2031 Week Two Preview - Nebraska (0-0) vs. #1 Oklahoma (1-0)
Boone Tillman // Sooner BornPublished: September 7th, 2031

It may not have been the vulgar display of power Sooners' fans had hoped for, but regardless, Oklahoma extended their winning streak to 27 games with the close win in Las Vegas to kick off the 2031 campaign.

On deck, a rivalry showdown with the Nebraska Cornhuskers that has been decidedly one-sided in recent years. With this being the last scheduled year of the rivalry, we'll talk with Armando Leon about the future of the rivalry, when it's time to hang up the whistle, and more in the latest "Schooner Scoop."

Schooner Scoop

BT: "As the Sooners move to inch closer to their own wins record, the Nebraska Cornhuskers are on deck. What was once a historic rivalry has turned into a bit of a punching bag as of late, with Oklahoma outscoring Nebraska 105-35 over the past two contests. What do you think the University wants to see in what could be the last scheduled game between these two rivals to keep the rivalry ignited going into the future?"

AL: "They have to show us something, Boone. I think I speak for the whole program—we love playing these rivalry games. But, at some point you have to look at the product on the field. I've made it a point since arriving in Norman to have challenging, impactful non-conference games. This isn't Alabama or USC scheduling FCS schools or New Mexico State to open the season. We've got Oregon, Oklahoma State, and Miami. All ranked, or soon to be ranked, opponents. Then you have Nebraska looking like the odd-man out. One thing I've approached leadership about is transitioning the Nebraska rivalry game to a rotation of either ranked former Big 12 rivals, or scheduling more teams from the Big Ten. At the end of the day, I don't want a schedule where someone can point to a certain non-conference game and say "that's a cupcake." So, if Nebraska can't rise to that standard, we'll find someone else who will."

BT: "On the subject of Nebraska, one more question. Bill Belichick is approaching 80 years old. His impact since joining the college ranks has been marginal, at best, boasting a 44-34 career record. When do you think you'll know when it's time to hang up the whistle?"

AL: "First things first, Bill Belichick is a legendary NFL Coach. No debates there. He should have been a first-ballot Hall of Famer and the fact he had to wait until his 3rd year is ridiculous. But, his joining the college ranks felt like a gimmick at the time and still does seven years later. At some point, you have to look yourself in the mirror and say "what am I accomplishing?" Because all he is doing now is muddying his legacy. As for myself? I'll know it's time to go when it's becoming detrimental to my family, period. Family always comes first."

BT: "Final question. The defense looked up to snuff in their first game, aside from a few big plays for the Hurricanes. Offensively, a different story. Obviously, Nick's health is the key point. How is he feeling leading up to the rivalry game and if he's healthy, can we expect more explosive plays? 'Cause to be honest, it looked a lot like last year's offense where if guys didn't have space to do damage, we dinked and dunked down the field and prayed Butch could bail us out."

AL: "Let's not sit here and pretend Miami isn't a top-tier defense, either. We aren't going to face teams as physical and athletic as them very often. Nick is feeling great, his throwing shoulder looks good. I expect a much more spirited performance from him and the offense this week."

•••

Coach Leon is right; Nebraska is not Miami. That does nothing to ease my apprehension at the display we put on the field in Las Vegas. We had every right to lose that game, the only reason we didn't was the top-notch defense Pat Surtain Sr. and Leon put out on that field.

We won't need an improved performance from the offense to dispatch Nebraska. But we NEED to see an improved performance to renew the faith that this team can continue their march towards history.

I'm going to give them a mulligan and hope last week was a blip on the radar. If we continue to struggle, against NEBRASKA, then we've got to start thinking about sounding that alarm.

14 Nebraska, 45 Oklahoma.

Oklahoma Embarrasses Nebraska In Final Rivalry Game
Boone Tillman // Sooner BornPublished: September 8th, 2031

Armando Leon said before this rivalry contest with the Nebraska Cornhuskers that the Sooners' longtime rival needed to 'show them something' to earn the right to keep the rivalry alive.

Nebraska showed them something, alright; that they don't belong on the same field as the Sooners.

Oklahoma dismantled their longtime rival, shattering the highest scoring total of the contest in the 81-14 victory. The win also obliterated the largest margin of victory with 67 points, besting the previous record that Nebraska held of 62 points.

