Divisional Playoffs: Los Angeles Chargers at New England Patriots Preview

The New England Patriots earned their tenth consecutive first-round playoff bye after finishing with an 14-2 record and the 2019 AFC East title to earn the first seed in the AFC Playoff field. On Saturday, they'll be seeing a familiar foe in the Los Angeles Chargers and quarterback Philip Rivers.

Sony Michel ran for 129 yards and had three touchdowns and the New England Patriots beat the Los Angeles Chargers 41-28 in the divisional playoffs last season to earn their eighth straight trip to the AFC championship game.

Quarterback Philip Rivers finished 25 of 51 for 331 yards, three touchdowns and an interception. He is 0-5 in games played in Foxborough, including 0-3 in the postseason. Brady finished 34 of 44 for 343 yards and a touchdown. He improved to 8-0 as a starter against Rivers, who drops to 1-8 against New England all-time.

Given both quarterbacks age, this could be their final match-up in what has been a one-sided rivalry. While Rivers didn't put up Brady's MVP-like numbers this season, Rivers threw for 4,409 yards, 36 touchdowns and just nine interceptions. Rivers was phenomenal in the overtime win over the Tennessee Titans last week, throwing five touchdowns including the game winner to tight end Hunter Henry.

Rivers will be without receiver Mike Williams who missed the last two games with a dislocated elbow. Travis Benjamin has filled in the role of the second receiver with nine catches for 83 yards and a touchdown last week against Tennessee.

Despite the Williams injury, New England's defense will have its work cut out with a talented receiving corps that consists of Keenan Allen, the speed of Travis Benjamin and the size of Dontrelle Inman along with tight end Hunter Henry.

The Chargers defense are also in for a long day if talented pass rushers Melvin Ingram and Joey Bosa can't get to Brady. They are starting a rookie in linebacker Drue Tranquill due to injuries to Denzel Perryman, Thomas Davis and Kendall Beckwith and a second-year player in Rayshawn Jenkins as Derwin James has been on IR all season long.

Their defense is ranked 16th in scoring defense, 11th in rushing defense, 18th in passing defense and 16th in total defense.

Edelman caught three passes, all for touchdowns and the New England Patriots beat the Los Angeles Chargers 31-7 in the divisional playoffs on Saturday to earn their ninth straight trip to the AFC championship game.

New England (15-2) will play at Kansas City in next week's AFC title game. The Patriots beat the Chiefs 36-10 in Foxborough in Week 14. The Patriots finished 8-1 at home this season.

It is the 14th conference championship game appearance by the Patriots during the Tom Brady-Bill Belichick era.

"It's going to be a good game," Brady said of the rematch with the Chiefs. "They're a good team. We played them earlier this year and last year, a few times. It's exciting, you always get up for any game but especially playoff games against great teams like Kansas City, they have a really good football team and a good coach and a good quarterback so looking forward to it."

The Chargers (13-5) haven't reached the AFC title game since the 2007 season.

Quarterback Philip Rivers finished 28 of 34 for 303 yards with a touchdown and an interception. He is 0-6 in games played in Foxborough, including 0-4 in the postseason.

New England forced five turnovers on defense and special teams with the unit scoring the same number of points as the Chargers offense.
