Two Recruits Choose Conway While Many Head Elsewhere

Image

Conway, SC. - Coastal Carolina’s march through a gauntlet of ranked opponents has vaulted the Chanticleers into the ACC driver’s seat. But away from the field, head coach Kade Vaughn is facing a different kind of challenge.

This week brought a mixed bag for Coastal on the recruiting trail. The Chanticleers landed commitments from two top-400 prospects — defensive end Gill Frantz (No. 48 overall, four-star) and athlete Ian Ojulari (No. 343, four-star) — but also came up short on several key targets.

“You can’t win every recruiting battle,” Vaughn said. “But to see two of our top targets head down to Miami? That stings.”

Miami pulled in a pair of blue-chippers in linebacker Duke Ogleetree (five-star, No. 29) and running back Andre Miles (No. 41). Elsewhere, defensive tackle Antoine Michel (No. 74) committed to Georgia, offensive tackle Eli Mount (No. 77) pledged to Ohio State, and guard Pete Mangum (No. 98) chose Notre Dame.

Coastal remains in the mix for two top-30 prospects — wide receiver Morgan Briggs (No. 13) and defensive end Russ DeVan (No. 27) — both of whom are expected to announce decisions in the coming weeks.

The program also absorbed another blow off the field. Safety Sean Maggio’s felony assault arrest triggered ACC probationary penalties, costing Coastal five scholarships. With just 16 seniors departing, the immediate impact is manageable, but Vaughn acknowledged the longer-term concern.

“If it piles up, that’s where it can really hurt you,” Vaughn said.

For now, Coastal’s focus remains on protecting its unbeaten record. But the next few weeks on the recruiting trail may be just as consequential as Saturdays on the field.

Blacksburg, VA. - The word “bleak” summed up Saturday night in Lane Stadium — the torrential downpour, the sagging crowd, and the performance of a Virginia Tech team battered 45-6 by Coastal Carolina.

“Every facet, we were outperformed today,” said a subdued Brent Pry, whose Hokies have now dropped six straight, putting his tenure squarely under scrutiny.

From the opening drive, Coastal seized control. Heisman frontrunner Devin Hajrullahu set the tone with a 55-yard catch-and-run, part of a night in which he piled up 243 total yards (185 rushing, 58 receiving). It marked his third consecutive game with more than 200 yards from scrimmage.

“I don’t think it’s a stretch to say he’s Reggie Bush-esque at this point,” head coach Kade Vaughn said. “Every time he touches the ball, you hold your breath because it could be magic.”

The Hokies generated three explosive plays in the passing game — completions of 60, 63, and 41 yards — but none led to touchdowns. Brayden Brazill’s 60-yard grab ended in a Mike Momah interception in the end zone, while the other two drives stalled and resulted in field goals.

“I think the biggest key to our success this year is a consistent pass rush,” defensive coordinator Tony White said. “We’re not lucking into sacks — we’re creating them with exotic looks and pressure. Once a quarterback starts second-guessing? You’ve already won.”

The numbers told the story: Coastal ran for 285 yards behind Hajrullahu and Justice Spear (98 yards), while quarterback Fredrick Meredith went 20-of-24 for 209 yards and three touchdowns, marred only by a late red-zone interception.

Coastal (7-0) returns to Conway next week to host Georgia Tech (3-2) before heading into a midseason bye.

Coastal Carolina Redshirt Freshman, Former 5* Prospect Richard Hatch Arrested On First Degree Burglary Charge

Image

Conway, SC. - Coastal Carolina football has been rocked by another off-field incident for the second time in three weeks. Early Tuesday morning, redshirt freshman Richard Hatch, a former five-star recruit from Rosemount, Minn., was arrested and charged with first-degree burglary after an alleged armed break-in at a Conway residence that left one person injured.

According to a Horry County Police Department incident report, officers responded at 1:42 a.m. to a call from a home on Pine Shadow Drive. Witnesses told police a masked individual forced entry through a rear door, brandished a handgun, and struck the homeowner during a struggle before fleeing. The victim sustained non-life-threatening injuries but required treatment at Conway Medical Center.

Police say an eyewitness later identified the suspect as Hatch, 19, who was taken into custody without incident several hours later at an off-campus apartment. Investigators recovered a handgun believed to have been used in the crime.

Hatch was denied bond during a Tuesday morning hearing and remains in custody at the Horry County Detention Center awaiting trial. Under South Carolina law, first-degree burglary involving a deadly weapon and bodily injury carries a potential sentence of 15 years to life in prison.

Head coach Kade Vaughn announced Hatch’s permanent dismissal from the program Tuesday afternoon.

“What happened early this morning is unacceptable and deeply disappointing,” Vaughn said in a written statement. “Richard’s actions were dangerous and have no place in our program or on this campus. Effective immediately, he is no longer a member of the Coastal Carolina football team. As a program, we are also taking a hard look at ourselves — this is the second felony arrest involving one of our players and we will implement mandatory educational classes for all student-athletes to reinforce the seriousness of their choices and responsibilities.”

Hatch was one of the most celebrated signees in program history, rated the No. 7 overall prospect in the nation in the 2030 recruiting cycle. He chose Coastal over offers from Notre Dame and Ohio State, part of the Chanticleers’ ongoing push to compete at the top level of the ACC. Hatch was redshirting this fall while expected to contend for playing time in 2032.

The university declined further comment, citing the ongoing legal process.

Tuesday’s arrest comes just seventeen days after former five-star safety Sean Maggio was charged with aggravated assault following a post-game altercation, an incident that also resulted in his dismissal from the team.
