USF's undefeated tour moves through Columbia 42-14
For two and a half quarters, the Missouri Tigers gave the undefeated South Florida Bulls all they could handle.
And then Jarod Green showed up.
Green caught eleven passes for 143 yards and two touchdowns in the second half alone to easily take care of the the Tigers 42-14 on Saturday and clinched top four finish in the Champions Division which would earn them a birth to the College Football Playoffs
The Bulls can now finish no worse than third in the Champions Division ranking and their matchup next week against Penn State will determine the East Region champion.
Two interceptions from Jared Chavis kept the Tigers in the game, including one in the redzone in the third quarter when the Bulls had a chance to go up three touchdowns but Chavis was intercepted near the goal-line which led to a Missouri touchdown with 5:23 remaining in the game to make it a one score game.
The Tigers would never cross the 50-yard line again while the Bulls would go on to score three more times, including a pick six from Julius Hughes. USF's two defensive touchdowns matched Missouri's scoring total on offense

Run of the Bulls ‣ USF Football News
Andrew Lake -- 247 Sports Staff Writer
‣ USF head coach Malcolm Francois Sr. compares Penn State's Bryan Myers to USF's Jared Chavis
With 42 passing touchdowns to just one interception, Penn State quarterback Bryan Myers is the run away favorite to win the Heisman Trophy in December. USF's defense will need to find a way to seemingly do the impossible and slow Myers done but it's not something that's stressing out USF head coach Malcolm Francois Sr.
"He's put up some really good numbers and does a good job of executing their offense," Francois Sr. said of Myers on Wednesday, "But from a talent standpoint, our defense faces a similar quarterback in [Jared Chavis], they're strong, physical runner that go a good job of getting the ball out on time and making plays on the perimeter. I don't think they'll be shell shocked by anything on Saturday, he's a good college quarterback but they're more of a cohesive unit than anything."
Penn State's offense is ranked first in scoring and total offense with their passing offense coming in second behind only UCF's offense which the Bulls will need to face on Senior Night in the regular season finale.
‣ USF sophomore quarterback Charlie Cooke won't travel with the team
Second-year quarterback Charlie Cooke is taking an excused leave of absence from the team according to Francois Sr. and won't travel with the team to Pennsylvania on Friday night after Cooke was not at practice this week.
It's unclear what the cause of the absence was but given that Cooke has thrown three interceptions on nine pass attempts this season after losing the quarterback competition to Chavis, it's fair to wonder if the former five-star is taking the time to reconsider his options.
Even when he's been on the field, the six-foot-two, 229 pound pocket passer hasn't been an ideal fit in first-year OC Peter Nicholson's offense. While it might be too early for portal talk, there would surely be plenty of suitors for Cooke if he chose to go that route.
‣ USF DC Trai Martinez generating some head coach buzz
Martinez' job with the defense during his first season has been a work of art, taking a unit that lost a ton of talent to the draft and graduation and molding them into a legitimate top fifteen defense that will have their biggest test on Saturday.
With a showcase on primetime, Martinez could be be beginning his audition for another head coaching opportunity as USF will likely also play in the College Football Playoffs. If USF's defense shines through those games, a plethora of teams could come calling although coordinators that leave USF don't have the greatest track records as head coaches. Most recently, Gary Prince is 3-8 at West Virginia and Jeremy Butler is 2-8 this season with Charlotte.

Myers' Heisman campaign hits speed bump as Bulls stroll into Happy Valley and ram the Nittany Lions
USF head coach Malcolm Francois Sr. made headlines earlier this week when he suggested that USF's defense would be ready to face Heisman favorite and Penn State quarterback Bryan Myers because they face a quarterback of similar talent in their own quarterback, Jared Chavis.
While some analysts and experts ridiculed the statement at the time, it might have been for the wrong reasons as Chavis thoroughly outplayed Myers, as did the Bulls to the tune of a 45-7 blowout in a game that was never competitive.
