Texas State QB Brad Jackson confirms return for redshirt junior season

Texas State quarterback Brad Jackson has committed to returning for his redshirt junior season, the school confirmed via a social media post in a very 2027 college football moment, putting to rest speculation that he might follow former head coach G.J. Kinne to Mississippi State.

Jackson, an All-Pac-12 selection last season, threw for 3,812 yards, 17 touchdowns and six interceptions on 61% completion while adding 657 rushing yards and 12 more touchdowns on the ground.

Rumors of a potential move to Starkville picked up steam after Kinne's departure for Mississippi State, but those speculation cooled even as Bulldogs quarterback Kamario Taylor entered the transfer portal. Jackson never entered the portal himself and is expected to be back under center for new head coach Mark Carney and offensive coordinator Jaleel Mosley this fall.

Jackson's return comes as Texas State navigates significant turnover at the skill positions. Leading receiver Kylen Evans, who caught 77 passes for 1,054 yards and nine touchdowns last season, has entered the transfer portal. Jackson's next two top targets, Chris Dawn Jr. (67 receptions, 1,047 yards, 5 touchdowns) and Beau Sparks (76 receptions, 860 yards, 2 touchdowns), are both out of eligibility.

Texas State has also seen several other significant departures via the transfer portal, including linebacker Javante Mackey, running backs Torrance Burgess Jr. and Taji Atkins, defensive tackle Kaleb James, and edge rusher Ta'Darius Collins.

Despite the losses at receiver, Jackson's return gives Mosley a proven, dual-threat quarterback around which to build his first offense in San Marcos.

SAN MARCOS, Texas — Texas State Head Football Coach Mark Carney today announced the addition of several coaches to the Bobcat staff, joining offensive coordinator Jaleel Mosley and defensive coordinator Jess Loepp as Carney builds out his first full coaching staff in San Marcos.

Dave Bucar
Bucar joins the Bobcats as tight ends coach after one season at Kent State under Carney. He brings more than a decade of collegiate coaching experience across multiple levels of college football.

Before Kent State, Bucar spent the 2025 season at UAlbany as offensive line coach. Prior to that, he spent two seasons at Maine, joining the Black Bears' staff in the summer of 2023 as offensive line coach before adding run game coordinator duties in March 2024.

Bill O'Boyle
O'Boyle joins Texas State as offensive line coach and run game coordinator after eight seasons at Kent State, where he served as assistant head coach for offense in addition to his line duties.

O'Boyle joined the Golden Flashes in January 2018 and quickly established one of the league's most consistent offensive lines. In 2021, offensive linemen Bill Kuduk and Nathan Monnin earned All-MAC honors for the second consecutive year, helping anchor an offense that ranked fourth nationally in total offense and third nationally in rushing offense. That line opened running lanes for Marquez Cooper and Xavier Williams, who combined for more than 2,000 rushing yards that season.

DeShawn Ridley
Ridley joins the Bobcats as receivers coach after two seasons as an offensive quality control assistant at Colorado State and worked with Mosley last season as receiver's coach at UL Monroe.

Trent Calloway
Calloway joins the running backs room after a season at UL Monroe and four seasons at Sam Houston, where he helped the Bearkats average over 190 rushing yards per game across his tenure. Before Sam Houston, Calloway spent three seasons (2019-2021) as running backs coach at Incarnate Word, working alongside Mosley.

Gant joins Texas State as linebackers coach after serving in the same role at Kent State.

Nick Graham
Graham joins the Bobcats as cornerbacks coach after serving as assistant head coach and cornerbacks coach at UTSA, reuniting with Loepp on Carney's new defensive staff.

Teerlinck joins Texas State as defensive line coach after serving in the same role at Kent State.
