Stanford wins turnover filled game against Michigan as defense closes it out
Stanford's offense kept trying to give the game away. Michigan's offense kept turning down the offer. Stanford's defense finally had enough, closing the door on a would be epic comeback by intercepting Nate Trufan for the fifth time in his heave into the endzone with forty seconds left as Stanford hung on for the 24-22 win on Saturday.

Stanford seemingly won the game with Trufan's third interception of the night, also going to Paul Garrison, to give Stanford the ball with a chance to extend their nine point lead with less than seven minutes to go with the ball on Michigan's 24-yard line. Stanford quarterback Earl Nienhuis would be stripped of the football on the sack, leading to a 73-yard touchdown pass from Trufan to LaMarcus Hendrix on a freak play where two Stanford defenders ran into each other.

The Cardinal would lean on their running game to get the ball to the Michigan 38-yard line with less than three minutes left but Brian Vallos' 55-yard field goal was less than a yard short, giving Michigan another chance with two minutes left.

Trufant would be intercepted by Benjamin Streeter on another freak play where the ball bounced off two defenders before finding Streeter for the diving interception. Stanford would again be unable to close it out, picking up negative yardage and stopping the clock with an injury to give Michigan the ball back with less than a minute to go and no timeouts.

The drive would start positively for the Wolverines with a 25-yard completion to get the ball to the 42-yard line which is ultimately where the game would end after Trufant threw a deep pass into the endzone that was intercepted by Garrison.

For the second straight week, Stanford cornerback Paul Garrison has called game. A week removed from changing the Houston game with a fourth-down pass breakup, Garrison sealed Stanford's win over Michigan with his second interception of the day, intercepting Nate Trufant's heave into the endzone in what could have been a gut-wrenching loss for the Cardinal.

Outside of the long touchdown against Houston, Garrison has been pretty solid for the Cardinal. He's gotten beat a few times on some deep crossers and long speed will be a concern throughout the season but the talkative Bronx corner is competitive, feisty and has shown good ability with the ball in the air.

As the season progresses, Garrison should get better as he is making a big jump from playing in the MAC to playing the best teams in college football week in and week out but so far, he's shown that he has the ball skills and ability to back up the talking that he does which is plenty.

Stanford offense still looking for it's Real-ID
Stanford head coach Bubba Mack said after the game that the Cardinal offense is still looking to find its identity and that right now, they're too inconsistent.

"I think we haven't really found what we're good at and how to be good at that consistently," Mack said of the offensive struggles, "We can do a lot of things really well, in theory, but we have to apply them in practice, in real games, in real situations. We have to figure it out and we will."

Considering that Stanford pretty much brought back the same offense from last year, this was an interesting statement and analysis from Mack. It's sort of felt like Stanford has tried to be a more balanced offense early on in games, using the passing game to open up the running game which hasn't really worked and they end up trying to go back to the running game.

They ended up rushing for over 5.5 yards per carry last game with 214 yards on the ground but it never really felt like that outside of a few drives in the second and third quarter. The passing game has been extremely stagnant, averaging 4.6 yards per attempt against Michigan. By comparison, even with the turnovers, the Wolverines averaged 9.8 yards per pass.

A couple recruits expected to be on campus next week
Four-star cornerback Roderick Whittaker headlines a list of prospects that will be on campus next week in attendance for the Missouri game for their official visits. Whittaker, who is from Southern California, will be joined by linebackers Levi Baum (Santa Ana, Cal.) and Ezekiel Winbush (Anaheim, Cal.) and safety Tony Floyd (Covina, Cal.)

Whittaker is a top-65 recruit in the country and a top fifteen prospect at corner which Stanford is expected to be aggressive at, likely needing to replace potentially three starters if Kentrell Marvin leaves early for the draft as a junior.

Whittaker is near the top of their board and projects to be a highly contested recruiting battle. LSU and UCLA are early contenders as well as Arizona State and Washington. Stanford are the first school to get a visit which isn't always a good thing but at least we know that Stanford is in the fight and being seriously considered by one of the top corners this cycle.

‣ Last year's Heisman runner up is off to another solid start, averaging 373 yards per game with four touchdowns on the year already. Reyna did throw thirteen interceptions last year and we've seen this Stanford defense be opportunistic when it comes to creating turnovers so that'll be an interesting matchup to watch.

‣ We haven't seen this Stanford run defense tested and they'll get one of the country's top running backs in Byham. Fumbles have been a problem with five last year and one this season already but his big play ability could make this game intriguing and be that difference maker for this Missouri offense.

Stanford will surely look to take some sail out of his pass rush with some early running but he has the ability to take over his game with his quick get off and ability to get around the edge with great bend.