Myers completed seventy percent of his passes but threw two interceptions, doubling his total on the season entering the game. He did most of his damage on the ground with 88 rushing yards but USF's bent but don't break approach ultimately won as Penn State converted just thirty percent of their third downs.
USF converted 60 percent of theirs and converted as many third and fourth down conversions (7) as the Nittany Lions scored points. Chavis had a goal line interception but was nearly perfect otherwise, throwing for 413 yards with three scores.
He found Jarod Green early and often to the tune of ten receptions for 167 yards and then found D.J. Manning later in the game to help put it away. Manning finished with seven receptions for 143 yards and a 22-yard touchdown in the third quarter.

Weisbecker commits to Ole Miss despite late push from Bulls
Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports USF Insider
Joe Weisbecker, the number four ranked guard in this recruiting cycle according to 247 Sports, has committed to the University of Mississippi over USF, Rutgers, Georgia Tech, Oregon and others.
Weisbecker had been a Ole Miss lean for a while but the Bulls were able to get him on campus for an unofficial visit the day before he was set to release a top two a few weeks ago and the top two list never came out as it presumably would have not included USF.
The Bulls striking out on Weisbecker is aided by the fact that they already have two blue chip offensive linemen in Ray Anderson and Steve Bailey albeit Weisbecker would have been their highest ranked recruit.

Midshipmen pull out a rare and surprising win over Bulls for elite tight end Johnson
Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports USF Insider
IMG Academy tight end and South Carolina native Jermaine Johnson committed to the Naval Academy in a surprise announcement that leaves USF's potential number one recruiting class reeling a little bit.
Johnson had been trending towards USF ever since his official visit last month but Navy was able to get him on campus and former USF offensive coordinator Malcolm Francois Jr, now at Navy as OC, was able to work his magic and land Johnson who is the 5th ranked tight end in the country and the third highest ranked players in Navy's recruiting class which might be able to land a top five class.
The Bulls now sit 4th in the recruiting rankings behind Minnesota, USC and Oklahoma with more question marks on their board than answers despite the success on the field. They've been chipping away at another tight end in Jeff Rutledge as they had looked to retool that room but the Crystal Balls remain in Miami's favor, the hometown school. They're also trailing Ole Miss, and potentially Georgia Tech, for an elite tackle in Texas' Garrett McTaggart. They're in pretty good standing with IMG linebacker Talanoa Langi but after Johnson's surprise commitment, nothing is official until it is.
USF did extend scholarships to two more high school seniors as perhaps late adds to the board in Georgia quarterback Joey Zeigler and Alabama receiver Tracy Brooks. Zeigler is the son of former Georgia offensive coordinator Bryan Zeigler who is currently the OC at Syracuse. While he's garnered interest from several top schools such as Navy, Miami and Michigan State, USF is his first scholarship offer as is the case for Brooks although many expect Zeigler to walk-on at Syracuse or wherever his father lands after this coaching hiring cycle.

Recruiting Class in Review: Greatest class of all time? Bulls 2035 cycle makes a strong argument with heavy hitters all around
Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports USF Insider
After striking out for some top dogs in the previous recruiting cycle, the Bulls came out with a vengeance in 2035 on the recruiting trail, landing not only the best recruiting class in the country that year but perhaps one of the better ones of all time. The context is also important as USF managed to land this class while mired in controversy around the program regarding an alleged toxic culture within the football program that put head coach Malcolm Francois Sr's future in jeopardy.
When it was all said and done, how does this class grade out? The grading criteria is as follows: 1 star for non-contributor, 2 star for depth player, 3 star for contributor, 4 star for impact starter, 5 star for a star player.
