Pennsylvania linebacker prospect Marcus Wiley commits to Bulls
Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports USF Insider

Three-star linebacker Marcus Wiley out of Phoenixville, Pennsylvania has committed to the University of South Florida, becoming the 19th member of the Bulls recruiting class and the first three-star prospect.

Wiley had interest from Alabama, Texas, Michigan and Fresno State with USF being the only school to offer him a scholarship. Wiley joins four-stars Oliver Colvin and Nate Jacobs as the linebackers for this cycle with the plan to play Jacobs at MIKE, Colvin at JACK and Wiley as a potential WILL linebacker.

Originally from Canada, Wiley played a season at nearby Clearwater International Academy as a freshman where he was teammates with current USF players Brandon and Marcellus Smith for their senior season. It's at CIA that Wiley caught the attention of USF's coaching staff due to his athleticism and versatility, playing both running back and linebacker at the time.

Since transferring to Phoenixville Area High School, Wiley has played more of an edge rusher role for the Phantoms, registering twelve sacks in three seasons. The switch back to off-ball linebacker will require some time and in general, Wiley is more of a developmental prospect but the traits and athletic profile are certainly there.

Purdue Boilermakers cannot close out undefeated USF, lose 16-9
In last year's 35-31 win over USF, Purdue quarterback James McBride did not complete a pass until the second quarter, catching fire in the second half and eventually leading the Boilermakers to the comeback win.

As McBride completed ten straight passes to open the second half after not completing a single on in the first half, history appeared destined to repeat itself. USF's defense, however, put a stop to that.

The Bulls intercepted McBride twice in the fourth quarter and halted Purdue's comeback effort to remain undefeated, beating the Boilermakers 16-9 on Saturday in snowy West Lafayette.

USF had a chance to put the game away in the third quarter with the ball in the red zone and leading 13-6 with 2:32 remaining but Mark Cunningham made his first major mistake of the game, throwing across the middle into the endzone to Scott Price but was intercepted by safety Brian Wiley.

Purdue was unable to capitalize as they also turned it over in the red zone with USF nose tackle Brandon Smith deflecting McBride's pass into the hands of linebacker Julian Harrell.

After the Bulls were forced to settle for a field goal following a goal-line stand by Purdue's defense, McBride would once again be intercepted in the red zone, this time by Travis Jones as he tried to lob the jump ball to top target Jeff Frazier.

Frazier, who came into the game with 33 receptions, finished with just one catch for fourteen yards.

USF wouldn't be out of the woods just yet as Cunningham would throw an interception on third down in an effort to seal the game with his own jump ball to Price. USF's defense once again rose to the occasion, forcing a fourth down where the Boilermakers would commit back to back penalties, including illegal touching by Frazier to turn the ball over on downs.

The Bullpen: Marcellus Smith's breakout game comes at the perfect time as draft buzz continues
Jonathan Bright -- BullsNation.com Football Reporter

USF defensive end Marcellus Smith's talent and physical traits have always been undeniable. The production hasn't always been, turning Smith into a polarizing draft prospect heading into his junior season with some pundits viewing him as a potential first round pick while others don't have a draftable grade on him yet.

Smith's performance against Purdue in a premier game is exactly what will help his draft stock, recording six tackles and three tackles for loss along with two quarterback pressures.

It's been a couple of good performances from Smith, recording a sack in the win against Georgia to bring his season total to four, matching his sack total from last season already. Smith is third on the team in tackles for loss with eight on the season and leads all USF defensive linemen with 20 tackles.

The talented EDGE will have a chance to increase his draft stock by the end of the season with some tough matchups ahead with potential All-American BYU offensive tackle Leroy Doyle this week and Texas' Skyler Johnson, one of the top offensive tackles in the Champions Division for the past few seasons.

‣ Mark Cunningham not a semi-finalist for O'Brien despite impressive numbers

USF quarterback Mark Cunningham was not among the twelve semi-finalists for the Davey O'Brien Award which is given at the end of the season to the nation's top quarterback.

Cunningham is sixth in the country in passing yards but trails behind some of the semi-finalists when it comes to total touchdown, rushing yards and passer rating, likely leading to the omission.

By comparison, Cunningham has similar numbers to Heisman favorite Melvin Ingram when it comes to yardage and completion percentage but Ingram has 605 rushing yards and 42 total touchdowns with a 185.7 passer rating. Cunningham has just 20 rushing yards, mostly due to sacks, and only seventeen total touchdowns with a 171.7 passer rating.

‣ Clarence Sullivan among semi-finalist for Thorpe, Bednarik

While Mark Cunningham was snubbed, USF safety Clarence Sullivan was not as he was named a semi-finalist for the Jim Thorpe Award (best defensive back) and Bednarik Award (best defensive player).

Sullivan is one of four USF players to be named semi-finalist for the Thorpe as he is joined by cornerbacks Travis Jones, Akeem Smith and Charlie Robinson.

Defensive end Marcellus Smith is a semi-finalist for the Lombardi Award, given to college football's top defensive linemen. Linebacker Julian Harrell was among the Butkus Award semi-finalists and kicker Chris Sanders for the Lou Groza Award.

Bulls overcome slow start against BYU to knock off the Cougars and improve to 8-0
USF quarterback Mark Cunningham's first pass of the game was an interception that was returned for a touchdown and not long after that, Cunningham would throw another interception and be stripped on a sack, all in the first quarter as the Cougars jumped out to an early 14-7 lead.

The Cougars wouldn't score again until the final minutes of the game while the Bulls scored forty-nine unanswered points to beat BYU 56-21 on Saturday night in Provo.

Cunningham threw for 334 yards and two touchdowns in the rematch from last year's national championship game while Jacob Wheeler rushed for three touchdowns, totaling 106 yards on just sixteen carries.

Similar to the national championship game, it was tough sledding for BYU quarterback James Hall who threw three interceptions and was sacked eight times.
