yeah the score doesn't reflect how close of a game it really was BUT our two best players (St. Clair and Gaines) were also limited

Stanford head coach Bubba Mack provides injury update on Tavien St. Clair, Sire Gaines
Chris Wallace -- 247Sports Stanford Football Insider

Three games into his tenure as Stanford's head coach, Bubba Mack has landed a top-10 road victory and is one win away from surpassing last year's win total. The Tar Heels were not only the Cardinal's biggest challenge thus far but they also had to deal with their first cross country road trip and two of their best players in quarterback Tavien St. Clair and running back Sire Gaines dealing with injuries.

St. Clair played the entire game while Gaines only played 12 of the 67 offensive snaps, carrying the ball five times for 36 yards and a touchdown as he nursed what Mack described as a "lower leg deal". Mack said he expects Gaines to be a "full participant" this week against Clemson while adding that St. Clair's injury, which has been reported as a bruised rib, is something that both the team and St. Clair will have to manage.

"I think he's doing a good job of navigating through it," Mack said on Monday, "There isn't some magic formula that's going to [heal the injury] so we'll just have to manage it as a coaching staff and he'll need to be aware of it as well."

The Cardinal host No. 1 Clemson this weekend as they enter a pivotal stretch of their season where they are currently scheduled to play five consecutive opponents ranked inside the AP's Top 20, including No. 12 Miami and No. 6 Notre Dame following next week's bye.
