Social media antics or potential Bat Signal? Former FSU running back Kam Davis hints at a return to his home state
KingHootMan -- KSUOwlHowl.com Football Contributor

Former Florida State running back Kam Davis, who is originally from Albany, Georgia, entered the transfer portal after he saw his role reduced to just nine carries on the season during his redshirt junior campaign with the Seminoles in what would prove to be Mike Norvell's final season. It was Davis' social media activity, however, that has captured the attention of Owls fan.

Davis, seemingly for no reason, retweeted a post that linked to an article on the social media platform 'X' regarding head coach Bubba Mack's return to Kennesaw State. On the surface, it's only a retweet but what other reason would Davis, who isn't even from Kennesaw and has seemingly no relations with Mack or the school, would retweet the post?

The five-foot-ten and 218 pound bruiser would be an instant impact player for the Owls despite them returning a 1,000-yard rusher in Kyshon Franklin Jr. who finished second in the team in carries behind D.J. Scott, who is also returning. Despite this, Mack has always spoken about raising the level of talent across the board throughout the roster and Davis, a former top-150 recruit, would certainly be an example of that.

The Owls are expected to be big plays in the transfer portal market once more as they signed only four players from high school back in December. Last winter, they signed twenty-one portal players, including several key starters such as tight end Everett Hunter, receivers Eric Weatherly and K.J. Parker and nearly the entire secondary in cornerbacks Zion Armstead and Markese Moon as well as safeties Deon McKinley and T.J. McGill.

KSU has major needs along the offensive and defensive line that will likely be addressed in the portal and could also look to replace the graduating Donelius Johnson at linebacker as well as improve the receiver room which is losing a few starters in seniors Davis Bryson and Weatherly.

Kennesaw State? Yes, Kennesaw State lands the nation's second highest ranked portal class amidst recruiting criticism

KENNESAW, Ga. -- In his second full recruiting cycle, Kennesaw State head coach Bubba Mack has certainly answered any and all questions regarding his recruiting tactics, signing the highest ranked transfer portal class in the conference and the second highest ranked portal class in the country. The Owls high school recruiting class finished ranked 50th in the country and the top class in the conference with more three-star signees (11) than the rest of the conference combined (9).

A year removed from signing twenty-one transfers, the Owls landed twenty transfers this cycle, including two four-stars at the running back position in veteran Kam Davis, formerly of Florida State, and former top-50 recruit Greg Burrell who entered the portal after just one season at USC.

Burrell was a top twenty ranked player in the portal while Davis was ranked thirty-fourth with the Owls also signing another running back in Louisville's Jamarice Wilder as KSU has clearly committed to improving the running back room. This shakeup of the room certainly makes things interesting for returning starters Kyshon Franklin Jr. and D.J. Scott who as of today, remain on the roster. Another interesting addition was quarterback Ethan Houck, who saw some garbage time duty for FIU this past season when they played Kennesaw State, throwing for 70 yards on six pass attempts and is expected to be Skyler Williams' backup this upcoming season.

While the bulk of the additions came from the portal, the Owls also had a strong finish to their high school recruiting class, adding Miami's Rudy Starks and Fort Lauderdale's Elias Castro to bolster their depth at defensive end while also adding another arm to the quarterback room in Jose Montague.

KSU signed an interesting mix of both productive G6 players with a year or two of eligibility remaining such as Middle Tennessee State receiver Cam'ron Lacy and NIU's Corri Milliner
Two seasons ago, the Owls played Lacy and he had eight receptions for 83 yards and a touchdown. Last year in the Sun Belt, Lacy had 601 receiving yards. They also brought in some defensive help in Bowling Green cornerback Terhyon Nichols, who had two interceptions and seven pass breakups for the Falcons.

The highest ranked portal players, however, are the "Power 4 rejects" in Burrell, Davis, Wilder and guys like edge rusher Jaxon Howard who were highly ranked recruits at one point. During his availability with the media following Signing Day, Mack stressed the importance of balancing production and potential in the transfer portal.

