2027 Week Seven Preview - Texas State (1-4) @ Oregon State (4-1)
Ricky McKinley // Dam DailyPublished: October 1st, 2027

Fresh off a bye week after a sterling 4-1 start, the Beavers are back in action as they kick off Pac-12 conference play in a rematch of the 2026 Pac-12 Championship Game. These squads have gone in drastically different directions since last year's matchup at Allegiant Stadium, with the Bobcats still searching for their first FBS-level win in 2027.

After how the Beavers survived a brutal three-game stretch, with their only loss coming in Provo to Bear Bachmeier and the BYU Cougars, expectations for the Beavs are reaching a fever pitch as conference play kicks off.

Before we get to the newest "Leon's Lowdown," let's take a quick gander at how the Bobcats and Beavers stack up since they last clashed at Allegiant Stadium.

Leon's Lowdown

RM: "The team is coming off a huge upset win in Oxford, but now it's been two weeks since you took the field with the Week 6 bye. Is that something you welcome to let the team readjust after an upset, or would you rather get right back into it and ride the wave?"

AL: "It's a bit of both. You'd love to keep the good vibes rolling, but that's also dangerous. Guys can start feeling themselves and not recognize the work it took to get there. We had that a bit already this year, losing focus against BYU after an emotional win in Eugene. It was only for a half, but it was enough to cost us the game. I think after that experience, we wouldn't have fallen into the trap again. But with the bye week, we were able to celebrate, then lock in. We're ready, Ricky."

RM: "Focusing back on the matchup, this is a rematch from last year's 2026 Pac-12 Conference Championship. Despite that, both squads are heading in different directions. What do you see on tape as the biggest difference between last year's Bobcats and now?"

AL: "They lost a lot of talent to graduation and in the portal. It's the dark side of the current climate in college football. You can have a great year, great team, but after one year of success, if you don't have the proper resources, you won't keep the team. Brad Jackson and Greg Burrell left in the portal and they didn't have a way to replace them. Plus, GJ Kinne left after the season. That's a lot of turnover to try and navigate all at once. That being said, we aren't overlooking them. They don't have an FBS win yet and we don't plan on being the first."

RM: "Switching gears a bit on this last question, Coach. You mentioned that for some of the "lesser" schools, keeping your talent after a successful year is difficult. What made it different for Oregon State, who kept most of their impact players and doubled down with more talent in the portal as well?"

AL: "It started the same offseason that I was hired, Ricky. Leadership terminated the contract with Blueprint Sports, who previously managed the NIL program through the Dam Nation collective, and decided to keep it more in house. They hired former Alabama assistant director of player personnel Eron Hodges with the specific directive to manage NIL deals and recruiting in that aspect. The influx of available resources throughout the initiative allowed us to stay competitive with our in-house players, as well as bend the ear of players nationally. But even with those resources, if we weren't building and selling a competitive culture, I don't think we would have had the same success we have enjoyed the past two years. The NIL collective gets their ears perked, but we sell them with what we're building as an institution here in Corvallis and to me, that's the difference."

•••

It's deeper than football in Corvallis now and the surge of our program, combined with the downfall of others, proves that. Leadership and athletic director Scott Barnes doubled down on the program, bringing in key pieces in the NIL program and obviously the coaching staff, to usher in change sooner than later.

It's telling to see how a team like Texas State that was in the championship game a year ago, and gave Oregon State a run for their money in the regular season, is suddenly searching for a win against an FBS program. If the turnaround from 10 losses to 10 wins didn't make you appreciate the grind, seeing the struggles of some others teams in the conference should make the Beavers' faithful thankful for the sudden turnaround. It may not last forever, but we're going to enjoy it while it does.

As far as the contest against Texas State? 48-10 thrashing. The boys are gonna be feasting in that backfield and building on their 26 sacks, which is still ranked 1st nationally even after a bye.

What A Difference A Season Makes - Beavers Throttle Bobcats In Championship Game Rematch
Ricky McKinley // Dam DailyPublished: October 2nd, 2027

There's domination, and then there is embarrassment. And what the Oregon State Beavers did to the Texas State Bobcats at Reser Field today? That's embarrassing.

The Beavers jumped all over the Bobcats from the opening quarter, taking a 21-3 lead early and never looking back. Outside of a prolonged first drive, aided by a 42-yard completion to Max Anger, and a 53-yard touchdown bomb to Kylen Evans in the third quarter, the Bobcats' offense was mostly swallowed up by the Beavers' top-ranked defense, with MLB Manu Hasty tallying seven tackles for loss by himself in the effort.

It wasn't all great for the Beavers, however, as Kallen Gutridge went down early in the 1st quarter after being drilled on a read-option keeper, coming up clutching his shoulder. Gutridge would leave the game and did not return, although reports indicated he could have gone if necessary.

