Vaughn Issues Formal Apology For Post-Game Tirade

Image

Conway, SC. - After serving a two-game suspension handed down by the ACC and College Football Playoff Committee, Coastal Carolina head coach Kade Vaughn issued a formal apology Monday, following the Chanticleers’ 56-10 rout of Virginia Tech that moved them to 2–0 without their head coach on the sideline.

“I want to take a moment to address my comments following last season’s Fiesta Bowl. I understand that my words did not reflect the standard expected of me as a head coach in the ACC or as a representative of Coastal Carolina University.

I let my frustration get the better of me in that moment, and I recognize now that there are better ways to express disagreement or disappointment. I respect the process, and I accept the league’s decision.

I’ve spent the last two weeks focused on our team — not on the past, not on headlines — but on preparing these young men to compete the right way. Our guys have handled themselves with maturity and class, and I’m proud of how this program has responded.

With that said, my attention is on Georgia this week. That’s where it belongs. We’re excited to have our full staff back and to keep building on what this group has started. That’s all I’m going to say about it.”

Vaughn then took five pre-approved questions from local media — a condition required as part of his reinstatement — offering brief, measured responses before ending the press conference after six minutes.

If the intent of Kade Vaughn’s public apology was to smooth tensions with the ACC or the CFP, it didn’t quite land that way.

Delivered in a tightly controlled six-minute press conference, Vaughn’s statement checked every box required for reinstatement but carried all the warmth of a readout from a teleprompter. He rarely looked up from the podium, offered clipped answers to the five pre-screened questions, and ended the session without acknowledging follow-ups — a performance some national outlets described as “obligatory at best, defiant at worst.”

Inside the Coastal program, however, the reaction was different. Players reportedly watched the press conference together in the team facility and erupted when Vaughn closed with, “That’s all I’m going to say about it.” To them, it wasn’t an apology — it was a signal.

The Chanticleers, 2–0 after back-to-back blowouts under interim head coach Tony White, have circled this week’s matchup with Georgia as a statement opportunity. Vaughn’s suspension may be over, but the sense around Conway is that the fight with the ACC isn’t.

As one assistant put it off the record: “They wanted contrition. What they got was Coastal.”

they have some other higher rated pass rushers, i just always choose the top tackler, top TFL, top sack, and top INT for the key performers

Anthony Atogwe promised the Chanticleers defense would atone for last seasons Fiesta Bowl let down. 8 sacks, two forced fumbles, and a safety later, Double A delivered on that guarantee.

Athens, GA. -It may only be Week 3 of the 2032 season, but everyone around college football understood what this one meant in Conway. Coastal Carolina’s 47–3 dismantling of Georgia wasn’t just another early-season victory — it was personal. The Bulldogs had eliminated the Chanticleers from the College Football Playoff in both 2029 and 2031.

“You never want to put too much emphasis on a regular-season game — they’re all important,” head coach Kade Vaughn said after the win. “But yeah. This one meant more.”

Coastal’s intent was obvious from the start. The Chanticleers opened the afternoon with a 16-play, 81-yard drive that chewed up nearly seven minutes of clock before quarterback Fredrick Meredith powered across the goal line on fourth-and-two.

“You think these guys wanted to get on the board first?” joked Kirk Herbstreit from the broadcast booth as Sanford Stadium fell quiet.

From there, it was all teal.

Georgia’s freshman quarterback Jabari Egbule looked every bit his age, overwhelmed by a Coastal defense that suffocated him from the opening snap. The Chanticleers racked up eight sacks, forced a fumble recovered in the end zone for a safety, and left the young signal-caller limping by game’s end.

Meanwhile, senior cornerback Mike Momah relished his individual matchup with Georgia wideout Dalvin Childers — the same receiver who caught the game-winning touchdown against Coastal in last year’s Fiesta Bowl.

The tone was set early when Momah broke up the first pass thrown Childers’ way, punctuating the hit with, “You in the gulag now, boy.”

Childers managed four catches for 57 yards on the day — but just one of those, a 12-yarder, came against Momah in man coverage.

Without their go-to target producing consistently, Georgia’s offense sputtered — compounded by curious play-calling from Kirby Smart’s staff.

“This might be the first time I’ve seen Kirby Smart this outcoached,” marveled Herbstreit. “I get that Coastal has a great rushing defense, but only four total rushes in the entire game? They’re just lining up and teeing off on Egbule at this point.”

Smart didn’t shy away from that criticism afterward. “You can’t run into a brick wall and expect to go through it,” he said, referencing Coastal’s dominant front seven. “We wanted to challenge their secondary. It didn’t work.”

For the Chanticleers, the victory was both cathartic and critical — a redemptive moment for a program eyeing another playoff run. But even in triumph, old frustrations resurfaced. Coastal was flagged nine times for holding, continuing an issue that has lingered since last year’s Fiesta Bowl loss.

Each time a yellow flag flew in the vicinity of the offensive line, the broadcast cameras seemed to find Vaughn on the sideline — arms folded, jaw tight.

When asked if he felt officials were “sending a message,” Vaughn stayed composed: “I stand by my previous statements, and that’s all I’m going to say on the matter.”

As for Meredith, the sophomore quarterback finally found his own measure of redemption after a disastrous Fiesta Bowl (two pick-sixes) and a three-interception outing last week at Virginia Tech.

“I think I’ve watched that Georgia tape more than I watched SpongeBob as a kid,” Meredith joked. “I knew everything they were doing before they even set up. I was reading their mail while they were still pulling in the driveway.”

Meredith finished 28-of-36 for 251 yards and two touchdowns through the air, adding 66 yards and three more scores on the ground — a near-flawless performance against one of the sport’s perennial giants.

Still, Vaughn was quick to pivot the focus forward. Coastal’s schedule offers no rest: a home ACC date with Pittsburgh, followed by consecutive road trips to No. 8 Florida and No. 4 Miami, then a home clash with in-state rival Clemson.

“It’s a nice win, an emotional one for us,” Vaughn said. “Especially being against these guys and my return from suspension. But now it’s back to the grind. We can’t get caught up in this. If we celebrate a Week 3 win like it’s a championship, we’ll miss the playoffs — and then this won’t mean anything.”

Image
Meredith seemed a step ahead of Georgia all afternoon with checkdowns and timely scrambles, refusing to let even the multitude of holding penalties stall the Chants.

Up 14-0, this 30 yard touchdown strike to Bernie Bender felt like the early killshot as the Bulldogs fell into a 21-0 hole.

Great day for Meredith and a great day for the Spear and a great day by the Coastal D... Looks like you were in the Georgia Backfield all day.. Sorta reminds of the real life Boise State/Notre Dame yesterday.. Poor Maddux Madsen was running for his life almost every play and when he wasn't he was making rushed reads on the Defense leading to some costly picks. You Defense owned those young puppies at QB.

:yep: they had no room to throw and decided not to run which was the most puzzling part. Like I get the CPU AI isn't always the best, but two of their four runs came on their final drive :pgdead:

Kirby was just leaving the young QB out to dry in that one
