BREAKING NEWS: Keyton, Tabor opt for greener pastures, shirk SMU
By Cheryl Smith

DALLAS -- The other shoe has finally dropped. And it landed like an anvil, making enough of a seismic blow that the college football landscape has been thrown off course.

The number one quarterback in the nation, Alex Keyton, has officially announced his commitment this afternoon via his personal Instagram account. He will be joining the number one player in the nation, offensive lineman Darrius Bland at Arkansas. This moves come as a shock to most, as most analysts projected Keyton to end up with the top-ranked SMU Mustangs. The team also loses out on MIKE linebacker Keegan Tabor, the number one linebacker in the country, after he also announced his commitment to Texas the same afternoon as Keyton.

Keyton took his official visit to SMU a few weeks ago, taking hype photos with current quarterback and reigning Heisman Trophy winner Alonzo Cheeseman. He had dinner with head coach Nico Augustine and was locked in with offensive coordinator Kwame Aguyei breaking down film and what Keyton would provide to their offense if he were to commit to SMU.

Keyton ultimately would leave Dallas without giving his verbal commitment, but both head coach Augustine and Keyton weren't too worried that the connection had not been made. "They have some amazing stuff there, and I would be honored to be part of their tradition of success," he said to reporters. "I just think it would be a disservice to myself and the process to not go through all my options with the proper due diligence."

"Alex [Keyton] knows how important he is to us and this program's future," said Coach Augustine. "He means the world to us, and he's such a good kid. We hope to have him with us next season."

The first wave dropped after the NCAA announced that SMU was under investigation for possibly ground-breaking violations of their rules and regulations, and though no news of potential wrongdoing has been officially released, the bad press has proven too much for certain recruits. Not that there has been any confirmed correlation between the news and Keyton opting for Arkansas, but its not too difficult to infer.

Coach Augustine, according to sources close to the staff, was irate upon learning about the most recent recruiting news, but not at the quarterback. The chosen recipient of his ire is the university itself.

"He's upset that they are sort of guarding themselves by not coming out with a statement denying any of it," the source told this news outlet. "The program is taking hit after hit, his reputation is going through the ringer, and the university isn't letting them release any kind of formal statement. He's frustrated. It was bad enough to lose [Darrius] Bland, but now you're losing future quarterback? He's not going to take this sitting down for much longer."

SMU hopes to salvage their quarterback class by honing in on five-star recruit Steven Bequette out of Needham, Massachusetts - one of the few top tier quarterbacks left on the board. He is still reportedly a ways' away from making his decision, so SMU might be able to luck out and get his commitment before the College Football Playoffs begin.

Saturday, November 30, 2029 | Gerald J. Ford Stadium (Dallas, TX)

Week 13 Preview: vs Wake Forest (4-7, 2-5)

Synopsis
The last cog on the undefeated regular season machine lies with the Wake Forest Demon Deacons, and boy are they in for one.

It feels like Wake Forest has always been unable to crawl out of the ACC basement, and this year was yet another year on the struggle bus. It almost feels prophetic that they finish their year against arguably the best team in the nation, if not just the conference. The Mustangs have seen their offense take off over the last few weeks, and we would be remiss to ignore the evident chip on their shoulder that as developed over the past month or so.

Expect the backups to show up at some point for the Mustangs, while quarterback Alonzo Cheeseman builds on his Heisman campaign. The Mustangs entire goal is to essentially not mess this up and somehow skew their standing in the ACC Championship Game (presumably against Miami) and the upcoming College Football Playoffs as they look to defend their National title.
