Week 10 Preview: at Memphis (2-5, 0-3)

Synopsis
We're not going to ignore the bombshell that landed in Dallas this week, where the SMU Mustangs were hit with an investigation and several allegations of misconduct across the board. The NCAA is going to do their due diligence and figure things out, but as of right now, there have been no punishments or sanctions levied out against the program or anyone associated with it. Head coach Nico Augustine will be on the sideline and quarterback Alonzo Cheeseman will be under center.

That spells trouble for the last place in the ACC Memphis Tigers, who have the defending champions rolling into town with a chip on their shoulder and a lot of stress to get off their chests. The Mustangs have been turning up the offense as of late, and almost suffered a rare scare against an unexpected push from Boston College last week. Coach Augustine dug into them, and the expectation is that they respond.

The Tigers have to hope that they can catch a giant asleep at the wheel, distracted from the press. But, let's call a spade a spade, this one might get ugly very fast.

Game Summary

The game between the number two team in the nation and the defending champions versus a team that has felt out of their depths ever since joining the ACC was always going to be a blow-out.

No one saw this kind of evisceration coming.

No. 2 SMU - amidst some damning and potentially program-shaking allegations being levied against them by the NCAA - absolutely destroyed last-place Memphis in their Week 10 matchup, 84-7. This is SMU's highest scoring output during the Nico Augustine Era.

It felt inevitable that SMU was going to beat the brakes off Memphis after a 21-point effort in the first quarter after quarterback Alonzo Cheeseman used a quarterback sneak to slip into the end zone and threw for two touchdowns, but Memphis managed to sneak onto the board with a 62-scamper down the field from running back Nathan Fine.

SMU didn't hold back, scoring four touchdowns in the second quarter, refusing to let the Tigers off the mat for even a second. True freshman Kenyon Natson scored an impressive touchdown in the third quarter from backup quarterback Fredrick Cooper and starred in garbage time snaps for the Mustangs. All three SMU quarterbacks - Cheeseman, Cooper, and third-string QB Gideon Akinmoladun - got into action for the team.

Head coach Nico Augustine did not speak to reporters for very long but was certainly fired up when he did. "We know what's looming over our heads, and to call it [expletive] would be an understatement. That's all I'll say about that. I'll let the proper powers that be deal with that, but you know where we stand in that locker room. You can try and take our legs out from underneath us over some [expletive]. This is the result you're going to get."

SMU will be taking on another ACC foe next week against Tulane at home.
