Ottawa Senators sign star Swedish winger Nicklas Hansen

As the Ottawa Senators begin their first season into their official rebuilding period after sending the likes of Erik Karlsson, Matt Duchene, and Matt Stone away in trades in the past two years, they have added yet another youthful prospect to their ranks, pinching Swedish Hockey League star Nicklas Hansen away for a one-year, two-way contract as the 2018-19 season approaches. Hansen joins fellow young guns such as Thomas Chabot, Colin White, and Brady Tkachuk in the youth movement the Senators hope pays dividens at the end of their rebuilding process.

Hansen, 20, has played the past two seasons with Brynas IF, being awarded the Golden Puck trophy for the Ice Hockey player of the year this past season. The previous season, he was awarded the Hakan Loob Trophy as the goal-scoring leader when he led the SHL with 32 goals. Hansen was slated to participate with Brynas IF in this upcoming decision but decided to opt out of his contract to pursue NHL prospects.

"Nicklas is one of the most talented players we've seen in a while, and to have the opportunity to have him join our team - it was a no-brainer" commented General Manager Pierre Doiron, who has been under fire as of late as he has conducted what has been defined as a firesale just a few seasons after the Senators were one goal away from a Stanley Cup Finals berth. The Senators lost in double-overtime to the eventual Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh Penguins in Game Seven of the Eastern Conference Finals and haven't sniffed the playoffs since.

Despite Hansen's goal-scoring prowess, he's described more of a pass-first prospect. His game of finesse and ability to play with immense speed is expected to bring a necessary sense of offense to a Senators' squad that has been thirsting for a producer for a while. Due to his late arrival to training camp, Hansen is expected to begin the season in the American Hockey League with the Senators' farm team, the Belleville Senators.

Hansen was unable to comment himself, but a representative of his provided a comment. "Nicklas is extremely excited to further develop his game with such a high-class organization such as the Ottawa Senators. He understands how the system works, and although he is disappointed he won't get an opportunity to start with the pro club, he is excited to hit the ice with his North American teammates."

Nicklas Hansen has notably only performed in North America once, when he dressed for Team Sweden during the 2017 World Junior Championships in Montreal, Quebec. Sweden finished fourth and Hansen finished with a single goal and three assists.

The Ottawa Senators have had excellent success with Swedish-born players, with the likes of long-time team captain and franchise leader Daniel Alfredsson hailing from Gothenburg, Sweden. Their most recent captain, defenseman Erik Karlsson, won two Norris Trophies as the league's top defenseman before being traded to the San Jose Sharks last year. The Sens hope the likes of Hansen, as well as Swedish defensive prospect Erik Brannstrom undo all the tragic memories of players walking out their doors sooner rather than later.

Senators edge Comets in OT, lose Hansen in process

The Belleville Senators opened their season against Devin Setoguchi and the Utica Comets, and behind the play of star defenseman Christian Jaros and newly acquired winger Nicklas Hansen, edged them with a 3-2 overtime victory.

The victory came at a cost, as Hansen was rocked in an open-ice hit that forced him out of the game early into the overtime period. Hansen had played excellently, pacing the offense with 6 shots and many key defensive plays on the penalty kill. He assisted on the opening goal from Jaros.

Hansen was diagnosed with a lower-body injury that will have him out for approximately the next two to three weeks. An unfortunate occurrence to set things off for the Swedish Elite League superstar but the Senators expect him to come back at full force sooner rather than later.

Hansen returns as Senators sneak past Griffins

The Belleville Senators welcomed back their star Swedish import in winger Nicklas Hansen, sliding him back in a third-line role with Jim O'Brien and Chase Balisy. He did not disappoint, earning a quick assist on a goal from Darren Archibald late in the first period. Hansen played responsibly on both ends of the ice as he looked to get his feet back under him after missing the past six games with a pulled groin.

Using teammate Erik Brannstrom as a translator, Hansen commented, "I felt good out there, and it felt really good be back with the guys, being able to compete once again. I'm excited to continue to grow and develop my game." The Senators notably 5 and 1 without Hansen in the lineup as they continue their hot start to the season.

The Senators will travel to Grand Rapids in the second game of a home-and-home series before traveling to compete against the Laval Rapids on October 31st.

Hat Trick Hansen comes to life as Senators dominate Griffins

Although during his time in the Swedish Elite League with Brynas IF, Nicklas Hansen was primarily a pass-first forward, his Hakan Loob Trophy as the league's leading goal-scorer proved that he was an innate ability to put the puck in the net. Today, against the Grand Rapids Griffins, he introduced North America to his goal-scoring talent. Hansen scored back-to-back goals mid-way through the second period before scoring another goal in the third period to pick up his first professional hat-trick as the Senators picked up yet another victory.

"He's ultra-talented - his ability to create offense is superb and we're happy to have him back in the line-up" commented head coach Troy Mann on Hansen's recent performance since returning to the team after a lower-body injury made him miss six games.

The Senators will have a three-day break before traveling to Laval to face-off against the Rapids on October 31st.

Senators drop tough contest after third period collapse

The Belleville Senators received their first slice of humble pie at the hands of the Laval Rocket on the final day of October, dropping a 5-3 decision in Quebec. Forwards Matthew Peca (goal and two assists) and Dale Weise (goal and assist) led the way for the Rocket as they slowed the league leaders. This was Nicklas Hansen's first loss in the American Hockey League.

The Senators hung onto a narrow 3-2 lead in a tight contest but the Rocket rang off three goals that would be left unanswered. The Senators will look to rebound after a two-game contest against the Syracuse Crunch.

Senators rebound with Syracuse beatdown

The Senators were facing unentered territories after they were edged by the Laval Rocket in Quebec and needed to rebound against the Syracuse Crunch. They did just that with a 6-0 beatdown behind an excellent 17-save shutdown performance from goaltender Filip Gustavsson. Nicklas Hansen displayed his magic with a four-assist game as the Senators flexed their offensive muscles.

The two teams will meet up once against tomorrow night in a rematch with the Crunch looking to actually show up this time.
