Game Summary

It felt like this matchup was set in stone weeks ago after Pittsburgh and Clemson fell out of the race. SMU vs. Miami. The Mustangs ensured the Hurricanes remembered that the ACC has ran through Dallas since head coach Nico Augustine made his way to the team and it was reinforced tonight after SMU defended their crown with a 40-24 dominant victory over the Hurricanes, taking over the title of de facto best team in the nation heading into the College Football Playoffs.

The two teams fought to a defensive-laden deadlock through the first quarter, both teams missing deep field goals to start the game before SMU running back Cal McCalebb scrambled into the end zone to push the Mustangs into the lead. The team would fly to a 16-0 lead faster than Miami could react thanks to a safety and running back Justice Spielman continue SMU's dominant ground game. Miami would get back in the game thanks to quarterback Braylon Burnette connecting with Willie Levis from four yards out to keep Miami in the game.

The teams would trade field goals to keep the deficit of 9 points before Spielman would run hard from 18 yards out for his second score of the game to push SMU into a comfortable lead they would defend for the rest of the game. Miami cornerback Donald Judd would take a ball SMU quarterback Alonzo Cheeseman would cough up after being ran down, taking it 70 yards to the house to temporarily breathe life into the Hurricanes before SMU's tough defense would continue to strangle the life out of Miami's offense.

"This is arguably the best team we've played all year," said head coach Nico Augustine, claiming his third consecutive ACC championship Trophy and second over Miami (first coming in 2028). "They played us tough and I have no doubt in my mind that we can potentially see them again down the road if we both play our cards right."

SMU, heavily predicted to get a Bye week in the first round of the CFP, will have some time to lick their wounds before playing their next game, losing running back Brian Volson, left tackle David Coco, and right tackle Walter Loudermilk throughout the game to different injuries. Coach Augustine provided no updates on their availability going forward.
