As it turned out, the door closed on them at home. Nebraska and Georgia each rescinded the scholarships after landing other transfer athletes to fill the same positions. In separate statements, both programs chalked it up to “miscommunication” and roster limitations.

CFP, ACC, and Coastal Carolina Issue Joint Discipline of Vaughn After Postgame Comments

Image

Conway, SC. - The fallout from Kade Vaughn’s fiery postgame comments in the wake of Coastal Carolina’s controversial College Football Playoff loss has finally reached a conclusion — and it will cost the Chanticleers their head coach to start the 2032 season.

In a joint statement released this summer, the CFP, the ACC, and Coastal Carolina announced that Vaughn has been suspended for the first two games of the season, fined $50,000, and will be required to issue a formal public apology before returning to the sidelines.

Coastal Carolina announced that defensive coordinator Tony White would be the interim head coach in Vaughn's absence, while Vaughn would be eligible to participate in practice and game planning during the suspension.

The discipline stems from Vaughn’s sharp postgame remarks, where he opened his press conference by asking for the Vegas line and suggesting officials had it in mind during the string of disputed calls that sealed Coastal’s playoff exit.

Sources close to the process indicate that the ACC pushed hard for accountability, citing the league’s probationary period for Coastal following its realignment move. While the CFP weighed in as well, the ultimate decision was framed as a “collaborative outcome” to protect the sport’s integrity.

Behind closed doors, however, the sense in Conway is that Coastal agreed to the measures less out of conviction and more out of pressure. Vaughn’s fiery demeanor has made him a lightning rod since taking over the program, and this episode has only deepened the perception that the Chanticleers are being held to a different standard.

For a program that thrives on its outsider identity, the suspension may only sharpen the edge. Vaughn will be absent for two games, but his words — and the backlash — will echo throughout the season.

Fredrick Meredith Ready To Lead Chanticleers In Vaughn's Absence

Image

Conway, SC. - Fredrick Meredith had the kind of freshman season that programs build monuments around.

The Shelby, North Carolina native walked away with the Shaun Alexander Award as the nation’s top freshman, leading Coastal Carolina to a 14–1 record while throwing for 4,803 yards, 51 touchdowns, and completing 72 percent of his passes.

But numbers don’t hang on his locker. One photo does.

It shows Georgia cornerback Pat Paul streaking down the sideline, ball in hand, with Meredith sprawled out behind him after a desperate dive in the Fiesta Bowl. Ninety-six yards later, Georgia was celebrating the defensive touchdown that flipped momentum for good.

“Took me a while to find a clean shot of it,” Meredith admitted after a mid-summer workout. “Had to get the production crew to pull it off ESPN’s feed. But I wanted it right there in my locker, staring at me every day. A reminder. You can play great, you can have the numbers, you can get the respect… but one moment can take it all away.”

Now, Coastal enters 2032 with another uphill climb. Head coach Kade Vaughn will serve a two-game suspension to open the season, leaving the Chanticleers without the swaggering voice that has come to define their sideline.

“It’s like losing a teammate, but worse,” Meredith said. “Coach Vaughn has been the heartbeat of this program. Not having him out there in his teal shades, talking his talk, it hurts. But we’ve looked at it the same way we always do: as another obstacle. Coastal’s been swimming upstream since we joined the FBS. Nobody wanted us to succeed. And Coach keeps telling us—fine. Us against the world. So let’s make it so they can’t look away.”

In Vaughn’s absence, Meredith has taken it on himself to be more than just Coastal’s quarterback.

“Coach Tino [Sunseri], Coach Vaughn, and I have been in the film room every day. New wrinkles, new adjustments,” Meredith explained. “We want it so that even without Coach physically on the sideline, it feels like he’s there. And that falls on me as a leader.”

Vaughn hasn’t been shy about praising that growth.

“The day the suspension dropped, Fredrick texted me and said, ‘I want to make sure when you’re not there, I can be your voice,’” Vaughn recalled. “For a 21-year-old kid to take that on without anyone asking—that tells you everything you need to know about his makeup.”

A year ago, Meredith was the freshman who commanded huddles with a precocious calm. This spring and summer, teammates say he’s sharpened into something else entirely: Vaughn’s edge. Every route corrected, every snap dissected, every detail obsessed over until it’s Coastal-standard.

He’s been to the brink. He knows what it takes to climb the mountain. And now, with Vaughn silenced for two games, Meredith is determined to prove the Chanticleers can still march to their own drum.

Anthony Atogwe Next Man Up In Chanticleers Linebacker Legacy

Image

Conway, SC. - All throughout his freshman season, Anthony Atogwe was easy to spot. Wherever Walt Reyna went, the freshman linebacker wasn’t far behind.

“I already knew who he was, obviously,” Atogwe said this spring. “OG swept the defensive awards three straight years. I just wanted to soak up as much as I could from him.”

Reyna’s departure left a vacuum in the middle of Coastal Carolina’s defense. Ty Oden seized it last fall, earning the hardware Reyna once owned, but teammates and coaches insist Atogwe’s fingerprints were everywhere. He lined up inside, on the edge, in coverage, and as a blitzer. The Chanticleers shifted seamlessly between 4-3, 3-3-5, and the occasional 4-4 look, and Atogwe thrived in every role.

His spring nickname — “Double A” — stuck. A nod to his initials, yes, but more to his motor. “He just never stops,” one coach said.

The stat line reflected that relentlessness: 58 tackles, 28 for loss, and three-and-a-half sacks for a unit that ranked among the nation’s best. But the season ended with Georgia quarterback Tracey Plumele marching the Bulldogs downfield for a late, crushing touchdown. The offense took most of the headlines afterward. The defense took the failure personally.

“It shouldn’t have even come down to that,” Atogwe told a teammate this spring. “We had them. Third-and-7, and we let them off the hook. That’s on us. If we’re in the same position again? Best believe it ain’t happening again.”

This offseason, Coastal reloaded. Portal additions included pass rushers Ramon Querio and Tyron Acker, cornerbacks Craig Avant and Robert Elling, and even linebackers Colt DeLuca (Nebraska) and Manu Filimoeatu (Florida State). But defensive coordinator Tony White left no doubt who sets the tone.

“He’s the conductor — our Ray Lewis,” White said. “He calls the plays, he puts guys in the right spots, he’s studied under the best. Now it’s his time.”

That message was reinforced on Day 1 of spring practice. Hanging in Atogwe’s locker wasn’t his old No. 30, but No. 34 — the number Reyna wore while redefining what a Coastal linebacker could be. Head coach Kade Vaughn had promised that jersey would go only to the player who embodied Reyna’s ethic and edge.

Now it’s Atogwe’s.

The shoes are massive. The expectations are even bigger. But if “Double A” keeps building on the foundation he’s laid, there’s a chance the Chanticleers’ linebacker lineage won’t just continue — it could evolve into something even greater.
