Recruiting Class in Review: A couple of legacy prospects lead the way for the Bulls 2037 class
Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports USF Insider
With a limited number of scholarships available while on probation, USF was able to go whale hunting in the 2037 cycle, landing three five-stars in a class with nine scholarship signings and two walk-ons. The class would help contribute to back to back championship seasons but also played a huge role in USF's lack of success in 2039 with their first losing season in two decades.
When it was all said and done, how does this class grade out? The grading criteria is as follows: 1 star for non-contributor, 2 star for depth player, 3 star for contributor, 4 star for impact starter, 5 star for a star player.
2037 USF Recruiting Class
WR/HB William Sapp [HB #4]: 5'11", 191lbs | Riviera Beach, FL | 5-star | 4.36 40-yd dash, 380 Bench Press Max, 295 Squat Max (EE)
Career Stats » 267 carries, 1263 yards, 12 touchdowns, 85 receptions, 1019 yards, 5 touchdowns
Analysis » Even at the time, the five-star ranking seemed a bit much for Sapp who was much more of a track star than a football player. After two decent seasons in the backfield where he averaged around 40 rushing yards per game, Sapp made the move to his father's position, receiver, where he's averaging 21.7 yards per reception this season and averaging nearly sixty yards per game with an outside shot at topping 1,000-yards as a senior.
Grade » 4-star
HB Eric Valentine [HB #5]: 5'9", 198lbs | Leland, MS | 5-star | 4.52 40-yd dash, 410 Bench Press Max, 350 Squat Max (EE)
Career Stats » 215 carries, 948 yards, 33 touchdowns, 49 receptions, 347 yards, touchdown
Analysis » With 33 career touchdowns, Valentine has certainly been effective in his limited role, averaging 4.4 yards per carry as mainly a short-yardage back. That's not exactly what you expect to get in terms of production when you land a five-star running back as Valentine in his career is averaging just 19.3 rushing yards per game.
Grade » 3-star
QB Charlie Cooke [QB #1]: 6'2", 228lbs | Monroeville, AL | 5-star | 5.04 40-yd dash, 265 Bench Press Max, 260 Squat Max
Career Stats » 40 of 65, 450 yards, 5 touchdowns, 5 interceptions, 18 carries, 70 yards at USF | 394 of 621, 5297 yards, 54 touchdowns, 22 interceptions, 333 carries, 1098 yards, 14 touchdowns at UCF
Analysis » The stage was set for Cooke to follow the footsteps of those before him in Jeff Jones and Joey Spence as he came in as a true freshman and stared in relief of Spence to beat Texas. Cooke would lose out the starting quarterback competition the next fall to Jared Chavis and never recovered as Chavis would go on to lead the Bulls to a national championship. Cooke would transfer to UCF where he's been a very good quarterback for the Knights.
Grade » 1-star
CB Julius Hughes [CB #2]: 5'11", 171lbs | Piedmont, AL | 4-star | 4.38 40-yd dash, 245 Bench Press Max, 260 Squat Max (EE)
Career Stats » 107 tackles, 12 tackles for loss, sack, 6 interceptions, touchdown, 8 PBU, FF, 2 FR
Analysis » An instant impact player as a true freshman, Hughes didn't waste any time getting into the rotation at corner and eventually developed into one of USF's top defensive players before declaring for the draft as a junior last season.
Grade » 4-star
T Kyle Everett [T #3]: 6'4", 304lbs | Jacksonville, FL | 4-star | 4.82 40-yd dash, 465 Bench Press Max, 630 Squat Max
Career Stats » 23 pancakes, 12 sacks allowed
Analysis » Everett accomplished the rare feat of starting as a true freshman at left tackle despite not being an early enrollee. He's manned that spot since through some ups and downs but overall, a very solid player for the Bulls throughout his career and now their best offensive linemen for the past two seasons.
Grade » 4-star
S Joey Bailey [S #5]: 6'1", 184lbs | Tampa, FL | 4-star | 4.60 40-yd dash, 410 Bench Press Max, 350 Squat Max (EE)
Career Stats » 109 tackles, 25 tackles for loss, 3 sacks, 3 interceptions, 4 PBU, 2 FF, FR
Analysis » Even though he came in as a four-star prospect and the son of a former USF player, Bailey was a bit underestimated as a recruit as many saw him as a limited athlete that perhaps didn't have the physical attributes to be an every down player for USF. By his junior season, Bailey was a full-time starter and one of the better players on the team, eventually declaring as a junior for the draft. For a team that prioritizes speed, Bailey is one of the few examples of a player breaking that mold of a prospect on the backend.