"You don't want a bunch of guys that are unproven and trying to find their way," Mack said, "But on the flip side, you also don't want a roster with fifty seniors. You need to find that balance on bringing in guys that you know what they are and guys that are wildcards, that might end up being your best player or just another guy on your roster depending on how things shake out. Those are the guys that stress your ability as a coach and that's something I'm never going to run from."

With such a large recruiting class, signing thirty-two total players, Mack said he expects to see some departures from the roster as part of the "natural attrition process".

It's beginning to look the part at Kennesaw State and for head coach
Bubba Mack, that was half of the battle

By Bernie Flowers
May 19, 2027

"Y'all too big to be running away from each other. At some point, y'all gonna have to bump and I'm going to be here to see it."

Kennesaw State head coach Bubba Mack issued this challenge to former Florida State running back Kam Davis (218 pounds) and former Florida/Virginia linebacker Myles Graham (232 pounds) after the third padded practice of spring football. Davis and Graham were two of the higher ranked transfer portal additions in the Owls' much heralded and bandied about transfer portal class, which finished atop the conference and one of the highest ranked in the country.

As impressive looking as Davis and Graham certainly are, a few years ago, prior to Mack's arrival, their physique would have stood out like a sore thumb. Now, in his own running back room, there's also the 210-pound Greg Burrell, one of the highest ranked players in the portal after an odd stint at USC. There aren't many better looking tight ends in the conference than another former Trojan in six-foot-six, 274 pound Walter Matthews, now at Kennesaw State. Edge rushers Jaxon Howard and Cole Cogshell, both portal additions, are in the six-four, 240 pound range after transferring from their respective Big Ten programs. Robby Harrison is a rocked up, athletic looking 300-pounder at defensive tackle with Big Ten experience as well, having previously played at Indiana prior to his stops at Western Kentucky and Georgia Southern.

Even the high school additions are looking different in second-year linebacker Quincy Hewitt, who the team briefly considered moving to defensive end as a testament to his athletic profile at six-foot-three and 232 pounds. They've got a couple of 200-pounders in the secondary in Terhyon Nichols, Zion Armstead, Ethan Tookes, Markese Moon and Tevin Cameron.

"We've got some impressive body types," Mack said of the roster transformation that he's overseen since taking over in 2025, "We've got to start turning that into wins and championships but the first step was making sure we look the right way and have the right athletes playing for us."

The roster overhaul has been massive under Mack and it was evident in the spring game. Outside of quarterback Skyler Williams, who was a holdover from the previous regime's incoming recruiting class, it was nearly entire new faces on both sides of the field. The top three running backs seem to Davis, Burrell and Louisville transfer Jamarice Wilder, all new additions.

The best receiver at the spring game was Corri Milliner, the six-foot-two speedster from Northern Illinois. The other impressive body types at receiver? Sophomore Hasheem Nwokeji (6'4", 194 pounds) and true freshman Sean Branson (6'2", 212lbs) with incoming true freshman Juan Snead, who will arrive in the fall being all of his reported six-foot-five as he stood on the sideline. All Mack guys. The previous regime's receivers still on the roster are Javon Rogers (six-foot, 174) and Navelle Dean (six-foot, 186).

With the change in roster comes changes in expectations as many will not only be expecting the Owls to make it back to the Conference USA Championship Game but win it this time, especially with the changes at Liberty that saw head coach Jamey Chaldwell head to Arkansas. The conference is wide open and no team is better equipped to fill that void than the Owls, thanks to recruiting progress under Mack. They just now need to translate those recruiting victories into on-field ones.

Kennesaw State Football Preview 2027: Revamped Kennesaw State are primed to potentially dominate the conference
2026 Kennesaw State season preview. After a rough start in the FBS, the Owls reached bowl eligibility in their second year. Are they ready for that next step?

Outside of Western Kentucky, who signed an impressive high school recruiting class, it's hard to pinpoint a Conference USA team that not only that got better in the offseason but didn't get worse. Except for one team who got exponentially better and that's the Kennesaw State Owls who signed the second best transfer portal class in the country and the top recruiting class in the conference. This is on top of bringing back most of their team from last season that finished second in the conference.

