Texas Fires Steve Sarkisian; Eyes SMU’s Nico Augustine as Program Faces Crossroads
ESPN Writer

DALLAS – A seismic shift in the college football landscape unfolded this week as the Texas Longhorns announced the firing of head coach Steve Sarkisian following a disappointing 5–7 season that left the program outside the playoff picture.

The move marks a dramatic fall for Sarkisian, who delivered SEC championships in 2023 and 2027, but struggled to maintain that success in the post-Arch Manning era. Since Manning’s departure to the NFL, Texas has seen its grip on in-state recruiting loosen - with rivals like SMU, TCU, and Texas A&M cutting deeper into pipelines that once belonged to the Longhorns.

Now, Texas is aiming big.

Multiple sources indicate that Texas has identified SMU head coach Nico Augustine as a top target in its search for a high-profile replacement - a coach capable of restoring the Longhorns to national prominence.

Augustine, the architect behind SMU’s meteoric rise, has built one of the most explosive and consistent programs in the country, highlighted by a national championship and multiple College Football Playoff appearances.

But the timing of Texas’ interest is far from coincidental.

Since midseason, SMU has been under intense scrutiny following an NCAA investigation into various aspects of the program.

While no findings have been confirmed, the media storm and uncertainty surrounding the situation have reportedly created internal friction between Augustine and SMU’s leadership.

Sources close to the situation suggest Augustine has grown frustrated with how the university has handled the narrative - particularly as it relates to recruiting.

That frustration may not be unfounded.

There is no indication a deal is imminent. Augustine remains focused on SMU’s playoff run, and Texas is expected to conduct a full search.

But the ingredients are there for something significant - and potentially messy.

If Augustine departs, it would mark the end of one of the most transformative stretches in SMU history.

If he stays, it could signal a recommitment to weathering both external scrutiny and internal expectations.

Either way, as the postseason begins, SMU isn’t just chasing another title.

It may also be fighting to hold onto the coach who built it all.

you go to Texas, I'm at Oklahoma. See who can win a Natty first :curtain:

real talk tho, I was wondering if SMU was going to be the last stop or if you wanted to use this NCAA investigation into something more. Doesn't get much bigger than Texas
