This season is building up some good storylines between u and the U… top two teams in the conference and the nation, and top two heisman candidates. This is a season for sure

Saturday, October 5, 2029 | Acrisure Stadium (Pittsburgh, PA)

Week 6 Preview: at Pittsburgh (2-3, 0-1)

Synopsis
Going from clashing a few times in integral games such as the ACC Championship game and during the College Football Playoffs to this has been a devastating decline for head coach Pat Narduzzi and the Pittsburgh Panthers, but losing your star, Heisman candidate quarterback to the transfer portal will do that.

After quarterback Ify Cashman opted for greener pastures (and a more potent NIL package, we're sure), the Panthers have stumbled out of the gate to a 2-3 record, suffering an embarrassing loss to Georgia Southern in Week 3, starting a three-game losing streak that have seen them fall out of the Top 25 ranking after falling to Alabama (34-25) and Syracuse (24-20). The Panthers get a chance to right the ship, but will have the tall task of facing the streaking number one team in the country.

The Panthers are currently getting lost in the details, averaging only a 27% conversion rate on third down, leaving them last in the ACC. Conveniently, SMU does not fare much better, with only 40% of their third downs getting over the yellow line. Their offensive and defensive units are both in the middle of the pack in the ACC, with the hopes they can catch an SMU squad that hasn't quite caught fire despite beating great teams by surprise.

The team has shifted to true freshman quarterback Levi Byham as their salvation, and the young quarterback has responded well with 1,259 passing yards and 9 touchdowns through the air to only two interceptions. He adds two scores on the ground. WILL linebacker Matthew York would have had all eyes on him after his amazing start to the season rushing the quarterback, with 8 tackles for loss and 7.5 sacks accumulated in 5 games but he will be out for today's game with a torn labrum. Making up for him being out will be edge rusher Brian Roberts (11 tackles for loss and 3 sacks), who will no doubt leave SMU's offensive line with their hands full

Mustangs execute Panthers, put 60-bomb on Pitt in key ACC victory

‣ True freshman Davon Kamara has gotten a red-hot start to his collegiate career, grabbing the ball and going 82 yards to the crib.

Score

FINAL 1 2 3 4 T
#1 SMU 7 28 14 14 63
Pittsburgh 7 7 0 0 14

Game Summary

The number one team in the nation, SMU, overwhelmed Pittsburgh in a 63-14 battering during their matchup that was billed as a key ACC test but quickly turned into another statement of separation. The Mustangs forced four turnovers, flipping the game before halftime and turning a conference showdown into a rout.

The defining moment came from edge rusher Davon Kamara, who scooped up a loose ball fumbled by Panthers backup quarterback Matthew Ukropina 82 yards for a defensive touchdown, igniting a sideline that never lost energy the rest of the night.

Reigning Heisman winner Alonzo Cheeseman delivered another clinical performance, throwing five touchdowns and adding another one on the ground, carving up Pitt's secondary with precision and tempo control. The offense barely faced resistance, scoring at all and stretching the field both vertically and through the middle.

Tight end Dwayne Kasay continued his march toward another historic season, hauling in three touchdown and repeatedly winning one-on-one matchups to the tune of 135 receiving yards.

SMU improves to 6-0 and 2-0 in ACC play, further cementing its position as the number one team in the country. Next up is a road trip to Blacksburg, VA to face Virginia Tech before the Mustangs head into their bye week.