It would not be necessary. Oregon State took a 27-3 lead into the half and finished with a convincing 54-10 win behind a defense that logged six sacks, twenty tackles for loss, and only surrendered 152 total yards to the Bobcats, who are still searching for their first win over an FBS-level program. In addition to the suffocating defense, running back Salahadin Allah had himself a day with 147 rushing yards and a school record five touchdowns in the victory.

Let's take it to the post-game and see what defensive coordinator Armando Leon has to say about another dominating effort.

•••

Question One - Chip Swarley (CW Sports): "You spoke with Dam Daily's Ricky McKinley before the contest about the investment that Oregon State made into the NIL fund and how that helped the program claw back to competitiveness. When you see Texas State struggling one season removed from a conference championship appearance, do you think more programs should follow the Beavers' blueprint?"

Armando Leon: "I think they have to at least consider it, Chip. The main contributors to that Bobcats team that we faced in the championship game last year either graduated, or took higher paying offers at P4 schools. You saw today what happens when a team gets decimated like that. But on the other side of the coin, I may be biased, but I think Oregon State put their resources in the right places too. If myself, Coach Smith, or Eron Hodges don't work out, it's a sunken cost. Not every program has the wherewithal to not only secure the proper amount of resources, but the ability to find high-level talent that is in their price range. 'Cause if they strike out just once, they miss their shot and it's unlikely they get another one."

Question Two - Olivia LeRusso (Oregonlive): "Despite a 5-1 start now, there are still those in the national media saying this Beaver defense is 'iffy.' What do you say to that?"

Armando Leon: "I don't know what more we could realistically do, Olivia. We're top five in points allowed, yards allowed, and lead the nation in both sacks and tackles for loss. That sounds pretty un-iffy to me, but what do I know? I'm just a coach. Realistically, there will always be haters in the media, in the opposing locker room, across the country. We block them out. We know what we're doing, what we're building, and the belts we're handing out. Just ask Oregon how that belt feels."

•••

At this point, I don't know how you could discredit this defense. Aside from ONE bad half against the BYU Cougars, this unit has performed with the best in the nation. And you can't sit there and say "oh they're playing Mountain West rejects to get these stats," they held Oregon OFF THE BOARD.

But, Coach Leon is right. Haters gonna hate. We're just going to keep building here in Corvallis, 'cause if today was any indication?

We run the Pac-12 now. And if you didn't know? Well, now you know. Sucka.

Despite Hot Start, Recruiting Trail Remains Lukewarm As Beavers Loss As Many Commits As They Gain
Ricky McKinley // Dam DailyPublished: October 5th, 2027

The Oregon State Beavers may be rolling on the field, winning their 5th game of the season in dominant fashion, but the recruiting trail remains lukewarm at best for Coach Smith & Co. But before we get to the bad news, let's look at the newest Beavers slated to join the squad.

Khamari Mebane is the headliner of the class so far as the 512th-ranked recruit is looking to become the latest of a growing trend of athletic linebackers in Corvallis. Mebane, who is listed at 5'11" and 239 pounds, brings the speed defensive coordinator Armando Leon covets in his multiple 3-3-5 look. But speed isn't the only trait of Mebane's game. His high school coaches praise the Clearwater, Florida native's instincts and drive to be the best. "We have to drag him out of the film room, no joke," said one coach. That dedication to film and the athletic ability to back it up allows Mebane to play sideline-to-sideline and not only be in the right position to make the play, but get there before the opposition on occasion. "He's a heat-seeking missile, always around the ball because he usually knows where the play is funneling to," added the coach.

Joining Mebane in committing is a pair of less heralded recruits in 1,197th-ranked tight end Aries Brockel and 1,757th-ranked athlete Jason Bethel. Brockel is described as another offensive lineman on the field, possessing plus blocking ability with enough speed to keep defenses on their toes. Bethel, meanwhile, is a bit of a tweener in his own right. Bethel plays defensive end for Kenny Catholic High School in Burien, Washington, but doesn't possess the strength to seal the edge at the next level. Many project Bethel as a will linebacker in college thanks to his plus speed and 6' 241-pound frame.

While the Beavers secured a trio of commitments, those that didn't choose Corvallis loom large. Cornerback David Akinmoladun (925th) and athlete Garrison Rourke (1,055th) chose to head to sunny Los Angeles, while quarterback Amari Williams (1,494th) chose to pursue the skies with Air Force, and finally cornerback Eric Granger (1,507th) decided he was more of a party-man and opted for the Arizona State Sun Devils.

More good news should be on the horizon, however, as tackle Nick Slade (463rd) and athletes Dom Nicholson (481st) and Fredrick Flowers (523rd) all have Oregon State listed atop their boards as they begin to trim them down to their final five schools.

