Spurs make claim to best in Europe with thrashing of champion PSG in Paris
Kwamele Owusu's first match as Spurs manager was a 3-1 loss to PSG in the UEFA Super Cup and then got bounced out by PSG in the Champions League later that season.
Almost three years later, Spurs waltzed into Paris and battered the former European champions around in a decisive 4-1 victory, powered by summer signing Victor Osimhen to officially declare themselves as not only the kings of London and the champion of England but the best team in European football.
Dominant would be an understatement of Spurs' beginning to their 2027-28 campaign. They've beaten Liverpool twice already in all comps. They've put five goals past Arsenal. They've scored thirty five league goals. They've conceded four and two of those came in their lone league loss of the season. Their 31+ goal differential doesn't only lead the league, if you were to combine the goal differential of the next four teams on the table, they would only fall a goal behind.
The addition of Osimhen has been the perfect addition for a Spurs attack that seems capable of scoring flurries at any moment, even after slow starts. He's up to twenty-three goals, including nineteen in the Prem with a real shot at challenging for fifty goals if he's able to keep up this pace.
Wonderkid signing Demba Sambou has turned into a regular and has held his own against some quality attackers. Scott McTominay has added some real physicality to a midfield that is perfectly built for Owusu's counter attacking style and winning aerial duels and Konstantinos Tzolakis has steadied the ship between the sticks after a few shaky starts.
Perhaps the scariest part of all of this is this isn't Tottenham at their best. Reece James is still rounding into shape after an early injury, which could have been predicted. Rodrygo has been sidelined for the last two months with a toe injury and will likely be back later this month or in the new year. Mathys Tel is still adjusting to his new role as a second striker and Spurs are still sorting out what their best midfield pairing is going to be with McTominay between Pape Mater Sarr, Alex Scott, Archie Gray and Lucas Bergvall.
They'll certainly be tested in December with fixtures against Manchester City (H) and Liverpool (A) after they open the season against Fulham. After hosting Manchester City, who are rounding into form after a slow start, they place Copenhagen in mid-week European football, travel to Ipswich and then play London rivals Crystal Palace at home before the highly anticipated clash against Liverpool, their fourth this season already. They end the month at home against Burnley with a chance to perhaps head into the New Year with a 10+ point lead at the top of the table, a similar position they found themselves in last year.
Osimhen was expensive, but he's proving to be worth every penny. What an outcome so far, and with 5-0 and 4-1 wins at Arsenal and PSG, no one can doubt Spurs' quality and ambition.
