Bulls Roll Past USC, Punch Ticket to Natty

Pasadena, California - The Rose Bowl is often remembered for explosive offenses and unforgettable individual performances. Last night belonged to a defense.

Fifth-ranked USF methodically dismantled No. 8 USC 31-14 in the College Football Playoff Semifinal, turning one of college football's most explosive offenses into little more than a spectator for most of the evening. The Bulls will now play for a national championship after one of their most complete performances of the season.

The final score showed a comfortable 17-point margin. The flow of the game was even more one-sided.

USF held USC scoreless for nearly 53 minutes, limiting the Trojans to just seven first downs and only 229 yards of total offense while forcing an interception and repeatedly sending Lincoln Riley's offense back to the sideline after short possessions. Defensive coordinator Tony White's unit didn't overwhelm USC with sacks or splash plays. Instead, it did something arguably more impressive: it made the Trojans earn absolutely everything.

White mixed pressures, disguised coverages, simulated blitzes and used multiple fronts throughout the night, never allowing USC quarterback Bob McElrath to settle into any sort of rhythm. The Trojans managed just three third-down conversions, ran only 34 offensive plays, and never found an answer for the constantly changing defensive looks.

Every possession seemed to end the same way—another USC punt or another drive that stalled well before becoming a threat.

The result was a staggering disparity in possession that allowed USF's offense to completely dictate the tempo.

While the defense suffocated USC, the offense quietly put together one of its most efficient outings of the season.

The Bulls piled up 30 first downs and 458 yards of offense while running 66 plays, nearly doubling USC's offensive snaps. Quarterback Locklan Hewlett completed 24 of 33 passes for 264 yards and a touchdown, consistently moving the chains with short and intermediate throws before handing the ball to Connor Suggs to finish drives.

Hewlett set a new single season passing yardage for the American Conference in the process.

Suggs once again proved why he's become one of the nation's premier backs.

The All-American rushed 21 times for 160 yards and three touchdowns while adding four receptions for 35 yards. His three scoring runs of three, five and five yards capped long, clock-draining drives that repeatedly broke USC's spirit.

Suggs also broke the USF career rushing touchdowns record.

Gerald Camarda added five receptions for 50 yards, including an impressive one-yard touchdown catch late in the second quarter, while Luka Dragos led all receivers with seven catches for 76 yards.

USF established control early.

Suggs opened the scoring with a three-yard touchdown run midway through the first quarter before Dom Bragg extended the lead with a 43-yard field goal early in the second. Hewlett later capped another lengthy possession with a one-yard touchdown pass to Camarda, sending the Bulls into halftime with a commanding 17-0 advantage.

Any thoughts of a Trojan comeback disappeared early in the third quarter.

Suggs punched in his second touchdown of the evening from five yards out to make it 24-0, and USC remained without a point entering the fourth quarter.

The Trojans finally broke through on a one-yard touchdown run by Paul Kamara with 7:58 remaining, but USF answered exactly how it had all night—with another long, physical scoring drive.

Suggs finished it himself with his third touchdown run of the game, restoring a 31-8 lead while consuming more valuable clock.

USC added a late touchdown pass from McElrath to Miles Biakabutuka in the final two minutes, but by then the outcome had long since been decided.

Defensively, Gavin Jenkins recorded the game's only interception, while Armon Chambers led the Bulls with four tackles. Greg DeMorat added three stops as the defensive front and secondary combined to produce one of the most disciplined performances of the postseason.

The stat sheet perfectly illustrated the dominance.

USF outgained USC 458-229, finished with 30 first downs to the Trojans' seven, converted 72 percent of its third downs, and committed zero turnovers. The Bulls reached the red zone four times and scored on every trip, while USC crossed into scoring position just twice all night.

Perhaps the most remarkable number wasn't the yardage or the score.

It was 34.

That's how many offensive plays Tony White's defense allowed one of the nation's most talented offenses to run in a College Football Playoff semifinal.

For a unit that has steadily improved throughout the season, last night may have been its masterpiece.

And with one final game remaining, the Bulls are now just 60 minutes away from bringing the first national championship in program history back to Tampa.

USF POSTGAME REPORT

#5 USF 31 – #8 USC 14

Offense
–USF advanced to the College Football Playoff National Championship Game with a commanding 31-14 victory over USC in the Rose Bowl.
–The Bulls controlled the game from the opening drive, piling up 476 total yards, 30 first downs and holding the ball for nearly three times as long as the Trojans.
–Locklan Hewlett completed 24-of-33 passes for 264 yards and a touchdown while setting a new American Conference single-season passing yardage record.
–Connor Suggs delivered another dominant postseason performance, rushing 21 times for 160 yards and three touchdowns while adding four receptions for 35 yards.
–Suggs' third touchdown of the night established a new USF career rushing touchdown record.
–Gerald Camarda caught five passes for 50 yards, including a one-yard touchdown reception late in the second quarter.

Defense
–Tony White's defense authored one of its finest performances of the season, holding USC scoreless until the fourth quarter.
–The Bulls limited one of the nation's most explosive offenses to just seven first downs and 229 total yards.
–USC managed only 34 offensive snaps while converting just 3-of-8 third-down attempts.
–White mixed blitz packages, simulated pressures and disguised coverages throughout the evening, never allowing quarterback Bob McElrath to establish a rhythm.
–Gavin Jenkins intercepted McElrath in the second half, finishing as the only takeaway of the game.
–Armon Chambers led the defense with four tackles while Greg DeMorat added three stops.
–The Trojans were held to just 108 passing yards through the air until a pair of late fourth-quarter scoring drives after the outcome had largely been decided.
“Tony (White) was phenomenal tonight. We gave them a lot of different pictures before and after the snap. Our guys trusted the plan and executed it exactly the way we wanted,” Porter said. “When you hold a team like USC to seven first downs, that's a complete defensive performance.”

Special Teams
–Dom Bragg connected on a 43-yard field goal and converted all four extra-point attempts.
–Bragg's second-quarter field goal extended the early lead before the Bulls eventually pulled away.
–USF totaled 18 return yards on special teams while committing just two penalties for 20 yards.
–USC punter Wyatt Weisberg averaged 45.7 yards on three punts as the Trojan defense repeatedly found itself backed into difficult field position.
