Pitchers looked like they were throwing for batting practice as the Athletics swept the Los Angeles Angels with a win that saw the two teams combine for 12 homeruns.

The Halos got things started in the bottom of the first inning. Zach Neto hit a no-doubt homerun with his first at-bat of the game, sending it 362 feet to left field. Jo Adell would make it back-to-back homeruns with another solo shot, this one going 342 feet to the right.

If it were possible for one pitcher in this contest to standout as particularly bad, Yusei Kikuchi took that honor with both hands. At the top of the third inning, he would give up four homeruns with Max Muncy, Jacob Wilson, Shea Langeliers and Nick Kurtz all going yard. Kurtz's moonshot would give him a homerun in all four games of the series.

Los Angeles wouldn't be denied, however, as they retook the lead in the bottom of that inning. Adell crushed his second homerun of the game before Jorge Soler hit a single. Yoan Moncada would destroy a hanging pitch, sending it 434 feet to dead center to make it 5-4.

Kikuchi opened the next half inning by letting up two base runners, giving Muncy the opportunity for a three-run homerun and he took it with a 422-foot effort to left.

The game would quiet down for a couple innings until Oswald Peraza and Neto hit back-to-back homers to tie it up at seven. However, Taylor Soderstorm would put the A's back ahead in the top of the eight inning with a 343-foot dinger.

The A's would get some insurance with the only run of the game not scored from a homerun in the top of the ninth inning.

"Well, that was ridiculous." - Los Angeles Angels manager Kurt Suzuki

I applaud your belief that this team somehow has a choice on who it lets beat them.

Angels move Jorge Soler and a prospect for catcher Rafael Marchan

The Los Angeles Angels took a step toward phoning this season in as they traded outfielder Jorge Soler and a pitching prospect to the Philadelphia Phillies for catcher Rafael Marchan.

In addition to Soler, the Angels sent minor leaguer Ryan Johnson to Philadelphia to sweeten the deal.

Soler has struggled through the first couple months of the season, hitting just .194. However, when he has been able to hit the ball, he has crushed it with eight homeruns and 23 RBIs in the first 55 games of the season. The Phillies hope that a change of scenery will allow him to return to the level of play he had when he was with the San Francisco Giants in 2024 and the Miami Marlins in '23.

"The Angels aren't winning anything this season so it makes sense for them to look to 2027."

The arrival of Marchan will likely spell the end of Travis d'Arnaud's time as the backup catcher to Logan O'Hoppe. The 37-year-old d'Arnaud is in the final year of his contract in Los Angeles and was never expected to be resigned by the Halos.

The move seems to be a step toward building a more defensive team to make up for the Angels' issues with hitting and the frailties in their pitching rotation. Marchan has exceptional pop time and a strong enough arm that there won't be too many players stealing on him when he's on the field.

Los Angeles manager Kurt Suzuki could consider moving O'Hoppe to DH in an effort to get Marchan on the diamond more often, but that's a decision that will be made at a later time.
