Mariners Looking to Push for Playoffs with Trade Options
Rob Stock – Mariners Blog
With the 2025 season halfway over many teams are starting to position themselves for their goal of the rest of the season. Based on rumors the Seattle Mariners are looking to start a push for the playoffs by acquiring players who are on expiring deals from teams out of contention. The Mariners are looking at bringing in a starting pitcher to replace Bryan Woo, who is on the injured list. They are also looking to bring in a left fielder to replace the struggling Randy Arozarena. A relief pitcher is also on in the cards to boost a bullpen that is the weakest part of the pitching staff.
Starting pitcher Bryan Woo is out for another 1-2 months with a broken hand. Emerson Hancock was called up to replace him but that isn't a long term plan, especially if the Mariners are going to be pushing for the playoffs. Instead they are looking right now at two guys to replace him in the rotation. The first is 33 year old Michael Lorenzen. Lorenzen is 10-6 with a 2.37 ERA this season with the Kansas City Royals (46-51). The other player is 32 year old Erick Fedde for the St. Louis Cardinals (39-58). Fedde is 5-9 with a 2.51 ERA on the season. Both players are sitting at around $7M for their salary this season.
Randy Arozarena had high hopes for his season with Seattle this year but it has come down to being a complete struggle and he is a detriment in the lineup. He has found him benched after hitting .195/.292/.287 on the season with 5 HR and 20 RBIs. Looking to replace him might be 31 year old Jesse Winker from the New York Mets (44-53). Winker is hitting .230 this season with 10 HR and 27 RBIs. Another option is 30 year old Miguel Andujar from the San Diego Padres (41-55). Andujar is hitting .275/.329/.423 with 3 HR and 13 RBI in 44 games this season.
The bullpen has been a weak spot for the Mariners and has let the lead slip too often than desired. The main targets for the Mariners are Colin Holderman of the Pirates (46-51) and Jose Leclerc of the Athletics (41-57). Holderman is on a $1.5M contract and is 5-2 with 6 saves and a 1.85 ERA this season. Leclerc is on a $10M contract and has a 5-3 record with 4 saves and a 2.57 ERA.
Regardless of which option they choose. The Mariners need to start making decisions and loading up for the playoff push. Otherwise they might find themselves on the outside looking in come the end of the season

Mariners Weekly Preview: 7/18-7/20, 2025
Short Week After All-Star Break
After the mid season break the Mariners jump right into the fire by hosting Houston at home. The extra rest could be just what the Mariners need after going 2-4 in the previous week against the Yankees and Tigers. Luis Castillo will see out game 1 against Hunter Brown. Then Bryce Miller will attempt to take on Cristian Javier which should be the premier match up of the series. Finally in the finale Spencer Arrighetti will take on Emerson Hancock in a game that will lean towards Houston's favor based on the pitching match up. The last time the Astros came to Seattle was early in the season and they took 2 out of 3 from the Mariners. The Mariners visited Houston in late May and gave them payback by taking 3 out 4 games. The series sits at 4-3 on the season for the Mariners with the second to last series before a potentially playoff impacting series in Houston in September form the 19th to the 21st.
When will the Mariners Start Moves for the Playoff Push?
Rumors have started swirling about moves the Mariners could make before the trade deadline. These are moves that would be significant if they want to push for the playoffs by strengthening some of their weak spots in the roster. The question remains how long can they wait? With a little under 2 weeks remaining before the trade deadline they need to start making their moves or they might miss out on some of their targets and lose ground in the playoff push.
What is Wrong with Julio Rodriguez?
In his fourth full season in Seattle Julio Rodriguez is starting to show some possible regression in his level of play. This regression has found Julio currently being placed 8th in the batting order, at least temporarily. his average is down 13 points from last year and 24 points from his career high in his rookie season. There is no chance that Julio will move anywhere because he is the big piece in Seattle's long term plans. However, for a team looking to push for the playoffs they need one of their key players to lock in for the second half of the season or the playoff push will get harder.

I mean Julio don’t let us down bro. Looking at those pitching matchups, I’m feeling a 2-1 series for the Ms here
