2030 WASHINGTON STATE COUGARS MEDIA GUIDE

PAC-12(14) OUTLOOK

Washington State's quest for a Pac-12/14 title just got alot harder with the return of Oregon/USC/Washington/BYU/Arizona State ect... However most experts have the Cougars picked to finish at least 3rd or 4th in the Conference with the majority picking defending Champions Oregon or USC to finish 1/2

THE SCHEDULE

If the new Pac-12 schedule wasn't going to be hard enough, WSU already had on the books a pair of Top-25 matchups starting with #14 Mississippi State in Week 1 in Starksville.. The Bulldogs are coming off a American Conference Championship and a trip to the Semi Finals .

WSU will kickoff it's home opener the following week vs Fresno State in Pullman.

WSU will then kick off their Pac-12 schedule with the Apple Cup in Seattle in Week 3.

WSU will close out non-conference play with another Top-25 road trip as they head to Tuscalossa to take on #25 Alabama.

Washington State will then have back to back "Bye Week's" in Week 6 and 7 before return to the field in Week 8 @ #16 Boise State

WSU will continue another weird trend after finishing last season with 3 straight road trips, WSU will close out 2030 with 4 straight home games.

Week 9 WSU will host UCLA before playing their final road game in Week 10 @ #24 BYU.

Then it's

Week 11 vs #3 Oregon
Week 12 vs Oregon State
Week 13 vs Arizona State
Week 14 vs Utah "Senior Night"

THE ROSTER

QB #5 RS SR Calvin Loyd (83)
QB #6 RS FR Antwan Beaver (82)
QB #9 RS SO Cortez Ottis (79)

Loyd started 11 games in 2029 throwing for 3059 yds with 36 TD and 7 INT well adding 7 rushing touchdowns.

Ottis appeared in 3 games including 2 starts during Loyd's 3 game suspension and passed for 1281 yds with 12 TD and 6 INT

Beaver was a 4* Recruit last season who redshirted but had a great spring and looks ready to push Ottis for QB2 this season and look to position himself as QB1 in 2031

With just 3 QB's on the roster and Loyd set to graduate, look for Moore/Miller to try and land at least 2 High school recruits and likely bring in a transfer portal QB to compete against Beaver and Ottis next season for QB1.

RB #30 RS SR Clint Powell (92)
RB #31 RS SO Morris Owens (87)
RB #20 RS SO Marcell Boulware (84)
RB #35 RS FR Fredrick Anthrop (79)

RB #27 (R) SO Cedrick Mangum (85)
RB #23 (R) FR Niles Swope (76)

FB #44 SR Nyles Kugbila (84)
FB #41 (R) FR Garrison Wolf (55)

Powell led the Cougars with 15 9 carries for 873 yds and 9 TD just 1 year after combining for almost 2000 yds of Total Offense (808 yds 11 TD rushing, 1084 yds 8 TD receiving).. Powell also had 38 rec for 419 yds and 3 TD receiving last year.

Owens rushed for 1242 yds with 10 TD last year for Coastal Carolina and Boulware rushed for 1205 yds with 18 TD for Kentucky.. Their additions will allow former 4* Recruit Cedrick Mangum (412 yds 4 TD) a chance to take his redshirt year and then give the Cougars a dominated 3 headed monster in 2031.

WR #16 RS JR Calvin Wayne (93)
WR #85 RS JR Deon Rugamba (88)
WR #88 RS SR Johnny Ivory (83)
WR #1 RS SO Oscar Paul (82)
WR #14 RS FR Jordin Lockett (79)
WR #10 RS FR Marquise Bartow (79)

WR #80 (R) FR Tyler Finger (76)
WR#17 (R) FR Alfonso Dwyer (74)

Wayne takes over as WR1 but will also play alot out of the slot. Wayne recorded 36 rec for 504 yds and 5 TD last season.. Ivory will be the team's #2. Ivory had 67 rec for 1039 yds and 5 TD last year for Kansas State. Rugamba who won the Jet Award for his efforts on Special teams becomes the #3. Rugamba recorded just 1 catch last season but he did have 15 rec for 160 yds and 2 TD in 2028.

Paul will battle Lockett and Bartow for the #4/#5 roles well Finger and Dwyer will redshirt and hopefully be ready to step in next season with Ivory graduating and Wayne most likely looking at the NFL draft with a big season.

TE #42RS JR Fetu Ursua (88)
TE #89 RS FR Tyron Jackson (76)
TE #83 RS SO Hasheem Mamula (74)

Ursua transfered in from N. Illinois last season after recording 50 rec for 528 yds and 2 TD for the Huskies. He takes over as TE1, well former 4* Recruit Tyron Jackson coming off his redshirt will be the #2.. Mamula moves back from FB to TE as the #3.

