Eagles put nation on upset alert, SMU barely survives

Game Summary

For the first time all season, number 2 SMU looked vulnerable. Not like when they had to settle in against rival TCU, or when they had to bare down and slide past Alabama to start the season.

No, Boston College gave the Mustangs a real scare that they barely survived Saturday night, with SMU holding off a determined Eagles squad 31-24 after they mounted a 14-point fourth quarter surge that nearly produced one of the biggest upsets in recent college football history.

Boston College quarterback Lamar Robbins ignited the comeback attempt with two late touchdown passes, exposing cracks in a defense that largely controlled the game through three quarters.

For SMU, the night started ominously. Alonzo Cheeseman's first pass of the game was nearly returned for a touchdown in the form of an interception, setting the tone for what would be one of the Heisman frontrunner's most uneven performances of his career, let alone this year. Cheeseman finished with two touchdown passes and completing 76% of his passes, struggling at times to find the precision and rhythm that have defined his season.

The Mustangs eventually steadied themselves offensively, leaning on wide receiver Marquis Avant, who delivered his second consecutive 100+ yard performance. Avant consistently moved the chains and helped SMU regain momentum after a sluggish start.

Despite trailing by multiple scores late in the game, Boston College refused to fade. Robbins found success attacking downfield in the fourth quarter, cutting the deficit to a single possession and putting real pressure on the Mustangs in the final minutes.

After the game, head coach Nico Augustine didn't sugarcoat his team's performance. "We looked like a team that thought the game was already won before kickoff," he said. "That's not who we are, and that's not how you stay on top."

Augustine delivered a blunt reminder to his players about the reality of college football. "Any team can get got at any time. I don't care if they're winless or undefeated. If you walk out there thinking you can't be beat, you already have one foot in the grave."

SMU moves to 8-0 on the season, but the performance leaves questions about focus and consistency as the Mustangs continue to chase another playoff run.

BREAKING NEWS: NCAA Launches Major Investigation into SMU Football Program
ESPN Writer

DALLAS -- The college football world was rocked late Tuesday night as the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) confirmed it has opened a sweeping investigation into SMU Mustangs football, targeting multiple current and former members of the program's leadership.

Among those reportedly under investigation are SMU head coach Nico Augustine, current offensive coordinator Kwame Aguyei, current defensive coordinator Griffin McCauley, former SMU offensive coordinator and current San Jose Spartans head coach Tony Sanchez, and former defensive coordinator and current Michigan State Spartans head coach Kerry Abraham, along with several SMU football staff members and athletic department officials.

According to early reports from multiple sources, the investigation centers on several alleged violations spanning the multiple seasons, including the Mustangs' national championship run late season and their dominant defensive performance during their 2028 campaign.

The NCAA inquiry reportedly includes several areas of concern, focusing on academic clustering. Investigators are examining whether SMU steered large numbers of football players into a small group of academic programs to maintain eligibility. Academic clustering itself is not illegal but can become a violation if athletes are pushed into specific courses primarily for eligibility management.

Next comes transfer portal tampering. The investigation will also look into accusations that SMU staff members contacted players currently on other rosters before they formally entered the transfer portal, a violation that became increasingly scrutinized in the modern era of college football movement. This stems from the long-standing rumour of violations from Coach Augustine contacting former all-star wide receiver and current NFLer J.J. Harrell while he was still playing for Arkansas State, bringing him with him when he took the job at SMU. Both Augustine and Harrell have long denied this accusation and nothing had come from it.

Another major component includes SMU's NIL infrastructure, which has grown into one of the most powerful collectives in the country during the Mustangs' rapid rise to national prominence. The NCAA is reportedly examining whether boosters or collectives promised compensation during the recruiting process, which would violate NIL inducement rules. This stems from the allegation of how current quarterback Alonzo Cheeseman ended up with SMU after initially committing to TCU. Again, Cheeseman and Augustine have consistently denied all accusations of wrongdoing.

Perhaps the most explosive allegation centers around the Mustangs' defense during the 2028 season, when SMU shattered conference sack records. Investigators are reportedly reviewing claims that defensive coaches - namely former defensive coordinator Kerry Abraham - incentivized players with internal bonuses for high-impact hits specifically targeting opposing quarterbacks and high-value offensive players, a practice critics have dubbed a "head-hunting ring."

Sources say the NCAA is attempting to determine whether those incentives crossed the line into encouraging dangerous play or targeting, which could constitute a violation of both NCAA safety policies and sportsmanship rules.

The news comes at a particularly sensitive moment for SMU.

The Mustangs are currently 8-0 and ranked number 2 nationally, fresh off a narrow win over Boston College, and are widely viewed as a leading contender for another national championship.

Complicating matters further, SMU is also preparing for its high-profile move to the SEC next season, a transition that had already reshaped the national college football landscape. On the recruiting front, the team is seemingly in the lead for the services of top recruits, including number one recruit, offensive lineman Darrius Bland, and number one quarterback, Alex Keyton.

SMU released a brief statement late Tuesday night:

"SMU Athletics is aware of the NCAA's inquiry and is fully cooperating with all requests for information. The university remains committed to maintaining the highest standards of integrity, compliance, and student-athlete welfare."

Coach Augustine declined to comment following practice, telling reporters only that the program is "focused on football and the players in our locker room." Coach Augustine is expected to be on the sideline for Saturday's game against Memphis, while Coach Aguyei is expected to be in the booth to call plays for the offense. No suspensions or removals have been announced thus far.

NCAA investigations of this scope typically take months - sometimes years - to conclude, meaning the Mustangs' 2030 season will likely continue under a cloud of uncertainty.

Still, with SMU sitting near the top of the national rankings and chasing another championship run, the investigation threatens to become one of the most consequential storylines in college football this season.
