Championship Or Bust - Coastal Carolina Chanticleers 2032 Season Preview

Image

Conway, SC. - The Coastal Carolina Chanticleers don’t need to write down their goals for 2032. There’s only one that matters.

“Championship or bust,” head coach Kade Vaughn said after the program’s annual Teal Showcase.

The words carried extra sting because of how 2031 ended. Coastal came within a drive of the National Championship Game, only to watch Georgia — and a string of disputed calls — rip it away. For Vaughn, the farther his program gets from the breakthrough 2028 title, the louder the whispers grow that it was Bryce Underwood’s brilliance, not Vaughn’s system, that powered the run.

The 2032 roster is built to silence that narrative. The defense, already ranked No. 1 nationally a year ago, added depth and ferocity at every level: pass rushers, linebackers, and cornerbacks. The idea is simple — no more late collapses, no more excuses.

“No excuses, period. We here and we ain’t going nowhere,” middle linebacker Anthony Atogwe said, speaking in his newly earned No. 34 jersey.

The number carries weight in Conway. It belonged to Walt Reyna, the linebacker who defined Coastal’s defensive rise and whose work ethic set the program’s gold standard. Vaughn reserved it for the defender most worthy of carrying on that legacy.

“There’s only one way I can do this honor justice,” Atogwe said. “Lead another top-flight defense that brings home a National Championship, just like OG did.”

Still, the defense may only be half the story.

Quarterback Fredrick Meredith holds the keys. Even without Heisman winner Devin Hajrullahu, the redshirt sophomore is expected to pilot one of the nation’s most explosive offenses.

“People see Devin’s highlights and think it was a one-man show,” new offensive coordinator Tino Sunseri said. “Fred threw for nearly 4,800 yards and 51 touchdowns, but no receiver went over 1,000 yards. That’s balance. That’s decisiveness. Defenses can’t key on just one guy because any of them — TT [Tavares Tinker] in the slot, Cruise [Cruise Missle] outside, Big J [Jamal Stephen] down the seam — can take over a game. That’s what makes us dangerous.”

Meredith has the numbers, but the Fiesta Bowl loss lingers. Two costly pick-sixes left him gutted. Teammates say this spring felt different. He commanded the huddle as a freshman. Now? He demanded more, driving his offense with Vaughn-like intensity.

“We were good last year,” Meredith told the offense. “We’ve got to be better than good if we want to finish at the top of the mountain.”

If that climb wasn’t daunting enough, the Chanticleers will open without Vaughn. The NCAA suspended him for the first two games — a penalty that might derail lesser programs.

“Just noise,” senior cornerback Mike Momah said, dismissing it with a shrug. “They want to cripple us because we do things our way. But Coastal’s bigger than just Coach Vaughn. He built the standard. We’ll uphold it.”

Defensive coordinator Tony White will serve as interim head coach for those two games. That twist alone sets the stage for a fascinating Week 1 — Coastal hosts Memphis, fresh off a 13–1 season and a near-miss playoff berth.

The Tigers’ head coach? Dowell Loggains. The same Loggains whose whistleblowing at Appalachian State sparked the investigation into Vaughn. The same Loggains who took over at Memphis only after White left for Conway, a move Loggains openly mocked.

“I think that says more about his reputation than his coaching ability,” Loggains said upon his hire, firing an early shot at his predecessor.

Now, White and Loggains meet on opposite sidelines in a game that could reshape both their narratives.

And then, looming just two weeks later, the measuring stick everyone in college football will be watching: Georgia. In Athens. For Vaughn's 1st game back from suspension.

“It’s time for Coach Vaughn to prove he can adapt,” Nick Saban said during ESPN’s season preview. “He’s beaten Clemson, Oregon, USC, even Alabama. But Georgia? That’s different. Twice they’ve beaten him soundly. Does Kirby just have the antidote to his system, or can Vaughn finally solve it?”

That’s only part of a loaded schedule. Road trips to No. 9 Florida and No. 4 Miami, a first-ever ACC clash, await. Clemson, Oregon, and West Virginia all visit Conway.

It’s a gauntlet. It’s also the opportunity Vaughn and Meredith have been waiting for.

The message out of Conway hasn’t changed.

The goal isn’t to be in the conversation. The goal isn’t to be remembered for 2028.

The goal is to finish 2032 as champions — or nothing at all.

Roster looks loaded.. Must be nice to have 3 RB's at the top of the depth chart with Elite trait. Just shows the run game doesn't have to be a 1 man show.

It's funny that your opening with Memphis because that is my opponent Week 1 in my BSU Dynasty.. I hope they give you a better game then I got.. Mine was a blood bath..

The depth your of info you include in your reports are just amazing my friend..

its definitely championship or bust in Conway. Been four years since the 1st Natty, its time to add another to the trophy case before the ACC permanently suspends Vaughn

They did not offer me any better game than you

Thanks man! Just trying to get the whole scope of everything going on. Added a new wrinkle last season with some randomly generated events as well which should shake things up.

