playing like that against Akron isn't a good sign of things to come
The only positive is I was trying new plqys and that hurt us. I expect the offense to improve with my original play book.

Week 2: Surviving the Hurricane

Hello and welcome to the morning Roast Gopher blog, a place to write about all things related to the Minnesota Golden Gophers. The quick notes, recruits, who to hate watch this week and anything else Golden Gopher related.
  • Redshirts were announced this week; LT Nick Cantrell, LG Jamal Cheridor, RT Joel Eboigbe, SS Demarco Russ, K Chad Fowler, P Jackie Tyree were all handed redshirts. A few surprises not on the list include WR Russ Bowe and MIKE Jamerson Nall. Coach Smith addressed both players during his Wednesday press conference. "Bowe is a speedy player and in an area we lack depth. He might not see as much action in the receiver position but he will be a big part of our special teams and our 5 wide packages. Nall was one we really thought about. We are thin at linebacker and he has the ability to play all three positions. He will see plenty of time across the board."
  • Week 1 saw freshman Mitch Horan stand out on the defense with his three tackles for a loss and his big third down sack. Horan was subbed out more than the other linebackers, especially when in coverage situations. Expect that to change, this week Horan was added to more packages and should see an increase in snaps.
  • Dylan Wittke struggled against Akron, the starting position is his, but he will be the first to know how quick coach Smith is at pulling a struggling QB. It was week 4 last year that Wittke started seeing time and week 6 he was named the starter. AJ Brand came in against Akron and looked better than Wittke on his only drive. "Both are talented and both offer something different. AJ was added to a few new packages this week, using his scrambling ability and his quick passing. Expect to see them both against Miami."
  • Fame Ijeboi impressed with limited action at running back in week 1. He has moved himself ahead of Xavier Ford and Gant Washington for the second string spot behind AJ Turner. Ijeboi is expected to receive more snaps this week to give Turner more rest to stay fresh for the fourth quarter.
  • Miami will be Mick Smith's 8th game in his first 16 against a top 25 team. Smith is 3-4 against the top 25 and 7-1 against non-top 25 teams.

A W is a W, that's the motto for this season.
