Bulls Stampede Owls for Second Straight Conference Title

Tampa, Florida - South Florida spent most of Saturday proving why it has been one of the nation's most explosive teams all season.

Then, just for good measure, the Bulls delivered one final reminder.

Behind another masterful performance from quarterback Locklan Hewlett and a dominant offensive effort that produced 674 yards, No. 5 USF defeated Florida Atlantic 52-27 Saturday afternoon to capture the American Athletic Conference Championship.

The victory secured another conference title for DJ Porter's program and likely locked the Bulls into a favorable position as playoff selections approach.

"It feels incredible," Porter said. "These guys earned this. They've worked for this all year. We played one of the best teams in this conference today and responded exactly the way champions are supposed to respond."

FAU struck first with a Mike Hood field goal and trailed only 7-6 midway through the second quarter. From there, however, the Bulls completely seized control.

Connor Suggs scored on a 14-yard touchdown run before Hewlett added a one-yard quarterback sneak to extend the lead. After forcing another stop, Hewlett found Cam Deablo for a 28-yard touchdown strike late in the half before Dom Bragg drilled a field goal as time expired.

What had been a one-point game quickly became a 31-6 halftime advantage.

The Bulls never looked back.

Suggs opened the second half with another touchdown run, capping a 137-yard, two-touchdown afternoon. Steven Snead added 40 rushing yards and a touchdown while the USF ground game piled up 238 yards and five scores overall.

As impressive as the rushing attack was, the day belonged to Hewlett.

The junior completed 24 of 31 passes for 385 yards and a touchdown while adding another score on the ground. He consistently dissected the FAU secondary, finding openings at every level of the field and keeping the Owls' defense off balance from start to finish.

Leading receiver Lyle Dragos hauled in nine receptions for 147 yards while Lamar Sweet added seven catches for 110 yards. Gerald Camarda contributed 71 yards and a touchdown, while Deablo added a touchdown reception of his own.

One teammate joked afterward that Hewlett's only mistake all afternoon came after his rushing touchdown.

"Perfect game," Daryl Treadwell laughed while walking through the locker room. "Absolutely perfect game. Except that was the worst griddy I've ever seen."

Even Hewlett couldn't keep a straight face when asked about it.

"I've heard about it enough already," he said. "I probably won't be doing that again."

Defensively, the Bulls delivered several critical plays whenever FAU threatened to build momentum.

Nick Jones and Armon Chambers each intercepted FAU quarterback Keke Jewel, helping USF finish plus-two in turnovers. Brian Royer added a sack while Jones and Sidney James led the team with eight tackles apiece.

The Owls mounted a late push in the fourth quarter, scoring three touchdowns and trimming what had once been a 38-point deficit down to 45-27 with 1:21 remaining.

Then came the game's most debated moment.

Rather than simply kneel out the clock, backup quarterback Joshua Brantley dropped back and found Camarda streaking down the sideline for a 46-yard touchdown with eleven seconds remaining, pushing the final margin to 52-27.

When asked afterward about the late score, Porter offered a grin.

"Well," Porter said, smiling, "we felt like FAU got a little too excited after they cut it to 45-27 with just over a minute left. We didn't want them stealing the momentum."

The room erupted in laughter.

"Look, they're a good football team. Coach Sanders did a great job with that program this year. But our job is to play football until the clock hits zero."

The numbers reflected just how overwhelming the Bulls were.

USF finished with 34 first downs, 674 yards of offense, 9.4 yards per play, and did not punt a single time. The Bulls converted 60 percent of their third downs and scored six touchdowns in seven red-zone trips.

FAU managed 330 yards of offense and 15 first downs but spent most of the afternoon chasing a USF offense that seemed capable of scoring whenever it wanted.

For a team that entered the season with championship aspirations, Saturday served as validation.

The Bulls didn't simply win the American Athletic Conference.

They dominated it.

And now, with a conference championship trophy secured and a 12-win season in hand, South Florida's attention turns toward an even bigger prize waiting on the horizon.

Offense
–USF captured the American Conference Championship on Saturday afternoon with a convincing 52-27 victory over Florida Atlantic in Tampa.
–The Bulls delivered one of their most complete offensive performances of the season, piling up 674 total yards, 34 first downs, and 9.4 yards per play.
–Locklan Hewlett was spectacular, completing 24-of-31 passes for 385 yards and a touchdown while adding a rushing score.
–Connor Suggs rushed for 137 yards and two touchdowns on 19 carries as the Bulls accumulated 238 rushing yards and five rushing touchdowns.
–Lyle Dragos led all receivers with nine catches for 147 yards, while Logan Sweet added seven receptions for 110 yards.