Kennesaw State Owls Preview 2027: Offense

- The Owls are primed to run the football after bringing in three of the portal's best available running backs in Kam Davis (Florida State), Greg Burrell (USC) and Kamari Wilder (Louisville) who would all individually start on just about every other team in the conference. The running back room is loaded for the Owls and that's without mentioning Kyshon Franklin Jr. who rushed for over 1,000 yards last season and D.J. Scott who led the team in rushing.

- The sky is the limit for Skyler Williams as he broke school records during his first year as a starter behind an okay offensive line at best and limited skill weapons. With an improved line up front and more vertical speed on the outside, Williams could be due for another big year at the helm as the aforementioned running game should really open up the effectiveness of the Owls' RPO offense which was their bread and butter last year.

- Who emerges as WR1? The Owls brought in a 1,000-yard receiver last year from the portal in Eric Weatherly but the connection was just never there between him and Williams and he was a bit wrongly casted to play on the outside. Even with the passing game's success, there was a lot of yards and big plays left on the table in the vertical passing game and the Owls will look to improve upon that this season with a few interesting additions in Cam'ron Lacy, a vertical threat from the slot, and Corri Milliner, the transfer from Northern Illinois who is your traditional flanker.

Kennesaw State Owls Preview 2027: Defense
- The Owls seem to have found their Donelius Johnson replacement in former Florida and Virginia linebacker Myles Graham who has been a standout throughout spring and the summer. Despite missing several games last year, Johnson led the team in tackles and tackles for loss and while it might take a game or two for Graham to settle into his role as the leader and signal caller of the defense, his physical traits are even more impressive than Johnson and he could be fighting for a chance to be drafted with his play this fall.

- It's an impressive looking defensive front led by Jaxon Howard, the Minnesota/Iowa State transfer at EDGE and defensive tackle Robby Harrison and Jaiden Grimes. It's a senior laden unit with a few intriguing sophomores and freshmen sprinkled in which should honestly dominate the C-USA level and hold up well against the likes of Indiana.

- Two years after losing JeRico Washington Jr, the Owls may found another NFL bound corner in Terhyon Nichols. Nichols was a top-200 recruit coming out of high school that signed with Kentucky before transferring to Bowling Green where he had two interceptions and seven pass breakups as one of the better MAC cornerbacks. Nichols briefly considered a return to the P4 level before signing with the Owls this past offseason and could play his way into the NFL with a very good season.

Kennesaw State Owls Key to the Season
Get some explosive plays from the offense.
As great as Williams was last year, he averaged seven yards per attempt and a lot of the offense was centered around screens and the quick passing game. The only downside was when that didn't work, especially when teams played press man and didn't give the receivers any cushion, they could create any cushion and drives would stall out. With some added speed at running back and receiver, this offense needs to be a lot more explosive and start blowing teams out of games instead of relying on fourth quarter heroics.

Kennesaw State Owls Key Player
Walter Matthews, TE RJr.
The Georgia native returns home where he was a top-190 recruit and has impressive size at six-foot-six and 275 pounds. Tyrone Hoyt caught 66 passes last year and Matthews is a way more gifted athlete than Hoyt so his production, coupled with Hoyt as the Owls played a lot of two tight end sets last year, should help make this one of the better pairings in the conference and frankly at the G6 level as a whole.

Kennesaw State Owls Top Transfer, Biggest Transfer Loss
Top Transfer In: Kam Davis, HB Sr.
Mack has spoken glowingly of Davis and with good reason as he chose the Owls over Auburn during his recruitment. While Davis doesn't have the most production, having been a backup at Florida State, he did play some in 2025 and averaged 5.8 yards per carry and nine touchdowns. He saw a major dip in involvement in Mike Norvell's final season, clearly failing out a favor with the coaching staff and carrying the ball just nine times. With his first opportunity as the lead guy, Davis could be in for a major breakout season.