2035 USF Bulls Recruiting Class
HB/WR Derek Young [ATH #1]: 6'0", 217lbs | Washington, IA [IMG] | 5-star | 4.32 40-yd dash, 330 Bench Press Max, 315 Squat Max
Career Stats » 147 carries, 1195 yards, 10 touchdowns, 200 receptions, 3027 yards, 29 touchdowns
Analysis » Perhaps the most versatile player in USF history, Young became the first Bull to rush for over 1,000 yards and catch for over 1,000 yards in the same season after making the transition from a full-time receiver to a gadget player as a junior. What's even more impressive is that even as a full time receiver, Young was probably one of the more versatile ones as well given that he played all three positions (X,Y, and Z) and had success at all three when asked to play them.
Grade » 5-star
QB Joey Spence [QB #1]: 6'4", 220lbs | St. Johns, AZ | 5-star | 4.86 40-yd dash, 310 Bench Press Max, 255 Squat Max
Career Stats » 800 of 1121, 11196 yards, 123 touchdowns, 34 interceptions, sacked 31 times, 119 carries, 53 yards, touchdown, 4 fumbles
Analysis » Showed flashes as a true freshman, took over the job as a sophomore following the departure of the most prolific passer in school history and somehow managed to not drop a beat, averaging over fifty touchdowns per season. It'll be tough arguing against Jed White who has a Heisman and Jones who has all of the records but Spence is firmly in the top three in terms of greatest quarterbacks at USF
Grade » 5-star
WR Jarod Green [WR #2]: 5'11", 183lbs | Missouri City, TX | 5-star | 4.38 40-yd dash, 240 Bench Press Max, 240 Squat Max
Career Stats » 145 receptions, 2118 yards, 15 touchdowns
Analysis » After nearly transferring following his freshman season and even briefly entering the portal, Green had turned himself into a decent role player with at least 230 receiving yards his first two seasons becoming a solid slot option last year with 41 catches but this year, he's been USF's best player with 1,023 receiving yards and seven touchdowns, earning him that fifth star.
Grade » 5-star
WR Jason McDowell [WR #4]: 6'5", 220lbs | Charlotte, MI | 5-star | 4.36 40-yd dash, 270 Bench Press Max, 195 Squat Max
Career Stats » 144 receptions, 2538 yards, 31 touchdowns
Analysis » An instant impact player, McDowell was USF's best deep threat since perhaps the days of Corey Montgomery and maybe even William Sapp. He was the perfect fit for an offense that was littered with talent that could work the middle and the seams with McDowell going over the top early and often
Grade » 5-star
S Mark Robinson [ATH #13]: 6'3", 185lbs | Union City, NJ | 5-star | 4.36 40-yd dash, 270 Bench Press Max, 260 Squat Max
Career Stats » 174 tackles, 15 tackles for loss, 9 interceptions, 9 pass breakups
Analysis » The counting numbers never matched his freshman season where he had six interceptions but a three-time All-American, Robinson was always Mr. Reliable for USF as a three-year starter
Grade » 5-star
T Adam Clemons [T #1]: 6'2", 307lbs | West Palm Beach, FL | 5-star | 4.92 40-yd dash, 440 Bench Press Max, 640 Squat Max
Career Stats » 6 pancakes, 10 sacks allowed
Analysis » The forgotten man of this class, Clemons struggled to get onto the field early as the team wasn't sure if he was really an offensive tackle, moving him inside early on before he moved back outside this spring and competed for the right tackle starting job which he won. He's been a solid addition for the running game but his 10 sacks allowed is the most on the team so tough to say he's been a success so far. He does have one year of eligibility left so we'll see what happens with a move back to guard likely for him.
Grade » 3-star
G Chris Booker [G #1]: 6'1", 320lbs | Muscle Shoals, AL | 5-star | 4.90 40-yd dash, 490 Bench Press Max, 620 Squat Max
Career Stats » 20 pancakes, 10 sacks allowed
Analysis » A steady player, Booker is a four-year starter along the offensive line which is impressive by itself. He's far from a dominant player but he's a reliable pass blocker who has helped pave the way for some prolific offenses.