O-LINE

LT #70 FR Terrance Worrilow (79)
LG #54 RS JR Chuck Anders (87)
C #57 RS SR Alonzo Lowell (86)
RG #79 RS SR Andy Weiner (87)
RT #65 RS SR Matt Retkofsky (87)

Retkofsky transfered in from Pitt last year after starting for 2 years for the Panthers giving up 12 and 11 Sacks.. Last year he gave up just 4 starting 11 games for the Cougars.. Weiner has appeared in 27 games over 4 seasons and is ready to finally make his mark as a fulltime starter. Lowell a Iowa State transfer appeared in 7 games last year for the Cougars but and had a great spring earning the starting job. Anders has been a key backup and spot starter the past 2 years playing in 29 games giving up just 1 sack, well Worrilow was a 5* Recruit in this year's class.

OT #72 RS JR Devon Livings (79), OT #76 RS SO Glenn Merrick (77), OG #55 RS SR Miles Egboh (80), C #56 RS JR Miles Ejiofor (84) C #57 RS JR Scott Gibbs (81) OG #52 RS SO Harvey Camarda (82), OG #53 RS SO Cortez Mundy (75) OT #74 RS JR Javier Bueno (80), OT #68 RS JR Leati Tuipulotu (75) OT #75 RS FR Garrett Stacy (72) OG #58 (R) FR Tim Keenan (74) C #61 (R) FR Tevan Yeboah (66)

Center Miles Ejiofor, Guard Harvey Camarda and Tackles Devon Livings and Javior Bueno are ready waiting in the wings to jump in when needed. The rest of the guy's provide plenty of depth but with 4 Seniors including 3 starters this will be a key position of recruiting for Coach Moore.

D-LINE

DE #91 SR Stephen Harris (83)
DE #90 SO Marquez Charles (82)
DE #97 RS SR Moses Pryor (83)
DE #98 RS SR Jeremiah Makovika (81)
DE #92 RS SR Jaden Rice (81)

DT #93 RS SR Nolan Conklin (84)
DT #96 RS SR Kahil Figueroa (82)
DT #94 RS SR Josh Johnson (79)
DT #95 RS SO James Quintero (77)
DT #77 RS FR Jimmie Jones (68)

Harris (11 career sacks) and Charles (10 TFL, 5.5 sacks) will be the primary starters at DE and Conklin (25 TFL, 10 sacks the past 2 years) will be the primary starter at DT. Pryor a Lake Stevens WA native started his career at Ohio for 2 seasons before transfering to Oregon State last year where he had 20 Tackles 4 TFL and 2.5 sacks. He will look to push all 3 for playing opportunity. However this is a veteran group with 7 of the team's 20 Seniors making this a high priority for the new DC this up coming recruiting season.

LINEBACKERS

#23 SO Serge Udeze (81)
#57 SO Amari Tolbert (77)
#44 RS JR Dashawn Garner (83)
#19 SO Al Boone (80)
#28 RS SO Quincy Baity (74)
#42 RS FR Trae Hasty (80)
#32 RS FR Julius Peacock (77)
#43 RS FR Koren John (74)

#49 (R) FR Antonio Berryhill (72)

Udeze (56 Tackles 7 TFL), Boone (47 Tackles 5 TFL) and Tolbert (45 Tackles 2 TFL) were a trio of 4* Recruits who all saw PT last season.. They will be pushed by transfers Garner (Ohio) and Hasty (UCLA) well Peacock, John and Baity also provide some young upside depth. Look for a few of these guy's to transition to FS/SS and even DE next season as new DC Scott Hazelton looks to get the best athletes on the field.

SECONDARY

CB #11 RS JR Marques Stroughter (87)
CB #17 RS SO Tevin Gentry (83)
CB #3 RS JR Chuck Hajrullahu (81)
CB #15 RS JR Jay Cotter (75)
CB #25 RS FR Rakkim Teague (72)

Stroughter and Hajrullahu will be the teams starters well Gentry will like too as the #5 DB.. Hajrullahu led the team with 4 INT's last seson despite not making a start

FS #8 RS SR Vonn Hurley (88)
FS #7 RS SR Julius Canday (76)
FS #16 RS SO Lonnie Cooks (76)
FS #9 RS SO Percy Jackson (74)

SS #2 RS SR Dwayne Carstens (83)
SS #5 RS SR Hugh Fredrickson (78)
SS #29 RS SR Kevin Burnett (75)

Hurley a transfer from Rice started 10 games last year and recorded 51 Tackles, Carstens played in 10 games logging 64 Tackles with 5 TFL and 1.5 sacks..

With 5 Seniors in the Safeties room this will be a key area of recruiting for the Cougars.

