USF LB Hughes, safety Jake Lott will not play in bowl game; Gross, Williams still mulling draft options
Anthony Washington -- The Tampa Bay Chronicles
Two-time Nagurski, Bednarik and Butkus award winner LB Travis Hughes will not be participating in the Orange Bowl and intends to declare for the NFL Draft along with safety Jake Lott.
Hughes joins Lott as players that will skip the team's bowl game. Lott hired an agent the week after the team's win over Central Florida, formally declaring for the draft and has begun preparing for the draft.
The all-world linebacker took to social media on Tuesday night to thank fans, coaches and teammates as well as asking them to respect his decision. Hughes did clarify that he has yet to hire an agent and does plan to travel with the team.
Head coach Malcolm Francois Sr. was supportive of Hughes and Lott's decision when speaking to the media on Wednesday during the team's first week of preparation for the bowl game. Francois stated that he understood the decision and welcomes Hughes on the sideline as an "extra set of eyes".
Francois Sr. also revealed that he has spoken with draft eligible underclassmen LB Dallas Gross and QB Nick Williams on their draft prospects, calling the conversation productive.
"We have [draft] talks with everyone," said a candid Francois, "Not just the top guys but everyone. For some guys and their socioeconomic situation, being a seventh round pick is the right decision at this time. Some people can't wait twelve months, a lot can happen in twelve months so I understood it and we're empathetic. It's not just get a degree, go as high as possible. For some guys, they'll take being a sixth round pick as a junior as opposed to a fourth round pick as a senior because they might not be able to wait twelve more years, their families might not. We think about that when we speak to guys like Trav [Hughes], Dallas [Gross] and Nick [Williams]."
Williams led the country this season in passing yards while Gross is a three-time All-American and won the Nagurski, Bednarik and Butkus as a sophomore. Gross is Todd McShay's fourth ranked inside linebacker while Williams is his seventh ranked draft eligible quarterback.

South Florida Bulls Blow out Georgia Tech 63-27 in the Orange Bowl
With his teammate Travis Hughes on the sideline wearing his #55 jersey, USF linebacker Dallas Gross -- donning the number one jersey for the first time in his career -- huddle the defense up before taking on the field.
They had allowed a touchdown on the first play of the game and then struggled to slow down the Georgia Tech as they marched down the field for a field goal on their second drive.
Whatever Gross said worked...on himself as he stripped quarterback Akeem Morales off the ball before Skyler Wilson's 31 yard scope and score would turn on the faucet and begin the 63-27 rout of the Yellow Jackets.
Nick Williams threw for 420 yards and five touchdowns in what could be his final game as a Bull after impressive scouts with his arm strength, decision making and underrated athleticism that bought him some time to find his receivers down the field. Georgia Tech's secondary had no answers for Darius Downs, who found the endzone three times.
Williams broke the school record for most passing yards in a season.

USF defensive coordinator Dave Doeren officially accepts Old Dominion gig
Anthony Washington -- The Tampa Bay Chronicles
Old Dominion has officially announced former USF defensive coordinator Dave Doeren as the program's next head coach.
Doeren interviewed for several other jobs, including the opening at Florida State that former Old Dominion head coach James Franklin was hired for. Doeren had been reported as landing the Old Dominion job but it was not announced due to his wishes to wait until after the bowl game.
The former NC State head coach spent three years at USF as the team's defensive coordinator, bringing his 3-3-5 defense to Tampa where star linebackers Dallas Gross and Travis Hughes had tremendous success, earning first team All-American honors all three seasons.
Names to watch as Doeren's replacement includes former USF defensive coordinator Manny Diaz, who was fired from Cincinnati as head coach following a 2-10 season. USF could also choose to keep the N.C. State pipeline going with recently fired Wolfpack head coach Will Muschamp. Both Diaz and Muschamp have ties to the state of Florida and are considered elite defensive coordinators.