Grade » 5-star
S Wesley Adams [S #1]: 6'5", 212lbs | Mt. Gay-Shamrock, WV [IMG] | 4-star | 4.32 40-yd dash, 420 Bench Press Max, 370 Squat Max
Career Stats » 273 tackles, 51 tackles for loss, 7 sacks, 9 interceptions, 2 touchdowns, 13 pass breakups, forced fumble
Analysis » Evaluators don't always get it right but how did anyone look at Adams' stature, athletic profile and high school tape, especially pre-IMG, and decided that he wasn't a five-star? Nevertheless, Adams was a three-year starter and became one of the rare sophomores to wear the coveted No. 2 jersey which is awarded to the team's top defensive back
Grade » 5-star
CB Kenny Fowler [CB #1]: 6'0", 166lbs | Cherry Hill, NJ | 4-star | 4.32 40-yd dash, 325 Bench Press Max, 285 Squat Max
Career Stats » 156 tackles, 29 tackles for loss, 5 sacks, 12 interceptions, 6 touchdowns, 10 pass breakups
Analysis » In almost any other class, Fowler would be far and away the best player in his class as the former Bednarik and Thorpe Award winner was a menace for offenses out of the nickel spot with his ability to be tough against the run, blitz the quarterback and get his hands on the ball with him more than likely scoring.
Grade » 5-star
DE Travis Peters [DE #2]: 6'2", 228lbs | Miami, FL | 4-star | 4.64 40-yd dash, 345 Bench Press Max, 640 Squat Max
Career Stats » 57 tackles, 33 tackles for loss, 25 sacks
Analysis » Another play that gets overshadowed a bit, Peters was a consistent pass rusher for the Bulls who led the team in sacks as a junior and was a key piece of some very good defenses.
Grade » 5-star
DT Michael Williams [DT #3]: 6'6", 280lbs | El Paso, TX | 4-star | 5.18 40-yd dash, 460 Bench Press Max, 580 Squat Max
Career Stats » 27 tackles, 11 tackles for loss, 5 sacks
Analysis » He was stuck behind some very good players in Ron Cox, Pete Ford, Dallas Thomas, Matt Bush and Russ Bailey but when finally given his chance this season, Williams has been USF's best interior pass rusher with 8 tackles for loss and five sacks to earn him that fourth star
Grade » 4-star
G Ed McKinney [G #5]: 6'2", 321lbs | Baker, LA | 4-star | 4.70 40-yd dash, 440 Bench Press Max, 605 Squat Max
Career Stats » 44 pancakes, 10 sacks allowed
Analysis » An instant starter as a true freshman, you can argue that McKinney has been the better of the two guards between him and Booker who could be in line for some All-American consideration this season
Grade » 4-star
WR Sam Washington [WR #25]: 6'0", 172lbs | Tampa, FL | 4-star | 4.42 40-yd dash, 280 Bench Press Max, 215 Squat Max
Career Stats » 96 receptions, 1326 yards, 8 touchdowns
Analysis » Washington was never the guy but even as he flashed as a true freshman, he always just found ways to make plays as USF's third or fourth receiving option when he was on the field. For him to finish with nearly 100 receptions in three seasons despite never being a full-time starter is also impressive
Grade » 4-star
HB Dionte McCarthy [WR #26]: 6'0", 211lbs | Lakeland, FL | 4-star | 4.32 40-yd dash, 245 Bench Press Max, 325 Squat Max
Career Stats » 330 carries, 2035 yards, 21 touchdowns, 4 fumbles, 68 receptions, 553 yards, 2 touchdowns
Analysis » Injuries make this a tough one as McCarthy looked like a potential future star as a freshman after making the switch to running back but then was stuck behind some good running backs before getting the keys this season, only to miss games with injuries. His 76.9 rushing yards per game this season still earns him that fourth star as he does make an impact whenever he's on the field.
Grade » 4-star
K Mike Pleasant [K #1]: 5'10", 181lbs | Mena, AR | 4-star | 4.96 40-yd dash, 240 Bench Press Max, 325 Squat Max
Career Stats » 27 of 43, 100% XP, 49 FG Lng
Analysis » An incredibly inconsistent kicker, there's not a kick that Pleasant can't make and not a kick that he's not capable of missing somehow.