I think either a key player getting hit with a random event or injuries will be the only thing to stop us. But then again, I said that last year and Georgia knocked us down with authority

Conway, SC. - If Dowell Loggains thought the Chanticleers faithful had forgotten his role in sparking the NCAA’s investigation into Kade Vaughn five years ago, he got his answer before kickoff. The infamous signs of Vaughn puffing a cigar tipped with Loggains’ face were out in full force as the Memphis Tigers rolled into Conway, hoping to spring an upset as a fringe Top-25 team.

Instead, they were steamrolled.

Coastal Carolina turned Vaughn’s two-game suspension into fuel, throttling Memphis 54–3 in a season-opening rout that left no doubt about their championship intent.

From the jump, Coastal’s defense looked like it was already in November form. Ten sacks, relentless pressure, and a parade of 3rd-and-longs suffocated the Tigers’ offense. Only a late 54-yard completion got Memphis within scoring range, and even then, the drive ended with yet another sack and a meaningless field goal.

On the other side, sophomore quarterback Fredrick Meredith played like he had something to prove. He completed 75% of his passes, torching the Tigers for 396 yards and four touchdowns through the air, while adding two more scores with his legs.

“That was something we emphasized all offseason,” said first-year OC Tino Sunseri. “He’s not Bryce Underwood, but he’s got juice. We’ve worked on him knowing when to trust his legs, when to make defenses pay. Tonight was a great step in that direction.”

The lone blemish: three first-half sacks, as Meredith twice misread the pocket and drifted into pressure.

“Still working through it,” Meredith admitted. “We’ve got a couple new guys on the right side. It’s just about getting a feel for each other.”

Still, it was the kind of emphatic performance Coastal promised all summer — a statement win, even with their head coach watching from home.

Next up: a trip to Blacksburg, where the Chanticleers open conference play against Virginia Tech.

Blacksburg, VA. - On paper, Coastal Carolina’s trip to Lane Stadium looked like a rout. Fifty-six points, eight sacks, two interceptions — the kind of statistical beatdown you’d expect from a title contender. But look closer, and the picture shifts. This wasn’t the ruthless efficiency of a team locked in. It was a group going through the motions, leaning on talent and expecting victory to come by default.

“They’re playing a dangerous game right now,” longtime radio analyst Layne Harris warned on the Chanticleers broadcast. “They know they’re good, and sometimes they play like that’s enough. This afternoon, it looked like a team expecting to win no matter how sloppy they were.”

The concerns are real. Coastal piled up eight holding penalties for the second straight week — drive-killers that likely had Coach Vaughn punching air. More troubling? A trio of interceptions thrown by star quarterback Fredrick Meredith, all to the same defender: Virginia Tech linebacker DeMarcus Waiters.

“He’s an athletic linebacker with safety-level coverage skills,” Meredith admitted postgame. “We tried to force a couple around him, and he made us pay. That’s on me — I’ve got to use my eyes better, move him, or just go somewhere else with the ball.”

Two of those picks came on throws to wideout Percy LaRue, filling in for the injured Jamal Stephen. When asked if the size difference between LaRue (6’2”) and Stephen (6’7”) played a role, Meredith didn’t hesitate: “No excuses. Doesn’t matter who’s out there — I’ve got to execute.”

Meredith, who shredded Memphis a week ago, didn’t shy away from what comes next. “Practice this week? It’s going to be hell,” he said. Asked if having Coach Vaughn back on the sideline would have changed anything, the quarterback was blunt. “Doesn’t matter. We’ve got to execute. Period.”

Thankfully for the Chanticleers, while the offense wavered in stretches, the defense once again looked like a brick wall. Virginia Tech wideout Jalen Tyree, who torched Ole Miss for 12 catches, 227 yards, and two touchdowns in the Hokies’ 38–35 upset last week, entered the game brimming with confidence. When asked if he planned to follow it up against Coastal, Tyree kept it short: “Wait and see.”

“Still waiting,” cornerback Mike Momah quipped after the game, having limited Tyree to a single catch while grabbing an interception of his own. The senior didn’t stop there, adding: “These sorry ACC receivers can keep trying me. It’s seat-belt season.”

For all their flaws, the Chanticleers still walked out 2–0. But the margin for error disappears next week when they travel Between the Hedges. Georgia looms — the same Georgia that’s handed Kade Vaughn his most painful losses.

“Won’t happen,” Meredith promised when asked if Coastal could afford another lackluster performance in Athens.

The problem? If it does happen, the Bulldogs might just add another scar to Vaughn’s resume.

If it wasn't for a trio of athletic interceptions by DeMarcus Waiters, this game could've been even uglier.

Image
Tyler Hagg and Frank DuBose both contributed on special teams with long touchdown returns to keep the Hokies reeling.

Quincy Adeiyi finally tried someone not named Mike Momah and was able to toss this 3rd Q touchdown to finally get VTech on the board.