Manny Diaz returns to USF as defensive coordinator following Doeren's departure
Cooper Byrd -- Dynasty Sports Staff Writer
Within seconds of former USF defensive coordinator Dave Doeren telling head coach Malcolm Francois that he was taking the head coaching job at Old Dominion, Francois texted Manny Diaz.
"He was my guy," said Francois during Diaz's introductory press conference as the Bulls new defensive coordinator, once more.
Diaz was the team's defensive coordinator for just one season back in 2021 but in that one season, he developed a strong bond with Francois Sr. with their friendship lasting through Diaz's departure to be the head coach at Cincinnati. They kept in touch and when Diaz was fired at Cincinnati and Doeren decided to leave, it was an easy decision and a quick phone call that brought the band back together.
The Bearcats had the worst scoring and passing defense in the American last season but Francois and USF are banking on a lack of talent rather than Diaz's woes as a coordinator. The team enjoyed great success on defense under Diaz, running his base nickel defense.
He'll have his work cut out for him as the Bulls are losing a ton of talent on defense to the draft.

Hughes, Gross, Lott and Williams all declare early for draft
Cooper Byrd -- Dynasty Sports Staff Writer
For the fourth straight season, USF will have a new starting quarterback.
Redshirt sophomore Nick Williams is the latest underclassmen from the University of South Florida to declare for the draft, doing so after his lone season as the Bulls starter. It didn't take Williams long to rewrite the Bulls record books, breaking the single season record for both passing yards and touchdowns.
He joins safety Jake Lott and linebackers Dallas Gross and Travis Hughes as underclassmen that will be forgoing their final year of eligibility for the draft with Williams having two years of eligibility left as a redshirt sophomore. It matches last year's total of four early departures but the Bulls are also losing two freshman in defensive end Mike Atkins and receiver Bradley Wilkinson who neither played much this season with Wilkinson redshirting.
Atkins is transferring to University of Alabama - Birmingham while Wilkinson will be attending the University of South Alabama next season.

Francois, USF try to fix offensive line woes in the transfer portal
Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports USF Insider
After not having much luck on the high school scene, the University of South Florida seems to have found its stride in the college ranks.
Former four-star recruit and Georgia offensive tackle James King has transferred to USF along with Florida natives defensive end B.J. Patton out of the University of Minnesota and offensive tackle Andrew Smart out of UAB.
Patton and Smart are both from south Florida with Patton being from Kendall and Smart hailing out of Boca Grande. All three freshman redshirted last season and will have to sit out this season due to transfer rules but give the Bulls some much deeded boost along its offensive and defensive line.
The additions help boost the Bulls 2026 recruiting class, although it won't be reflected in the rankings. They're currently ranked eight in the country and can now focus on landing five-star linebacker Marcus Rhoden and their other top targets instead of trying to salvage their offensive line recruiting with a late offer and push.
USF will be waiting on NLIs from four different players: Rhoden, four-star corner Casey Coe, four-star athlete Lamar Mitchell, three-star tight end Jean-Jacques Francois and recently offered four-star running back Avery Wilson.
Wilson is an IMG kid originally from Cottonwood West, Utah. The interest from the Bulls have been described as 'warm' due to Wilson's academic struggles which could result in him being ineligible.

Bulls land Rhode, Francois and top SEC class on National Signing Day
Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports USF Insider
Even with the University of Florida getting a 'win' over the South Florida Bulls, it was USF that won the war and starts their tenure in the SEC with the top recruiting class in the conference.
The Bulls received a NLI from five-star linebacker Marcus Rhoden and three-star tight end Jean-Jacques Francois, salvaging their day after losing cornerback Casey Coe to the Florida Gators early in the morning.
Four-star athlete Lamar Mitchell and running back Avery Wilson also committed elsewhere with Mitchell staying north with Wisconsin and Wilson signing with N.C. State.
The Bulls top target all cycle, Rhoden is a potential day-one starter and fits well in Manny Diaz's defense which asks less of their linebackers than Dave Doeren's 3-3-5 front who could have the Mike linebacker drop deep in coverage, blitz, play man coverage and take on lead blockers all within the same drive. He compares favorably with Dallas Gross, with the edge in testing numbers with a faster 40-time. Montrell Jennings is another comparison due to their height and build and similar playing style of 'run and hit'.
While Rhoden is plug and play, Francois may require some more seasoning. The youngest son of head coach Malcolm Francois, Francois joins his two older brothers Malcolm Jr. and Pierre at USF and will have to make the transition from high school quarterback to tight end, a position the Bulls are loaded at right now. Francois, similar to his brothers, is a track star and has the fastest verified 40-time among tight ends.
