Pressure Mounting on Filipa Patão as Racing Louisville FC Slides to 9th in NWSL Standings.

Tension is starting to rise at Lynn Family Stadium as Racing Louisville FC fell 3-0 to the Washington Spirit on July 13 — their fourth loss in the last five matches. First-year head coach Filipa Patão now finds herself in a tough spot, with the club sliding to 9th place in the NWSL standings, holding a record of 7-4-6 (25 points).
To make matters worse, the timing couldn’t be more critical. With the NWSL transfer window now open and closing ahead of Racing’s clash with the Portland Thorns on August 24, questions about potential roster changes and tactical shifts are becoming more prominent in the Louisville camp.
At the heart of the team’s struggles is an inability to finish in the final third. While Patão’s tiki taka approach has its admirers, a growing section of the Racing fanbase is becoming skeptical. The short-pass-heavy, possession-based system hasn’t translated into goals — or wins — lately. Despite boasting attacking firepower, Racing has only managed one win in their last five matches, including four losses that have seen them slide down the table.
Leading scorer Savannah DeMelo has 6 goals on the season, placing her 16th in the league, while Kosovare Asllani has added 4 goals, ranking 25th. Those numbers aren’t disastrous, but when combined with a lack of recent production across the rest of the squad, it paints a clearer picture of a team that just can't find the net consistently.
“It's not that we don't have options — we do,” Patão said after the Washington loss. “We just aren't converting, and that's something we’re working on every day.”
Despite the recent slump, Racing Louisville hasn’t fallen completely apart — largely due to the heroics of Katie Lund. The star goalkeeper currently leads the NWSL in clean sheets, a testament to her consistency and shot-stopping ability. But that stellar form could have an unintended consequence — Lund is attracting attention from top European clubs, and with the transfer window open, there are quiet murmurs she could be on the move if the right offer lands on the table.
Losing Lund would be a major blow for Patão’s squad, but it also opens the door for the club to rethink and potentially retool its strategy before the window closes in late August, while striking a big financial deal in the process.
Still, it’s not all doom and gloom in Derby City. While the current run of form is undeniably concerning, Filipa Patão’s job appears to be secure — for now. It’s her first season at the helm, and growing pains are to be expected when introducing a new playing philosophy.
Racing is still within striking distance of a playoff spot, and with a few tweaks — or the right midseason addition — things could turn around quickly. After all, the NC Courage are atop the league with just 32 points, meaning the entire table is still tight, and a string of positive results could quickly change the narrative.
As August 24 approaches and the transfer window is wide open, all eyes will be on how Patão responds. The pressure may be rising, but so too is the potential — Racing Louisville FC still has time to turn this season into something special.

Mid-Season Transfer Window Offers Mixed Results for Racing Louisville FC as Lund Departs, Bibi Deal Falls Through.

The NWSL summer transfer window is nearing it's end, and for Filipa Patão and Racing Louisville FC, it’s been a turbulent ride filled with near-misses, tough decisions, and a handful of key exits.
The biggest headline? Katie Lund, the league leader in clean sheets and arguably the best shot-stopper in the NWSL this season, has officially been transferred to SGS Essen of the Frauen-Bundesliga for a fee of $240,000. The move had been rumored for weeks, with top European clubs circling, and now it’s confirmed: Racing’s defensive wall is heading to Germany.
Lund’s departure is a blow, no doubt, but it also provided Louisville with the opportunity — and financial room — to pursue other targets. Unfortunately, things didn’t go quite according to plan.
After weeks of negotiating, Racing Louisville FC had come to terms with Bibiane Schulze Solano — known across Europe simply as “Bibi” — from Athletic Bilbao. The young center back was viewed as a key piece to reinforce a defense that has remained sturdy but thin on depth.
However, due to the protracted timeline of the Lund deal, Racing was unable to finalize the funds in time. The Bibi deal fell through in the final hours of the window, leaving Patão and her staff visibly frustrated.
Adding insult to injury, another defensive target — Sarah Gorden of Angel City FC — was loaned out to Levante UD, removing her from the table just as Racing was lining up an offer.
Meanwhile, two other players have departed Racing Louisville FC:

Forward Sarah Weber was sold to Sevilla FC for $25,000, a move that gives her a fresh start in Spain’s Liga F.

Midfielder Jordan Baggett was transferred to Kansas City Current for $50,000, with KC currently sitting 6th in the table at 6-9-2 (27 points).
While neither player was a weekly starter, their departures further trim Racing’s depth heading into the crucial final stretch of the season.
Despite the drama, Patão isn’t pressing the panic button just yet. The team’s core — Savannah DeMelo, Kosovare Asllani, Janine Beckie, Taylor Flint, and more — remains intact, and club officials have confirmed that a new transfer is expected to be announced in the coming days. While details are still under wraps, the club seems confident it will bring much-needed reinforcement as the playoff race tightens.
Racing currently sits in 9th place at 7-4-6 (25 points), just behind the playoff line, with the North Carolina Courage leading the pack at 8-8-1 (32 points). There’s still everything to play for.
For Filipa Patão, this transfer window might feel like a missed opportunity, but the bigger picture hasn’t changed. It’s still her first year in charge, and building a cohesive team takes time. There are still plenty of matches to climb the table — and Racing fans will now be watching closely to see how the team responds after losing its starting keeper and missing out on key targets.
Eyes now shift to August 24’s matchup against the Portland Thorns, where the post-window version of Racing Louisville will look to reignite their playoff push — with or without Bibi.