SPECIAL TEAMS

PK- #10 RS SO Villiami Strong (85)
P- #11 JR Juan Chavez (85)
Kickoff Specialist RS FR Keenan Carr (83)

Strong will look to replace 4 year PK Adali Lounsbury.. Strong made 13/17 FG and 34/34 XPT last year for Ohio.. Chavez returns after exploring the portal after serving as the Cougars punter the past 2 seasons. Carr coming off his redshirt season will handle kickoffs for now but could push the others.

WEEK 1 RECAP

Washington State jumped out to a early (10-0) lead in the 1st Quarter and the offense kept things rolling in the 2nd Quarter as WSU scores 3 times to take a commanding (31-13) lead into the locker room.

QB Calvin Loyd played a mistake free 1st half completing 21/31 (67%) throwing for 238 yds with 3 TD well RB Clint Powell kept the offense balanced with 15 carries for 104 yds and a touchdown

Junior TE Fetu Ursua led the team with 5 rec for 72 yds but both Calvin Wayne (4 rec 33 yds 1 TD) Johnny Ivory (4 rec 46 yds) and Oscar Paul (3 rec 26 yds 2 TD as well as Powell (2 rec 35 yds) gave Loyd plenty of targets.

Well Miss State QB TJ Antwine (88) didn't look great throwing the ball (12/21 141 yds 1 INT) he was solid running the ball (6 carries 44 yds) well the Bulldogs managed to put up 78 yds on the ground including their lone touchdown by SR RB John Hocker (88).

It was a tale of 2 half's for Cougar QB Calvin Lloy.. After completing 21/31 pass's in the 1st half, Loyd would struggle in the 2nd half completing just 7 pass's in 21 attempts for 54 yds well throwing his 1st INT of the season as Mississippi State battled back making it (31-27) midway through the 3rd Quarter.

WSU PK Viliami Strong would miss a 53 yd FG toward the end of the 3rd quarter but would redeem himself connecting on a 47 yard attempt to give the Cougars the touchdown lead. (34-27).

Miss State would have several chances at tying the game and WSU would have several at extending their lead as both teams combine to go 0-6 on 4th Downs in the 4th (MSU 0/4 WSU 0/2).

WSU would face a small scare in the 4th as star RB Clint Powell leaves the field with a injury.. Transfer's Morris Owens and Marcell Bouldware however would take over and combine for 16 carries for 102 yds to close out the game.
FINAL SCORE WASHINGTON STATE-34 MISS STATE-27

WEEK 2 RECAP
Since Coach Kirby Moore's arrival in Pullman, Washington State has produced the highest scoring average in the nation and tonight's outcome will go along way in helping WSU battle for that crown for another season.

WSU dominated the first half on both sides of the ball scoring 6 touchdowns well holding Fresno State to just 1 as they took a commanding (45-7) lead into the locker room.

The Cougar Offense was hitting on cylinders as QB Calvin Loyd threw for 328 yds completing 66% of his pass’s throwing 3 TD’s. Loyd’s only mistake was a pass to the endzone on a last second drive to end the half that was picked off.

Loyd also had a big 1st half running the ball as he carried it 5 times for 67 yds including 31 yd touchdown run midway through the 2nd Quarter. SR RB Clint Powell coming off a 100+ yd performance against Miss State also had a big half racking up 75 yds on 15 carries well RS SO Morris Owens adds 2 rushing touchdowns on 5 carries and 17 yds showcasing his ability to find the endzone inside the 5 yd line.

Loyd once again proved he has no favorite target as 7 different players caught at least 1 ball including Redshirt Freshman Jordin Lockett who hauled in a 39 yd touchdown for his first career reception. Calvin Wayne led all WR’s with 5 rec for 72 yds and a touchdown well JR TE Fetu Ursua supplied the biggest play of the first half hauling in a 71 yd touchdown to finish with 3 rec for 112 yds and the score.

On Defense WSU held Fresno State to just 84 yd of Total Offense allowing just 4 1st Downs as JR Punter Luke Bowanko saw the bulk of the action with 8 punts for 370 yds (46.2 avg, 32.6 net).

With a (45-7) lead Loyd would exit early int the 3rd Quarter after playing just 1 series adding 34 yds to his total on the day, giving WSU fan's there first look at Redshirt Freshman Antwan Beaver.. The former 4* QB looked solid in his debut guiding the Cougars to a pair of touchdowns as both Ursua and Wayne haul in scores to extend Washington State's lead to (59-7) as the 3rd Quarter comes to a close.

