“With the 32nd pick of the 2022 NBA Draft, the Orlando Magic select Caleb Houston, from the University of Michigan.”

I walked to the back of the room and grabbed a bottle of water off the table. The first round had come and gone and I still wasn’t taken. Not that I was expected to go early, but I thought I would have gone to San Antonio or Dallas since they had picks late in the round.

“With the 35th pick of the 2022 NBA Draft, the Los Angeles Lakers select, David Grace from the University of Houston.”

I heard the applause from my teammates and family in the room and someone pushed a Lakers cap in my hand. It was my mom.

“How did you know?”

“I didn’t we just bought 32 caps.” She winked.

“Always thinking ahead, Mama.”

Dominique handed me my cell phone, it was Rob Pelinka calling to congratulate me on being selected and asking if I was ready to get to work. I told him that I was and I couldn’t wait to get going in the Summer League games. After I hung up the phone, Marcus walked over to me.

“My boy! You did it! Proud of you, Coffee Milk. ”

“Still with that shit, huh, man?”

“Always.”

“What y’all gon do without me next year?”

“We’ll manage.”

After receiving hugs and congratulations, I found Dominique on the other side of the room with her parents. I made my way to her and pulled her to the side.

“So, USC, huh?”

“Looks like it. I’m proud of you, babe.”

“Shit, I’m proud of you, girl. Raising our son and still finishing school in three years. You the real MVP, babe.”

“You had a hand in raising our son too, D. We hold each other down. I told you I would support your dreams. You believed in us and yourself and so do I.”

“Facts, now it’s time for me to support yours. I am not going to blow this opportunity for us. It’s grind time for real. We’re gonna be L.A.’s new power couple in five years. One of the city’s top attorneys and one of the NBA’s top players.”

“You got high ideas, huh?”

“For us? Always.”

Present Day

“That was a good practice today, guys. Try to get some rest tonight. Big game coming up in two days.”

The guys were starting to clear out, but I stayed behind to get some more shots up since it was a light practice today. I’d been shooting for about 15 minutes when I heard someone running across the floor. I sank another shot before turning around just as DJ crashed into my legs. I looked around and saw Dominique and my mom walking into the gym behind him.

“What are you guys doing here?”

“Wow. Don’t sound so happy to see us.”

“Never that, Mama.” I gave her a kiss on the cheek. “It’s not like you three to just show up at practice like this.” I turn to give Dom a kiss on the cheek. “Hey, babe.”

“Well, your son wanted to ask you something.”

“And it couldn’t wait until I got home?”

“No, it couldn’t. Go ahead DJ.” She whispered in his ear and he giggled.

“Daddy, what’s an MVP?”

“Huh?”

I looked at Dominique. She was smiling big.

“Your son asked you a question.”

I heard the question, but I didn’t want to believe it.

“Um, it means the Most Valuable Player. So, like the best player on their team or one of the best players in the league.”

“It means somebody that the team would suck without,” LeBron said coming back into the gym with the rest of the team behind him.

“It means our chances at a championship drop without him,” said Coach Ham.

“Looks like you are about three years ahead of schedule, babe.” Dom said.

“Are you guys serious?”

“As a heart attack.” Coach Ham handed me his phone and there was Commissioner Silver on a video call.

“Congratulations, David. With sixty-nine first place votes, you are this year’s Most Valuable Player.”

“Thank you, sir.”

“You deserved it. You had a spectacular season. Congratulations and good luck in the rest of these playoffs. An official announcement will be made tomorrow and we’ll get with your team with more details about the ceremony.”

I thanked him again and disconnected the call. I looked around at my teammates and my family.

“I couldn’t have done any of this without all of y’all. Especially my best girls.”

“You put in the work, son,” my mom said.

“That’s right,” Dom nodded in agreement.

“But the both of you are my MVPs. You’ve been holding me down on this journey.”

“Oh, that boy about to cash out this offseason,” yelled Marcus from the back of the crowd.
