Blinn QB Colby Porter Jr Announces Commitment to Oregon State
Expected to compete with Garretson and McMaryion

QB COLBY PORTER JR. RUNS FOR AN 87 YD TD FOR BLINN

Oregon State has received an official commitment from Colby Porter Jr, a three star rated dual threat quarterback from West Virginia who played at Blinn Community College in Brenem, Texas.

Porter did not receive a lot of interest coming out of high school in 2015, most schools wanted him to change positions but he was determined to remain a quarterback for as long as possible. That desire led him to Blinn where Cam Newton starred in 2009 before taking over the college football world and leading Auburn to a national championship in 2010.

PORTER WAS AN UNRANKED NO STAR PROSPECT COMING OUT OF HIGH SCHOOL

Porter played in eight games as a senior at Martinsburg High School after transferring from Charles Town High School. He threw for 1,115 yards and 17 touchdowns while running for 829 yards and six touchdowns. He led Martinsburg to the playoffs where they defeated Logan in the first round before losing a shootout to Nitro in the second round.

At Blinn Porter took over at quarterback after the team had lost their first two games and had struggled offensively. He started 7 games and led them to a 5-2 record in those games. He was injured for much of his 7th start which was a 21-28 loss against Navarro.

Porter threw for 1,155 yards and 11 touchdowns while running for 724 yards and eight scores in his season at Blinn.

“A great leader.” Blinn head coach Keith Thomas said of Porter. “One of the best I've coached. Great decision maker. He'll be successful going forward and there will be a number of schools wondering how they missed him, mark that down.”

Porter, who Blinn had listed at 5'10” and 185 pounds, is expected to compete for the starting job against Marcus McMaryion and Darell Garretson. McMaryion played in seven games last year, throwing for 403 yards with one touchdown and three interceptions. Garretson, a transfer from Utah State, sat out last season. He played in 14 games at Utah State in 2013 and 2014, throwing for 2,586 yards, 18 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.

“We love the athleticism for sure.” Co-offensive coordinator Kevin McGiven, who recruited Porter, said of his skillset. “He brings an extra dimension to the position for us.”

Porter chose Oregon State over Maryland, Auburn and Oregon, despite the fact that his father and uncle both played for the Ducks.

“Really comfortable with Coach McGiven, Coach Anderson, Coach Woods. The whole staff really. Their confidence and commitment to me as a quarterback sold me too. I'm very excited to come in here and compete.

Injury concerns are very real, I've reflected that in his injury rating! Oregon State should be interesting. Don't think I've ever played in the Pac for significant amount of time. Also first time using anything besides original rosters.

Junior college transfer quarterback Colby Porter Jr. wowed the coaching staff throughout the spring and claimed the starting job early on. Some pundits were skeptical of the “small” lefties abilities and if he could play well at this level. His debut on the road at Minnesota should quiet them at least for a little while.

Porter threw for 259 yards and a pair of scores and also ran for 102 yards and three touchdowns in a 40-25 Oregon State win.

“Big stadium. Loud. Colby never looked like it was too big of a stage. He played very well. Made some great plays. Made some even better decisions with the ball.” Head coach Gary Andersen said when asked about hi quarterback's performance.

Porter capped the Beavers first possession with a four yard touchdown pass to tight end Ricky Ortiz. Porter was pressured by the Minnesota defense on the play. He moved to his left and stood tall to deliver the pass then took his first big hit of the game. He propped himself up to see the result of the pass then jumped to his feet to join the celebration.

The teams exchanged field goals to bring to score to 10-3 at the end of the first quarter. Minnesota kicked another field goal early in the second quarter to cut the lead to 10-6. Porter then led a pair of long drives and capped each with a rushing touchdown. The first came on a quarterback sneak from a yard out and the second via a two yard run on a bootleg. Minnesota finally found the endzone before halftime on a Leidner to Smith 10 yard pass. The Beavers led 24-13 at halftime.

Midway through the third quarter Porter Jr threw his second touchdown of the game, finding Seth Collins open on a post route. Collins caught the ball in stride and sprinted into the endzone for a 41 yard score. The point after by Owens made it 31-13 Oregon State.

Minnesota cut the lead to 31-19 on a five yard Smith touchdown run early in the fourth quarter. Owens extended the lead to 34-19 with a 29 yard field goal on the next possession for the Beavers. Leidner found Wolitarsky for a 12 yard touchdown, making it 34-25 after a second failed two point attempt.

Oregon State put the game away with a long scoring drive capped by Porter Jr's third rushing touchdown of the game with just over a minute left to play. Their two point conversion attempt was successful and the final score was 42-25 Oregon State.

Porter Jr. completed 16 of 24 pass attempts for 259 yards with two touchdowns and an interception. He ran the ball 18 times, gaining a team high 102 yards and scoring three times.

“Heck of a debut I'd say.” Oregon State co-offensive coordinator Kevin McGiven said during the post game press conference. “He's an electrifying player and I think he's going to surprise a lot of folks this year and going forward.”

“Those guys up front got it done today. They made it easy for me. Guys around me making plays. It was a whole team effort really.” Porter Jr. explained after the game when asked about his impressive debut.

Porter was hurried a few times in the game but was only sacked once.

Oregon State travels to Salt Lake City to face 1-1 Utah next week.