Grade » 4-star
DE Cory Smith [DE #10]: 6'1", 240lbs | Miami, FL | 4-star | 4.68 40-yd dash, 425 Bench Press Max, 605 Squat Max (EE)
Career Stats » 66 tackles, 34 tackles for loss, 17 sacks
Analysis » Another prospect whose physical attributes were limited and many projected a small, niche role for Smith at the next level. Instead, Smith has consistently been one of USF's best options at defensive end, recording three straight seasons of at least four sacks and had sixteen tackles for last season.
Grade » 3-star
DT Will Webb [DT #15]: 6'5", 292lbs | Hyattsville, MD | 4-star | 5.22 40-yd dash, 410 Bench Press Max, 520 Squat Max
Career Stats » 1 tackle
Analysis » They're not all hits and Webb certainly isn't one of them. Even at the time, his high ranking was more based on potential and body type which he never lived up to.
Grade » 1-star
S Joel McDonald [CB #72]: 5'11", 182lbs | Tolleson, AZ | 3-star | 4.46 40-yd dash, 265 Bench Press Max, 225 Squat Max (preferred walk-on)
Career Stats » 5 tackles, tackle for loss, fumble recovery, touchdown
Analysis » A preferred walk-on, McDonald made the move to safety as a freshman and will compete at that position next year as a redshirt senior.
Grade » 2-star
S Fred Rankin [CB #77]: 5'11", 186lbs | Maywood, IL | 3-star | 4.56 40-yd dash, 190 Bench Press Max, 235 Squat Max
Career Stats » 4 tackles, interception, pass breakup
Analysis » Similar to McDonald, Rankin made the move to safety where he's been a career backup. If Michael Robinson declares for the draft as expected, he could be the team's next starter at free safety.
Grade » 2-star
DT Matt Langford [DT #81]: 6'6", 281lbs | Sandy Springs, GA | 3-star | 5.26 40-yd dash, 455 Bench Press Max, 570 Squat Max (preferred walk-on)
Career Stats » 11 tackles, 4 tackles for loss, 4 sacks
Analysis » Another former walk-on, Langford has probably played more than many expected, really out of desperation back in 2038 and 2039 but now that the defensive tackle room is looking like its supposed to, he's fallen out of the rotation.
Grade » 2-star
S/CB Cody Fuller [CB #89]: 6'4", 187lbs | Allentown, PA | 3-star | 4.52 40-yd dash, 335 Bench Press Max, 235 Squat Max
Career Stats » 118 tackles, 14 tackles for loss, 3 interceptions, touchdown, 2 pass deflections, forced fumble
Analysis » A gem of a find by the recruiting staff, Fuller had the physical tools to be a potential player at the next level and developed into that, initially as a dime corner as a true freshman and now as a senior, made the move to safety where he might get some All-American considerations.
Grade » 4-star
Superlative Awards
Most Important Signing: At the time, it was certainly Cooke as beating out Alabama and UCF -- two rivals -- was a big deal.
Most Productive Signing: It's a toss up between Kyle Everett and Julius Hughes with Hughes getting the slight edge.
Biggest Bust of the Class: Talent wise, the evaluation on Cooke was correct but with him only playing a handful of games with all of the hype around him, certainly a bust.
Most Untapped Potential: This is again Cooke but to switch it up, another candidate are the two running backs in Sapp and Valentine. Sapp probably should have made the move to receiver a long time ago and Valentine never got a chance to be the lead guy in the backfield.
Biggest Steal of the Class: For sure its Fuller who was the lowest ranked prospect they signed that year, even lower than some of the walk-ons, and ended up being one of the team's better players.
Biggest Lost of the Class: The Bulls swung and miss on three five-stars this cycle in FSU running back Sam Nicholson (1632 rushing yards, 22 touchdowns), Alabama linebacker Dominic Walker (85 tackles, 10 tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks) and USC guard Trumaine Williams (52 pancakes, 9 sacks allowed, 3 year starter). They all turned into great players in their own right and even the other swings and misses on the trail were good talent evaluations as Clemson's Maurice McIntyre turned into one of the best tight ends in the country with 136 receptions for 1838 yards and thirteen touchdowns as a four-year starter. Ole Miss' Matt Callahan, who is from Tampa, was a four-year starter at center for the Rebels.

The Bulls are overjoyed after a home 34-13 win against arch-rival UCF
The South Florida Bulls won just seven games last season, needing a regular season finale against a two-win UCF team to do so.
This time around, the War on I-4 featured two teams on the verge of their tenth win. For USF, it'd be a return to the norm, having won at least ten games in the previous seven seasons prior to last season. For the Knights, Roger McCoy would have accomplished something that had been done just once by the Knights in the past six seasons and just twice in the last sixteen years.
In what could be his last home game, Jet Millines made sure it was the Bulls that earned that tenth win, soundly beating the Knights 34-13 to wrap up the regular season on Friday night.
