Cardinal escape near disaster against Wake Forest thanks to last minute rally
Everything that could have gone wrong for Stanford was going wrong for the Cardinal in their return to Palo Alto after a nearly two-month long road trip. Quarterback Alex Rowe had thrown three interceptions, their defense couldn't get a stop and running backs Trumaine Lasike and Rashawn Crouse were sidelined with an injury, forcing Stanford to have to use a fullback, Sam Bootle, on fourth and goal with a chance to take the lead with 1:37 remaining which was stopped.

And then, everything went right for the Cardinal.

Stanford scored on a safety, their second of the day, to make it a one-point game and Bootle and Anthony Masifilo helped lead Stanford down the field to set up Ben Hall's game winning field goal as time expired to beat Wake Forest 43-41 on Saturday night.

The Demon Deacons took their first lead of the game early in the third quarter, scoring on their first drive of the second half with Lynn Landolt's pass to Spencer Cantrell on third down, an issue that followed Stanford's defense throughout the game. It would be a brief one as Rowe, with a 25-yard completion to Dorian Droosgma and two third down conversions to Rodney Cookus would set up Masifilo's touchdown to retake the lead heading into the fourth.

It's in the fourth quarter that things got shaky for the Cardinal as Landolt would complete all five attempts and then Kevin Knowles found a gap on the right side of Stanford's defense for the touchdown. On the ensuing drive, Rowe would target Cookus on three consecutive passes, all incompletions which led to a punt.

Following the Stanford punt, the Cardinal defense would force a three and out only for Rowe to throw an interception on the second play of the drive, targeting Cookus. All three of Rowe's interceptions came on passes that were targeted for Cookus, something the quarterback said he needs to do a better job of not eyeing him down. On the very next play, Caleb Spitz got loose for a fifteen yard touchdown to make it a two possession lead with five minutes left.

Rowe would bounce back, going back to Cookus for gains of twenty and twenty-three yards on consecutive plays and then found Alfonso Bramble for the touchdown on a scramble drill to secure eight points, following the two point conversion, in a little over a minute.

Landolt would make his first mistake of the night on an errant throw on third and ten that resulted in Angel Bass intercepting the pass but the drive would falter at the goal line as Stanford was unable to punch it in, which led to the safety.

Sad that I've thrown enough picks to see the INT coming the moment you release the ball :drose:

That safety saved your ass though, Wake Forest almost had that number.
