Saturday, September 14, 2029 | Gerald J. Ford Stadium (Dallas, TX)

Week 3 Preview: vs #12 TCU (2-0, 0-0)

Synopsis
SMU has pulled off two impressive (yet worrisome) victories over SEC foes in Alabama and Texas to start their season, knocking the Crimson Tide off the top spot and taking over, while knocking the Longhorns out of the top spot. With only one more ranked opponent on the schedule in #4 Pittsburgh coming on Week 6, they only have #12-ranked TCU to potentially interfere with their second consecutive perfect season.

The Horned Frogs gave the Mustangs a run for their money early last year, needing tight end Dwayne Kasay to get into the end zone late in the fourth quarter for SMU to muster up the victory. The Horned Frogs return a potent roster led by new quarterback Kurt Eagles and one of the nation's most potent offenses to start their season. Albeit only facing off against an FCS school they put 65 on and Bowling Green (who they smacked 56-10), the offense has scored early and often and the defense has capitalized on those mistakes.

The Mustangs' offense has still been adjusting to all the differences from last year's roster (namely offensive coordinator Tony Sanchez moving on and being replaced by Kwame Aguyei and his multi-running back offense) and hasn't been as red-hot to start as they typically are. Facing off against two stout, SEC defensive fronts will do that to you.

Quarterback Alonzo Cheeseman fares the best against rivals, and the Mustangs will need him to perform like the Heisman winner that he is to slip past their third consecutive ranked opponent.

Mustangs pull ahead early, fly past rival TCU for Battle for the Iron Skillet victory

Image
‣ If there was any doubt that true freshman running back Dwayne Sowells could have an impact in a crowded running back room, they were dismissed after today's insane performance.

Score

FINAL 1 2 3 4 T
#1 SMU 7 20 6 0 33
#12 TCU 0 0 7 7 14

Game Summary

The Iron Skillet isn’t just staying in Dallas - it’s becoming permanent décor.

No. 1 SMU delivered another emphatic chapter in its rivalry dominance over No. 12 TCU, pulling away for a 33- 14 victory powered by a devastating second quarter and a true freshman’s breakout performance that brought the crowd to its feet.

After a competitive opening frame, SMU flipped the game with 20 unanswered points in the second quarter, overwhelming TCU on both sides of the ball and never looking back.

The headline belonged to true freshman Dwayne Sowells, who turned just four carries into 127 rushing yards, averaging a staggering 31.8 yards per attempt, highlighted by his 53-yard scamper for a touchdown in the second quarter and a 69-yard rush in the fourth quarter to seal the game.

Heisman winner Alonzo Cheeseman didn’t need a gaudy stat line. He orchestrated the offense with efficiency, leaning on the run game and controlling tempo as SMU methodically wore down TCU’s front.

The Mustangs finished with a balanced attack that kept TCU guessing and prevented the Horned Frogs from generating consistent pressure.

If the offense delivered the highlights, the defense delivered the message.

SMU suffocated TCU for most of the night, forcing stalled drives and eliminating big plays. Quarterback Kurt Eagles was intercepted twice, both coming off disruptive plays in the middle of the field.

MIKE linebacker Keke Madden continued his early-season surge, recording one of those interceptions and now posting picks in back-to-back games - a sign that he’s growing into the leadership role vacated by last year’s veterans.

The Mustangs’ front consistently collapsed the pocket, while the secondary kept everything in front, turning TCU’s offense into a series of short, ineffective possessions.