Top Transfer Out: Kris Carruthers, DT RJr
The pit stop at Kennesaw State, following his tenure at Marshall, was a productive one for Carruthers who had ten tackles for loss and was courted by several programs before signing with USF. He's projected to be their starting defensive tackle. Still, unlike other C-USA programs that lost starters, KSU replaced him with Robby Harrison which could be considered an upgrade and then got a redshirt sophomore in Keyvonne King out of NC State to back Harrison and Jaiden Grimes up front.

Kennesaw State Owls Key Game
at Liberty, Week 7
This has the potential to be a real passing-of-the-baton moment for the Owls if they're able to travel to Lynchburg and not just beat the Flames, who they failed to do twice last season, but rout them in front of their own fans.

Kennesaw State Owls Top 10 Players
1. Kam Davis, RB Sr.
2. Terhyon Nichols, CB Sr.
3. Jaiden Grimes, IDL Sr.
4. Robby Harrison, IDL Rs Sr.
5. Skyler Williams, QB Rs Soph.
6. Myles Graham, LB Sr.
7. Chase Stevens, G Rs Jr.
8. Corri Milliner, WR Rs Sr.
9. Cam'ron Lacy, WR Rs Sr.
10. Jaxon Howard, EDGE Rs Sr.

Kennesaw State Owls Schedule (2026 Record)
vs. Georgia Southern (3-9, 2-6)
at #15 Indiana (10-3, 7-2)
at Delaware (3-9, 2-6)
at Louisiana (8-5, 4-4)
at Missouri State (3-9, 3-5)
vs. Western Kentucky (5-7, 3-5)
at Liberty (11-3, 7-1)
vs. Jax State (8-5, 5-3)
at UAB (5-7, 4-4)
vs. Sam Houston (5-7, 3-5)
vs. Middle Tennessee (5-7, 4-4)
at FIU (3-9, 1-7)

Kennesaw State Owls 2027 Season Prediction, Win Total, What Will Happen
This is the most talented team that Mack has had at Kennesaw State by a pretty wide margin. They won nine games last year without great receivers, a shaky offensive line and an unproven secondary; all areas they improved upon in the offseason.

It's a tougher out of conference schedule with their P4 opponent being a ranked Indiana, which they played tough two seasons ago. They also have tough road games to UAB and Louisiana. If they can split that along with their other 50/50 games and then win the rest of their winnable games, a nine win season isn't out of the cards for the Owls but the true measuring stick will be making it back to the conference championship game and winning it.

Set The Kennesaw State Win Total At … 8.5

Likely Wins: Georgia Southern, at Delaware, at Missouri State, Sam Houston, Middle Tennessee, at FIU

50/50 Games: at Louisiana, vs. Western Kentucky, at Liberty, vs. Jacksonville State, at UAB

Likely Losses: at Indiana

Newcomers litter opening day depth chart as Owls release first official two-deep of the season
KingHootMan -- KSUOwlHowl.com Football Contributor

Despite returning the bulk of last year's Conference USA runner up team, Kennesaw State's first official depth chart of the season appears to be a brand new team with plenty of transfers taking up the starting spot. The most notable facelift is at running back where last year's co-starters Kyshon Franklin Jr. and D.J. Scott are not listed as starters with Scott not being listed at all on the two-deep.

It's a new look offensive line with returning starters Chase Stephens and Nikola Milovic making the move from guard to center and left tackle to guard respectively. Other notables include the secondary, despite returning nearly every starter, only featuring a single returner in the starting lineup with Zion Armstead sliding to the nickel. Ethan Tookes and Markese Moon, who earned all-conference honors, were not listed on the two deep. Instead, it featured two transfers in Terhyon Nichols and Miles Kyle as the top two corners and true freshman Sean Branson as a backup.

Branson, a three-star recruit, is listed both at receiver and cornerback and is expected to be a two-way player for the Owls this season.

he had nine TDs the year before, not sure what happened. if they did recruit someone over him, they didn't jack shit either because they were sorry last year