"We're disappointed about a few of the guys we had on the board," acknowledged Armando Leon, "Especially Rourke—I really think he had the tools to be a demon off the edge. But that's life; we regroup and try our best to minimize our losses."

2027 Week Eight Preview - #24 Oregon State (5-1) @ Utah State (3-3)
Ricky McKinley // Dam DailyPublished: October 8th, 2027

The Beavers head back to Utah in Week Eight hoping for a better result when they take the field in Logan, Utah, to face the 3-3 Utah State Aggies. The last time the Beavers were in Utah, the BYU Cougars handed them a vicious 37-21 mauling to end their 3-game winning streak and hand them their first loss of 2027.

While the Utah State Aggies did manage to knock off the Oklahoma Sooners in Week 1, they've stumbled since with a 3-3 record, although last week's win over the Washington State Cougars ended their three-game losing streak and brought them to .500.

In other news, our Beavers are ranked once again! The last time the Beavers cracked the AP Poll was in Week 12 of last season after their win over the Boise State Broncos. For those that don't remember, it was a short reign inside the rankings, as a loss to Washington State knocked them right back out of the poll for good.

After we look at the statistical breakdown of the two programs, we'll get to the "Leon's Lowdown," where the man himself talks about keeping the momentum going and avoiding losing that number next to their name after one week.

Leon's Lowdown

RM: "Back in the rankings, and man does it feel good! A few weeks late if you ask me, but I think that loss in Provo weighed heavily in that decision. I know you already know; the last time we cracked the rankings we quickly fell back out. What does the team need to do this time to keep that number climbing?"

AL: "By ignoring it, Ricky. We aren't playing to impress the AP voters; we're playing to represent Oregon State. The number is great, but the only number I'm counting is in the wins column. The guys know what happened last year, a lot of them were here, so while we did talk about not repeating mistakes, you can't chase ghosts either. Win or lose tomorrow, we still lost last year. So, we're just looking to keep the train rolling and continuing to prove that the Pac-12 runs through Corvallis."

RM: "The defense was good last year, finishing in the top 25 nationally, but it's risen to another level this year. Is that the result of getting more "Leon" guys, the familiarity with coaching, or just a combination of everything?"

AL: "Getting guys that fit our system is a big part of it, no doubt. The former regime ran a more vanilla 4-2-5 and had players on the roster to fit that. We play a more aggressive, speed-focused style. That's difficult to do without the speed aspect and we felt that at times last year. Not talking ill of any player from last year's squad, but facts are facts. This year, we've got a lot more guys that fit our roles to a T and it's showing on paper."

RM: "I'm going to apologize in advance for asking this, Coach, but I've got bosses too. We know you visited South Carolina last year and whether you declined the job, or were ever offered in the first place, is undisclosed. And I'm not asking you to disclose that info, just so we're clear. But with Matt Campbell at Nebraska, Rich Rod at West Virginia, James Franklin at Penn State, Kirk Ferentz at Iowa, and Elijah Drinkwitz at Arkansas all on the hot seat, do you foresee one of those programs making a run at hiring you away this winter?"

AL: "While I don't approve of the question, I understand you've got to ask it. So I'll give you the best I've got. I feel like of the defensive coordinators around the country, I'm top five. No slight to anyone, that's just my honest opinion. So in that framing, it would make sense for one of those programs to reach out, if they do in fact fire their current coach. I'd never wish for someone to be fired to clear a path for me, but it's the game we're in. I can't predict the future and I won't make empty promises, so that's the best answer you're going to get, Ricky. Now, if you'll excuse me, I've got a game to prepare for."

I have to say, that's the most straightforward Coach Leon has been about the prospect of leaving Corvallis since last year's visit to South Carolina. If the scenarios play out where the Beavers keep winning and other schools keep losing, it's hard not to see a scenario where Coach Leon simply gets an offer he can't refuse, as much as we'd hate to see him go.

But before that, we've got to win some more games. Namely, a trip to Logan.

I think our return to Utah is going to be night-and-day from the last trip. I believe the Aggies are slightly, and only slightly, better than Texas State and they clearly have some talent if they knocked off the Sooners early this year. Or maybe, it was just a case of Oklahoma having to knock the rust off.

Either way, Oregon State 48 Utah State 13. Book it.

Beavs' Keep Rolling Despite Gutridge's Shaky Return
Ricky McKinley // Dam DailyPublished: October 9th, 2027

It wasn't the prettiest return to the field for Kallen Gutridge, who was knocked out early against Texas State last week, but after the defense swung the momentum with a strip-sack returned for a touchdown, the junior was able to put together enough drives to keep the Aggies at bay in the 34-13 win.

