Stanford starting quarterback Zach Hoppes enter transfer portal following playoff run
Chris Wallace -- 247Sports Stanford Football Insider
Stanford redshirt junior quarterback Zach Hoppes is entering the transfer portal, as first reported by Yahoo Sports.
Hoppes, who started every game this past season for the Cardinal, won the starting job last spring after transferring from Kansas, beating out Alex Rowe. Hoppes threw for 2844 yards and had nineteen touchdowns as he led the Cardinal to thirteen wins and their first playoff appearances.
The move, combined with Stanford's self-imposed transfer portal ban stemming from the Jamarice Wilder investigation, likely pencils in Rowe as next year's starter as he is expected to return to Palo Alto.
Hoppes is joined by offensive tackle Niles Creer, wide receiver Mike Good, running back Emmett Suggs and defensive tackle Alex Gasiva as the latest Cardinal to enter the portal. Good was the highest ranked recruit in last year's class as a four-star out of Hueytown, Alabama.

Stanford goes national to land top-12 recruiting class amid transfer portal ban
Chris Wallace -- 247Sports Stanford Football Insider
It's starting to feel like 2014 again as the Stanford Cardinal held a major event for the traditional National Signing Day, adding 24 high school players to finish with the twelfth ranked recruiting class in the country and a top six high school recruiting class.
With the Cardinal unable to add any transfer portal players due to their one-year self imposed ban, we saw a huge emphasis on their high school ranks as they were able to close the deal on four-star receivers Brent Baker and Kyle Morrison, two talents in SEC country that they were able to snag away from Missouri and Tennessee respectively.
The Cardinal ended the class with ten four-stars, third most in the ACC behind Clemson and Miami.
With the expanded board and class, the Cardinal also had an expanded map with recruits from all over the country with several recruits from the state of Georgia, Alabama, Texas as well as up the east coast with recruits from New Jersey, New York and Maryland along with the traditional California signings. Stanford head coach Bubba Mack said during the NSD press conference that the time usually spent scouting and recruiting transfer portal targets were instead spent on reevaluating player's senior tape.
"There's a lot of really good football players that don't pop until their senior year," Mack said, "With the added time, we were able to really look at some guys that we might have overlooked and got a chance to really go all over the country looking for some talent and I believe we certainly found some guys that can play for us and play for us at a high level."
Stanford signed four quarterbacks, adding Erik Weston, LaMarcus Hook and Tevita Luck -- no relation to Andrew -- to bolster their depth after signing D.J. Sapp on Early National Signing Day. Stanford played with just two scholarship quarterbacks last season.