Oklahoma started off the game with a flurry. After a quick three-and-out by Ezekiel Hart, including the first of nine sacks absorbed by Huskers quarterbacks in the rain-soaked contest, Nickey wasted little time atoning for the struggles against Miami in Week 1, unleashing a 47-yard dart that sliced through the driving rain for the first of his record eight touchdowns in the contest.

A fumble on the kickoff was returned for a touchdown by Oklahoma and just like that, they were cruising.

Oklahoma hit a brief speed bump late in the 1st quarter when JC Barr dashed through the Sooners defense like a water bug for a 73-yard touchdown that followed by Nickey's lone mistake of the game, an interception.

The Sooners defense rose to the occasion, with Devin Coleman recording a sack, then an interception on the ensuing drive to end the Cornhuskers' final chance to claw back into the game.

The contest soon became a blowout as three straight touchdown drives late in the second quarter propelled the halftime lead to 42-7. It was more of the same after the half, when two more Nickey touchdowns were followed by a scoop-and-score by Fredrick Garbutt pushed the lead to 63-7. As fate would have it, the starters weren't done just yet.

Oklahoma had stretched the lead to 75-7 with less than two minutes remaining in the game, and rather than push their luck for more touchdowns, ran a trio of lackluster runs by Tyler Ryder, content to kick the final field goal and depart with a huge victory.

Instead of a meaningless field goal, Nebraska sent the house and blocked the would-be field goal, returning it 74-yards and pushing the Sooners back behind the record for largest margin of victory in the rivalry.

Coach Leon would have none of it, sending his first-team offense back onto the field to execute a flawless two-minute drill as Nickey found Maurice Lucky for the touchdown with zeros on the clock, snatching the record back with no time to spare.

Bill Belichick refused to meet Armando Leon at midfield, leaving his team on the field to congratulate the Sooners while he slunk into the locker room.

Question One - James McDavid (OU Daily): "I think it's safe to say; the offense is okay after that performance. Even in a downpour, Markelle Nickey had a record-setting day. Was that the plan for this week, silence the doubters and restore faith in Nick?"

Armando Leon: "The plan was to win. Maybe it was their game plan, maybe it was the weather, but the Cornhuskers came in determined to stop the run, and in turn, got bombed worse than England in World War Two. The only mistake wasn't even his fault, really. He got hit mid-throw and the intended screen pass sailed to the trailing corner. Realistically, that's a ball you don't want him to try and fire out before getting hit, but after eight touchdowns, I ain't gonna berate him too much over it."

Question Two - Scott Fieldson (Daily Nebraskan): "What do you think the mindset was for Coach Belichick to not take the field for the customary handshake after the game. Do you think it was the overall defeat, or distaste about your starters returning to the game for the final drive?"

Armando Leon: "Frankly, I don't care. Could be my comments before the game. Whichever way you slice it, he's acting like a petulant old man, more evidence it's time to hang it up. I pulled my starters midway through the third quarter. You know why they went back in? 'Cause Bill got cute and sent an all-out blitz on a measly field goal with 1:23 left. He wants to play all out for a full game, cool. But don't cry foul when it blows up in your face."

Question Three - Meg Semental (SEC Network): "Let's talk about Tyler Ryder for a minute, Coach. Dillon Slye was banged up throughout the game and didn't contribute much, same for Isaac Adcock in the second half. Then Ryder comes in and tears the Cornhuskers' defense to shreds. What does it say about a young-] back to be able to step in and dominate like that?"

Armando Leon: "I'm happy for Ty, truly. He got some opportunities the last game against Miami and really wanted to make a statement against a school he felt "under-appreciated" by, but only got six-yards on six-carries. We talked a lot this week about not dwelling on mistakes, or trying to get it all back in one play. You see the impact he had tonight; he doesn't do that if he's still dwelling on that game. That's what impressed me the most, the maturity to flush a bad game and get 'em the next time."

I said Markelle Nickey had to show me something and Armando Leon said Nebraska had to show him something. I think we both got the answers we were looking for, at least for tonight.

As I said in the lead-up, Nebraska ain't Miami. But to go out there and absolutely filet a defense, that's impressive. I frankly don't give a damn about the last-minute touchdown for the record, or Grumpy Bill's anger over how it went down. You want to get chippy on special teams, you gotta be able to take the rebuttal.

I understand we likely aren't going to see an effort like this every game, but if they can even meet me in the middle, I think I speak for every Sooner fan, we'll be happier than a pig in shit.