Even with two turnovers that gifted the Knights solid field position in the second quarter, they only produced six points out of it as USF's offense was also off to a wonky start. They eventually got it going with Millines throwing a touchdown pass in the second and third quarter to extend their lead.
USF's defense took care of the rest, holding Khari Dembele to just 2.5 yards per carry and forcing UCF's offense to be one dimensional. In his second start against his former team, Charlie Cooke threw for 267 yards and a touchdown with no turnovers after throwing five interceptions last season in the rivalry game.

DeMarcus Bennett, Malcolm Francois Sr. land another elite arm in Oklahoma's Rashard Woodard
Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports USF Insider
A year after landing the country's top high school arm in Mark Cunningham, USF offensive coordinator and quarterback's coach DeMarcus Bennett continues to impress as a recruiter with the landing of Rashad Woodard who committed to the Bulls on Sunday.
Woodard is the son of an Air Force graduate with the Falcons leading the way in his recruitment for much of the process until USF arrived on the scene a few weeks ago. It wasn't clear if the Bulls were interested in taking a quarterback in this class after signing two last season but with Jet Millines' play this season, the NFL is now an option for the junior as an early departure.
From a talent evaluation standpoint, there's a lot to like about the six-foot-two Woodard who shares a lot of similarities with Cunningham. Woodard was used more as a runner in high school but they are similar athletes with Cunningham perhaps even being the faster of the two and has a 'liver' and more accurate arm. The expectations are for Woodard to redshirt next season behind Cunningham and possible Millines if he returns for a senior season and then compete for a starting job in two to three seasons.
In speaking to those around the program, Woodard's commitment likely ends their pursuit of Connecticut prospect Will Jones at quarterback. Jones was at USF this weekend for an official visit but at the moment, the school isn't planning to sign two quarterbacks in the same class and view Woodard as the better prospect.

With top three receivers likely headed to the NFL, Bulls revamp the room with additions of Morgan and Weiss
Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports USF Insider
Four-star receivers Andre Morgan (Bonita Springs, Flo.) and Nick Weiss (Childersburg, Ala.) have committed to the University of South Florida.
Morgan, who held offers from USC, Georgia and Alabama, is one of the state's fastest players with a reported 40-time of 4.36 on the lasers, masking him the second fastest player in USF's class behind IMG safety Julian Harrell. Morgan has ways to go in terms of developing his skill set as a complete receiver and will need an adjustment period to the level of competition. The staff is high on him and think he can have a similar career as Brent Cunningham, another raw prospect the Bulls signed because of their speed that turned into a productive college receiver.
A few spots below Morgan in the receiver rankings is Weiss, a big bodied receiver out of the Alabama area that fits the mold of either a big slot or versatile Z receiver on the outside. Weiss suffers from concentration drops and had a less than impressive outing this summer on the 7-on-7 circuit but with interest from Florida State and Penn State, there is certainly talent in the six-foot-four receiver who also runs with some physicality when the ball is in his hand.
With the commitments, USF helps raise the floor of their receiver room with some talent likely on the way out as Joseph Moses and Alston Marks could declare early as juniors on top of senior receiver William Sapp. Morgan and Weiss join a class that already includes a five-star in Tampa's Scott Price and potentially another in Miami's Trey Arnold. Arnold will decide between Miami and USF on National Signing Day.

After a whirlwind few months, college football's future get some clarity with finalization of ANAC membership for upcoming season, College Football Playoff format
Jessica West -- SI.com
The American National Athletic Conference (ANAC) has officially announced its reduction to 42 members with former members North Carolina, South Carolina, Clemson, North Carolina State, Duke and Kentucky joining the American Athletic Conference. The ANAC also announced four post-season games that will feature Michigan, Notre Dame, Pittsburgh, Stanford, Alabama, Ole Miss, USC and Oklahoma with the winners rounding out the Champions Division next season as it makes the move to ten teams.
Starting in 2041, the ANAC will retain its previous promotional rules in the Contenders and Rising Division with the top eight teams in the Rising Division replacing the bottom eight teams in the Contenders Division. The Contenders Division Champion will be promoted into the Champions Division along with any other playoff qualifiers. The remaining non-playoff qualifiers will compete in these play-in bowl games.
With the much discussed contraction, the College Football Playoff Committee had previously announced that the Champions Division winner will keep their four automatic bids but are no longer guaranteed to be the top four seeds. Instead, it will be voted on by the committee along with the other four teams in the eight-team format.
The previous format with the Champions Division winners being awarded the top four seeds was widely criticized when undefeated Rutgers was seeded fifth behind three three-loss teams in Alabama, Penn State and Stanford. Despite the less favorable seed, the Scarlet Knights won the whole thing. This season, two undefeated teams in SMU and Miami University of Ohio are seeded sixth and seventh behind multi-loss teams in Purdue, Miami, USF, Ohio State and Michigan State.
