SMU makes it five straight! Thomas, Mustangs outlast Horned Frogs in Battle for the Iron Skillet

Game Summary

"It seems as though everyone thought we were going to have a down year this season," said head coach Nico Augustine during his post-game media availability. "I guess we weren't CC'd on that."

SMU, once again crowned the number one team in the nation, fought and clawed their way to a 27-17 victory over the TCU Horned Frogs, continuing Coach Augustine's undefeated reign over their rivals. SMU has now claimed five straight Battle for the Iron Skillet matchups.

The team's key to victory was to dominate the line of scrimmage, which they managed to accomplish behind a steady running game. They fired off behind running back duo Brian Volson and true freshman Shaq Thomas with incumbent number one running back Cal McCalebb taking a backseat to the Mustangs' power-run game.

Both running backs finished with 12 carries and at least 80 yards on the ground, with the younger Thomas getting into the end zone twice. Quarterback Steven Bequette hooked up with number one wide receiver Kenyon Natson with an outrageous climbing catch that the sophomore managed to bring down with one hand.

"That's what we expect out of a talent like him," expressed offensive coordinator Jeff Traylor. "Kenyon [Natson] has been chomping at the bit to prove that we didn't lose as much as analysts thought we did in that room with Marquis [Avant] and Tomas [Smoker] gone. I think he's gone a long way to show that tonight."

The one sore spot of the night came on the defensive side of the ball, with the secondary getting blown up by Horned Frogs quarterback Kurt Eagles and All-Big 12 wide receiver Dennis Tam. Tam dominated the flurry of cornerbacks he faced off against, namely Jameson Cotton and Kaseem Boykins, who did not finish the game due to injury. The team opted to keep free safety help on Cotton or Boykins rather than switching number one cornerback Cole Crews onto him, who was dealing with mostly man coverage situations on David Yeboah, who ended up finishing the game with only three catches for 30 yards.

"That's something we don't like to see," commented defensive coordinator Trent McCauley, whose defense hasn't managed to get to the quarterback as often as it did last year. Edge rusher Davon Kamara notably did not finish the game, but reports are signalling to it being out of caution rather than concern.

The Mustangs head to South Bend next week, pitting their undefeated start against #3-ranked Notre Dame's in a Game of the Week matchup.

TCU always plays us close, but they've really turned their school into a powerhouse. That offense is nuts.

You ain't lying. Definitely the least productive pass rush we've had in years.

Saturday, September 13, 2030 | Notre Dame Stadium (South Bend, IN)

Week 3 Preview: at #3 Notre Dame (2-0, 0-0)

Synopsis
The SMU Mustangs get yet another early test to threaten their undefeated streak, taking on the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in South Bend fresh off slipping past their rivals, TCU in a hard-running matchup. The biggest question mark for the Mustangs will have to be slowing down this fiery Notre Dame offense.

Quarterback Kevin Momah has no problem going deep, especially with the speed duo of wide receiver Bryce Thierry and Collin Edmond on he outside. Not to mention running back Christian Hicks being able to dominate with Notre Dame's classically dominant offensive line. The Mustangs have struggled with the run, which is abnormal for an Nico Augustine-led SMU defense, that has put record-setting numbers for run defense in recent years.

Getting to the quarterback early and often is going to be paramount to the Mustangs defense, needing reigning Edge Rusher of the Year Davon Kamara to get going. On offense, the Mustangs are certainly going to lean on their run game in the raucous Notre Dame stadium. The expectation is that running backs Brian Volson and Shaq Thomas are going to get most of the carries as opposed to Cal McCalebb and Justice Spielman.

Quarterback Steven Bequette will have to continue to make good decisions with the football, with his only interception going from a bobbled attempt of a catch by Eric DeLuca that was snatched up by a cornerback nearby last week against TCU.
