Cardinal trade blows with Clemson as they land one prospect and lose out on another
Chris Wallace -- 247Sports Stanford Football Insider

Two former ACC foes went to war on the field this weekend with Miami getting the best of Stanford while on the recruiting trail, Stanford drew with Clemson as the Tigers landed offensive tackle Cooper Matakevich and Stanford finally landed a cornerback in four-star Tracey Winton.

Winton is the highest ranked player in the class as a top-50 recruit and picked Stanford over Oregon and Clemson, landing a huge win on the trail against premier programs. The lack of plus-size for the position and top-end speed is likely what is keeping Winton from being a five-star prospect as he checks nearly every other box. He plays physical at the line of scrimmage in coverage and is a willing and able tackler, even when outmatched physically.

Where Winston really shines is reading route patterns and being decisive when breaking on the football. He primarily plays on the boundary at the high school level but the lack of length could see him play nickel for the Cardinal which is a marquee position in this defense.

The Matekevich loss is a big one as he was the top player on Stanford's board this season and they felt good about being able to pull in another top ranked offensive tackle. Ultimately, Matakevich chose to stay closer to home.

Stanford rises to No. 11 in class rankings with additions of a pair of tight ends
Chris Wallace -- 247Sports Stanford Football Insider

Stanford is reloading their tight end room after failing to sign a tight end in last year's class, adding their second and third tight end to the class in three-stars Broderick Conklin and Dominick Bryant.

Both are more of your prototypical tight ends after Stanford had landed a commitment from hybrid athlete Marcus Mangold, who is listed at six-foot-one. Bryant and Conklin are six-four and six-three respectively with Bryant being the bigger of the two at 254 pounds.

The physical attributes for Bryant are clear with his size and athleticism as well as natural pass catching ability. He does need to work on his physicality, especially in the running game as his play strength doesn't always match up with his imposing frame.

Conklin is the better blocker of the two but not as good of an athlete as Bryant or Mangold. He's your traditional in-line tight end that will mostly do the dirty work but has enough functional athleticism to leak out into the flats as a pass catching option.

The commitments bring Stanford's class to No. 11 in the rankings with twelve prospects committed.

Stanford rout SMU with dominant first half performance
Stanford and SMU had some classic battles in their brief shared experience in the ACC. Saturday afternoon wasn't one of them.

The Cardinal went up 21-3 early in the second quarter and never looked back, routing SMU 56-20 in Dallas to respond to last week's loss to another former ACC foe in convincing fashion.

Stanford quarterback Earl Nienhuis tossed a pair of touchdowns in the first half, including a 42-yard completion to Rodney Cookus. Cookus finished the game with four receptions for 92 yards despite only playing a half. Nienhius finished with 327 yards passing on 79 percent completion rate and played up until the fourth quarter where both teams pulled their starters.

Anthony Masifilo, last year's star of the playoffs, returned to form with 122 yards on twenty-one carries as he saw a huge increase in his workload following a first injury to Rashawn Crouse. Sophomore Malik Marshal also rushed for 122 yards and two scores with Trevon Winbush adding another two touchdowns on the ground.
