THE COURSE OF THE INEVITABLE PT.2
It's been three months since Recks' ACL injury and after successful surgeries, Recks found him-self hard at work rehabilitating after a few morale support chats with Derrick Rose and his overcome of adversity. This road to recovery wasn't his first trip, knowing it's a process that's on a day-to-day evaluation. What Dr. Allen had mentioned to Recks stuck with him for the long haul, him needing to adjust to his knee. For Recks, if it's not 100%, it's nothing at all. But going 0-2 against a ACL tear, especially a more severe tear than the first, he knew had to make changes.
March, 29th. It was a Wednesday, and a special one. For it was his and Kairos' birthday, and they always took this day as their personal day on earth. It was another year, and Kairos was growing fast as he turned 9 year old today. It was astonishing to Recks to see his first born come into his-self, already shooting up to height of 5'6" with his linky build, beginning to identify him-self, understand meaning behind things that are the complexity of life. But Recks always advised Kairos to remain a kid as long as possible, cherish his youth. With all that is wrong with the world today, Recks and Khyri did their best to shield him from the blunders of society. But today was a day of festives, and for Kairos, his only birthday wish was to hang out with his old man, who also turned 23 of age.
Recks spent the early morning, breaking down rehab into a couple of mini sessions while Kairos was school. He had wanted to put some work in and enjoy the rest of his day along with his son.
"Khy, I'm home!" Recks shouted as he entered his home.
Khyri strolls out of bedroom with both toddlers in arms, as the boy of the triplets was fast asleep for his nap. "Welcome back home, how was rehab?" She softly speaks over the babies.
Recks carefully takes one of the girls after kissing Khyri, cooing and slow rocking his daughter. "It was good, felt like I made some progress. I'm far from where I want to be, but you know, one day at a time, right precious?" Recks inadvertently answered as he tend to his daughter.
"That's all you can do. I'm just glad to see you back on your feet everyday. Please, no more hospitals", Khyri stressed sarcastically.
"Yeah, yeah, I know. Never been my best moments dealing with hospitals."
"Tell me about it. Doctors almost had to admit you in the hospital's care after you passed out at the sight of me pushing out a third child."
"Who would've thought you was THAT fertile, sheesh!" Recks taunted. "But I am happy to see all these beautiful babies of ours. Speaking of which, where's our other little one?"
"He's actually asleep. Other than these two, he didn't put up a fight to stay awake."
"Yeah, well, at least one of us is getting some rest."
Both Khyri and Recks took a seat on the couch, surfing through channels as they continued their conversation among the two while the girls finally falling asleep. By that time, it was almost 3pm, and school was to let out.
"So, what you got planned today for the birthday boys?" Khyri asked.
"Well, he said he just wanted to chill. Didn't ask for much. I guess I'll take him out, get him fitted, freshened up with a haircut and smooch two court side seats to a game tonight. Pistons in town, figured we enjoy ourselves. Plus all he's been wanting to do is meet the fellas. Boys night out you can say."
"Sounds fun", Khyri nodded. "Never took me to a game, but okay. I see how it is", faking her tears with her act.
Recks wanted to laugh but with his daughter fast asleep on his chest, but settled for a light-hearted chuckle. "Alright, fine, I'll take you to a middle school game, we can ask the coach to let you run with the team."
"Oh, you got jokes. Don't forget, this WNBA champion and mom of three schooled you one-on-one already." Khyri shot back with a smug face.
"Four", Recks implied.
"Four what?"
"Mom of four. Kairos too."
"Oh no, I could never be his mom, I don't know how to fill that role for him."
"You're doing a pretty damn good job at it for someone who doesn't know", Recks assured. "I see the way he takes to you. You may not be his mom biologically, but he definitely looks at you as if. He respects you in that manner, not only cause you gave him three wonderful siblings to look after, but a family, a home. This was all you."
"You really think so?"
"Definitely. Look, we had our ups and downs, trials and errors, but somehow, we found a way to make through the mud. Ain't none of this was easy, especially for me. But we're here now. We worked through our problems and every single day you've shown me you've been here by my side. Your efforts never goes unnoticed and I appreciate that to the fullest."
"You're too sweet. I'm lucky to have you in my life and I honestly don't know what I'd do with without you."
"Yeah, I know", Recks replied smugly.
"Let alone know what I'd do with you", Khyri shot back.
"Oh, I know, but lets save that for later", Recks gives Khyri the wink.
"Oh no, I'm done pushing out your big head babies", Khyri laughs just as Kairos made his way inside from school.
"Hey Dad, hey Khyri!" Kairos shouted at a distance, closing in on them. Khyri signaled for Kairos to be quieter as his sisters were sound asleep.
"Hey kiddo. How was school?"
"Boring. Each class gave us tests. Only had fun during P.E. and recess."
"Well, school isn't meant to be fun, and for that, school sucks", Recks extended his hand for a five as Kairos obliged.
"So, how did you do on your tests?"
"I don't know, we get our results tomorrow the teachers said."
"Okay, how do you think you did?"
"I don't know. Think I did okay."
"Okay?" Recks asked curiously.
"Yeaah", Kairos answered with a smile creeping on his face.
Recks silently looked at Kairos for moment then squinting his eyes, "You cheated didn't you?"
"Nooooo..." Kairos let out a small laugh.
"Uh huh, anyway. You got any homework? If so, get to it and do it right. I'll be checking over it before we do anything birthday boy."
"Okay, okay, I'm on it." Kairos takes his backpack and scurry off to his room.
Khyri couldn't help but admire how much Kairos is of Recks, easily bring a smile to people's faces whomever they're around.
"You know, I remember a remember a certain exam you did okay on back in our senior year", Khyri added.
"Don't start that mess, you know I hate science... Nerd."
