to accomplish is a player win the Ballon d'Or. I have to try.

SN: With Savannah DeMelo's collapse irl tonight (I was watching the game between Racing Louisville & the Seattle Reign) with the playoffs upcoming, I immediately felt like this gif from the goon:

Image

& I was able to pull off a goal with her 5 fkn minutes into the game

Image Shoutout Savannah DeMelo.

This chise made me become a DeMelo fan irl so to see what happened watching live, wishing her all the best.

Tough to see the 4-Peat die like tat. Hopefully, that lights a fire under their ass and gets them going to get another chip next season.

van Eijk better come back defending with a vengeance.
