gotta go out on top. Can't come back, get bounced in the 1st round, THEN dip with your tail between your legs

Nicely done. Cheese had a game but the real credit goes to the defense, not giving up a touchdown until the fourth quarter. What a season Nico put together.

Architect Secured: Nico Augustine signs five-year extension
By Cheryl Smith
DALLAS – Fresh off delivering SMU's first National championship of the modern era with a stunning victory over the Alabama Crimson Tide in the 2029 title game, head coach Nico Augustine has officially recommitted to the Mustangs, signing a five-year contract extension that rivals the richest deals in the history of college football.
While financial details were not disclosed, multiple sources confirmed the agreement places Augustine among the highest-paid head coaches in the sport, on par with contracts held by the game's most powerful figures. For SMU, it is both a reward and a declaration: this era is not a fluke - it is the foundation.
"We're building something permanent here," SMU athletic director Damon Evans said. "And Nico is the reason."
Augustine's rise has been meteoric.
Once regarded as one of the brightest offensive minds in college football, Augustine first made waves after jumping to the NCAA ranks as an offensive coordinator at Arkansas State, where his tempo-drive, quarterback-friendly system quickly gained national attention. That reputation followed him to Dallas in 2027, when SMU entrusted him with rebuilding the program after Rhett Lashlee departed for Arkansas.
Three seasons later, the results speak for themselves.
Under Augustine, SMU has lost just three regular-season games (all in his first year), reached the College Football Playoffs in back-to-back seasons, and now claimed the 2029 National Championship, their first since 1982.
In the process, Augustine has transformed SMU from rising contender into a national standard.
Given that resume, the rumors were inevitable.
Throughout the season, Augustine was heavily linked to potential openings in the SEC, with insiders speculating that Georgia and other heavyweights were preparing offers capable of testing even the most loyal coach. But when Augustine finally spoke, he left no ambiguity.
"I was never thinking about leaving," Augustin said at the press conference announcing the extension. "This is home. I'm proud to be back in Dallas as the head coach at SMU, and I'm even prouder of what we're building here. We're not chasing moments anymore. We are the moment."
The words carried weight. So did the signature.
Augustine's recommitment comes at a pivotal moment.
The championship roster that conquered Alabama now faces significant turnover, with a veteran-laden class graduating and several underclassmen weighing NFL decisions. Compounding the challenge, SMU will also undergo a coordinator rest with Tony Sanchez, the architect of SMU's explosive offense, having accepted the head coaching job at San Jose State. Meanwhile, Kerry Abraham departs for Michigan State after two seasons as the mastermind behind the nation's top defense.
Replacing both coordinators - while sustaining championship standards - will be Augustine's first major test of this new contract era.
"Nico's greatest challenge starts now," legendary Alabama head coach and current College Gameday commentator Nick Saban said. "It's hard to win once. It's brutally hard to stay on top."
Yet if history is any guide, Augustine is uniquely equipped for the task.
He recruits nationally.
He develops quarterbacks.
He adapts fast than most defenses can respond.
And now, with financial security, institutional backing, and a championship banner hanging in Ford Stadium, Augustine enters the next phase of his tenure with unprecedented leverage.
For SMU, the message to college football is unmistakable.
The Mustangs are not renting greatness. They've bought it.