Early on, it looked like the Aggies might have more of the magic they utilized to stun the Oklahoma Sooners in Week One, driving their first two possessions deep into Beaver territory before settling for field goals. Gutridge and the Oregon State offense were able to strike on their second drive, aided greatly by Salahadin Allah's efforts, but after a quick three-and-out saw Gutridge go 0/3, the pressure was on the Oregon State defense to get a stop to preserve the slim 7-6 lead.

And did they ever. Mammoth defensive end Luke Levengood flopped onto CJ Tiller, forcing the ball loose and who else, but Manu Hasty was there for the scoop and score touchdown. Suddenly, it felt like the game was being played at Reser Stadium the way the momentum flipped.

Hasty and Jalen Smith each recorded a sack when the Aggies retook the field and Gutridge took advantage of the short field following the three-and-out with a 29-yard touchdown pass to Zachary Card in the final 30 seconds as the Beavers took a 21-6 lead into the break.

It was all Oregon State from there, despite a late 74-yard rumble by Adrian Droogsma that cut the lead to 31-13 midway through the fourth. Sailasa Vadrawale III recorded an interception in his return from a foot fracture and the Beavers' defense racked up eight sacks and 17 total tackles for loss in another dominating effort from the 24th-ranked Oregon State Beavers.

Let's take it to the post-game where Coach Leon discussed blocking out the noise and keeping the "next game" mentality going strong.

•••

Question One - Hank Jacobs (The Utah Statesmen): "Last time the Beavers were ranked, they flopped in epic fashion in Pullman against the Washington Cougars. What was the talk like in the locker room this week to avoid another disappointing loss after fighting so hard to get into the rankings?"

Armando Leon: "For the guys that were here last year, we talked about how much that loss stung after working so hard for the validation all year. For the guys that weren't, it was simply a reminder about the falloff after Oregon. We were feeling ourselves and walked into Provo thinking we had all the answers. We failed that test. So, as much as you want to say the only number that matters is in the win column, the AP poll does play heavily into where we want to be at season's end. It's a battle of keeping the focus on making our next game, our best game, while also being cognizant that if we lose, the odds of us getting back into this position, this year, dwindle each time we don't put the W on the board."

Question Two - Olivia LeRusso (Oregonlive): "What can you say about the return of Sailasa Vadrawale III and what does his presence do that changes this defense?"

Armando Leon: "Sailasa is the leader of the secondary, without a doubt. He's the senior man in our system with the most experience at his position, so we rely on him heavily to impact the game. The rust showed a bit, giving up a 42-yard completion to Matrail Lopez simply by going for the interception rather than the PBU, but he made up for it with a few stellar breakups and of course, the interception. Having him back there just raises the confidence level that our secondary can hold up in man coverage, on islands, and lets us get real creative up front with the blitz packages and you saw that today after eight more sacks."

Question Three: Jedidiah Evans (Cache Valley): "Coach, despite the egregious pressure rate and hits on CJ Tiller, he still managed to complete some big passes down the field and the Aggies were able to surprise your defense with an HB Draw late in the game that Adrian Droogsma broke for 74 yards. How do you differentiate when to be aggressive with the pass rush and when to let your players make their own plays?"

Armando Leon: "Droogsma's run was pure power; he broke what, seven tackles on that run? You have to applaud that kind of effort and while as a coach, I'm upset my team let him crank off that large of a run, you also have to understand that you can't win 'em all. It was a heck of a play. CJ had the one long pass play to Lopez that I already pointed out, the other chunk of his yardage was on checkdowns and screens, so there it's just being disciplined and trusting that what we saw on tape and studied all week is what we're seeing on the field. A few of those screens, we just took bad pursuit angles and the Aggies made us pay. But as far as balancing when to be aggressive? It's a lot harder for the quarterback to complete passes from his back, or while he's being driven to the turf, so that's the ultimate goal, Jedidiah."

•••

Regarding to Jedidiah's question about balancing the aggression, I think we all know what kind of play caller Coach Leon is at this point. He's going to bring the pressure, winning or losing, and see if you can handle the heat. He's already said he acknowledges his team is going to give up some big plays simply by circumstance, but you look at the stats and it's hard to say the end doesn't justify the means.

The Aggies had four plays go for 20 or more yards, with Nehem Washington scurrying for a 27-yard gain and Tyler Olson taking a 22-yard screen pass in addition to the two previously mentioned plays by Coach Leon. Only one of those resulted in touchdowns, while two more led to field goals. But on the flip side, the Beavers' defense tallied eight sacks, two turnovers— with one being returned for a touchdown—and put their own offense in favorable field position with the multitude of three-and-outs.

I know which I'd prefer. In the famous words of Marshawn Lynch: "We gonna get got, but we gonna get ours, more than we get got."

This time, we got ours.
