"Home-run hitter" HB Shaq Thomas commits to SMU
By Cheryl Smith
DALLAS -- Fresh off another dominant stretch of football, SMU added yet another elite weapon to its future backfield, landing five-star running back Shaq Thomas, the number 17 player in the nation, out of Arlington, Texas.
Thomas stars for Longview High School's 6A powerhouse program, where his explosive running style and breakaway speed have made him one of the most feared backs in Texas. As a junior, he rushed for 1,208 yards on the ground and 12 touchdowns, and early returns in his senior season suggest he could shatter those numbers.
At6-foot-1, 189 pounds, Thomas combines track-level acceleration with an instinctive feel for the end zone - a skillset that made him a priority target for several national programs.
Ultimately, he chose the Mustangs over Alabama and Boise State, even cancelling a scheduled official visit with the Broncos after making his decision.
"SMU's winning culture really stood out to me," Thomas said. "They're competing for championships every year and they play young guys. If you earn it there, you're going to see the field."
Thomas joins a running back room that is rapidly becoming one of the most talent-rich groups in college football.
Last year's recruiting class already brought in five-star Avery Knowles and four-star Dwayne Sowells, the latter of whom has already emerged as SMU's leading rusher this season as a freshman. Adding Thomas gives the Mustangs yet another explosive option in a pipeline that heads coach Nico Augustine and offensive coordinator Kwame Aguyei have increasingly leaned on.
SMU also secured a commitment from four-star center P.J. Wilkins out of Argyle, Texas. Wilkins chose the Mustangs over TCU and Oklahoma State, bringing a different profile to the offensive line class. Known for his lateral quickness, intelligence, and technical footwork, Wilkins thrives in space and projects well in SMU's movement-heavy blocking schemes.
Recruiting analysts see him as the type of lineman who can anchor the middle of the line for years once he develops physically.
The Mustangs did suffer one recruiting setback, however, as four-star cornerback Matt Hawkinson out of McKinney, TX, elected to commit to Oklahoma after considering SMU among his top schools.