Fresno State's struggles on both sides of the ball continued in the 4th as WSU extends their lead even further as Viliami Strong connects on 4/5 FG attempts to extend the lead to (71-7).. But WSU wasn't done as the transfer duo of Boulware and Owens continue to run ramped over the Bulldogs Defense amassing 200 yds and 2 more scores as WSU finishes the day with 349 yds and 5 scores on the ground.

nice win in StarkVegas the week before too

as far as the roster goes - offense is stacked once again, defense looks serviceable outside of the linebackers. Should be a bounce back year in Pullman

WEEK 3 RECAP

With Washington's return to the Pac-12/14, this years Apple Cup matchup also becomes the Conference opener for both teams. With Washington/Oregon/BYU/Utah and Boise State joining WSU and Oregon State in the North Division every game becomes a crucial victory in helping the Cougars get back to a Conference title game..

Moore
"The past 4 years the conference title game basically came down to beating Boise State, Stanford and or Cal. The rest of teams in the conference were just not playing at the same level of competition. With the return of original 12 plus BYU (replacing Colorado) and adding BSU and San Diego State, the conference is more balanced top to bottom."
Coming off their 85 point performance against Fresno State, confidence was at a all time high on the Cougar sideline but the Washington Huskies Defense did a solid job of reminding the Cougars the difference in talent looking across them on the opposite sideline. .The Huskies were faster, stronger and more disciplined then the Bulldogs on both sides of the ball and held their own leading (17-14) with under 3 minutes to play in the half.

Calvin Loyd though would lead WSU on a perfect 2 minute drill as he finds C. Wayne on a 14 yd strike to give the Cougars the (21-17) lead going into to the locker room.

Washington opened up the 2nd half with the ball but would settle for a 46 yd FG by SR David Ames to make it (21-20). The Cougars were then bit hard by injuries as both starting RB Clint Powell and backup Marcell Boulware leave the game after a fumble by Bouldware sets up the Huskies for the go ahead score. Leading 26-21, Washington elects to keep the offense on the field and converts the 2pt play to make it a touchdown lead (28-21).

Still (28-21) as we head into the 4th, WSU finally ties the game with 5:48 to play as Loyd finds Oscar Paul on a 37 yd strike over the middle to make it (28-28)..

Washington led by Redshirt Sophomore Anthony Valerio (85) who already had 3 TD's on the day came back out firing but JR CB Chuck Hajrullahu who lead the Cougars with 4 INT last season comes up with a huge play picking off Valerio as WSU takes over with just over 2 minutes to play in the game.

Loyd who also had 3 touchdowns on the day would make it #4 as Loyd finds Wayne for his 2nd score of the game to give WSU the (35-28) lead with 1:30 to play..

Washington still armed with 2 timeouts takes the field as Valerio puts his earlier INT behind him leading the Huskies down the field on a 6 play 80 yd drive ending with a 11 yd pass to RB Sione Cross (86) as the Huskies tie the game up (35-35) with 28 seconds to play. WSU would settle for OT.

Washington would win the toss and elected to play defense first but Loyd wastes little time as he finds his big TE Fetu Urusa for the go ahead score (42-35) but Valerio answers back as he finds his own TE Billy Emery (85) in the endzone as they tie the game (42-42).. Valerio wastes little time guiding the Huskies in for his 6th touchdown of the day to give the Huskies the (48-42) lead but Valerio is unable to convert the 2pt play was WSU takes over with a chance to win.

Loyd also with 5 TD's on the day matches Valerio by throwing #6 as he finds Urusa again open on the crossing route to tie the game (48-48). Now it was the Cougars turn to try and convert the 2pt play and Loyd converts finding 6'5 Johnny Ivory in the corner of the endzone as the Moore improves to 3-2 lifetime against the Huskies.

Yeah after Fresno State gave me a decent game last year I was surprised with how bad of a game they game me this year. It was disappointing. I even kicked 6 FG's

I just posted the Apple Cup and it was a much better game similar to my Week 1 matchup with Miss State.

I feel like my WR room is pretty inexperienced but we have alot of 4* talent that will now get a chance to showcase their skills, so yeah the offense is pretty loaded.. I need to focus on Pass Rush and lockdown CB's but it's hard because non of those type players typically have WSU in their Top-10. I am going to need to get creative with recruiting.. I feel like being now we have a National title on our resumes we can probably open up the recruiting restrictions to include some guy's who are getting overlooked(no scholarship offers).

What's crazy the Offense isn't even the highest scoring in the country.. Clemson currently is averaging over 60 points a game an several other schools are pushing WSU in the 50 PPG range.. Alabama who I play next dropped 70 on a FCS program in Week 1 to pad their stats to 49.0 PPG..

What's even crazier is I kicked 6 FG's in the game (made 5) I don't get it because Fresno played me so good last year and still have the bulk of that roster.