Grade » 3-star
OLB/ILB Brian Robinson [OLB #17]: 6'2", 223lbs | Tampa, FL | 4-star | 4.54 40-yd dash, 430 Bench Press Max, 640 Squat Max
Career Stats » 161 tackles, 28 tackles for loss, 7 sacks, 3 interceptions, 2 touchdowns, 4 pass breakups, 5 forced fumbles, fumble recovery
Analysis » Finds like these is what makes USF's coaching staff so special over the years as they found Robinson, developed him for years behind the likes of Josh Anderson, Chris Williams and Nick Robinson and then unleashed him as a junior and senior to the tune of a likely Butkus Award come December as college football's best linebacker
Grade » 5-star
TE Jason White [TE #35]: 6'4", 251lbs | Prien, LA | 3-star | 4.70 40-yd dash, 285 Bench Press Max, 260 Squat Max
Career Stats » 2 receptions, 9 yards, 2 pancakes
Analysis » They're not all winners and White's addition to the class was a throw in one that's turned out to not even be worth the take
Grade » 1-star
QB Jared Chavis [QB #46]: 6'3", 191lbs | Dallas, TX | 3-star | 4.82 40-yd dash, 250 Bench Press Max, 265 Squat Max
Career Stats » 291 of 398, 3569 yards, 29 touchdowns, 15 interceptions, 97 carries, 347 yards, 3 touchdowns, 7 fumbles
Analysis » The interceptions have been frustrating but for a three-star that many didn't even expect o play, Chavis has been a pleasant surprise, averaging 322 passing yards and 31 rushing yards per game with 32 total touchdowns. He's turned himself into a legitimate NFL prospect that could have the NFL calling some spring.
Grade » 4-star
OLB Nicholas Holt [OLB #105]: 6'4", 238lbs | Oviedo, FL | 3-star | 4.76 40-yd dash, 315 Bench Press Max, 545 Squat Max
Career Stats » 11 tackles
Analysis » Some thought he would have an impact this season as he was the most natural fit, athletic profile wise, to be one of USF's 3-4 outside linebacker but even with that, Holt failed to crack the rotation
Grade » 1-star
P Stanley Durbin [P #11]: 6'0", 220lbs | Orlando, FL | 3-star | 5.04 40-yd dash, 225 Bench Press Max, 280 Squat Max
Career Stats » 97 punts, 4050 yards, 36.7 Net Avg, 72 longest punt, 27 downed inside the 10, 10 touchbacks
Analysis » He's not been used a ton over the years but when needed, Durbin has delivered some clutch punts
Grade » 4-star
Superlative Awards
Most Important Signing: The obvious answers might be Joey Spence or Derek Young, who was the top ranked player in all of high school football that season. A sneaky good answer might actually be Chris Booker and/or Travis Peters who USF landed on National Signing Day after struggling on NSD the previous cycle. Not only did the Bulls land two high end talents, they landed them away from hometown programs Alabama and Miami respectively which they've helped USF beat over the years.
Most Productive Signing: This is a tough, tough one but Young narrowly beats out Spence due to Spence not being a starter as a true freshman. Wesley Adams is also in consideration here.
Biggest Bust of the Class: It almost has to be Clemons as he's the only blue chip recruit who didn't become an impact player although that could change next season
Most Untapped Potential: This is due to injuries but there's no reason why McCarthy couldn't have been a legitimate college football star as his game and skills are very similar to Derek Young.
Biggest Steal of the Class: It's definitely Chavis as whenever you can get a three-star quarterback to potentially lead you to the playoffs, that was a steal.
Biggest Lost of the Class: The only swing and miss in the class was Alabama's Willie Farris with the highly ranked linebacker committing to Michigan State. After redshirting, Farris spent two seasons on the bench before becoming a starter this year. In his career, he has 76 tackles, 19 tackles for loss and 5.5 sacks.
